One way to stop backbiting is to imagine the person present in front of you. But the scholars mentioned an even better and more rewardable way to protect your tongue.

Because the problem is, this woman is my mother-in-law and she is already old.
Unfortunately, she is not on the straight path and is a little further away from Islam.

    To avoid backbiting:
    1. Imagine that person sitting there with you. Would u say still say it to hurt them?
    2. Call them with beautiful names and then say what they would like to hear if they were present during the conversation.
    3. Imagining our own self in the position of that person and say what you would say if they were talking about you.

I came here with an honest intention to stop backbiting even though it's so hard because I live in an environment where the only shared activity that we do is talking and telling each other stories and mostly we end up mentioning some people without feeling it...I truly want to top this but I keep going back to it.. Pray for me to find the correct way and to avoid all the things that upset Allah SWT .. May Allah guide us all

I am in exact situation. I have a circle of friends that alhamdulillah we do not do anything haram. We go to gym, we pray and go to Juma together, we go swimming and gather at my apartment to hangout after work. The only haram thing we do is we takk and say story and end up back biting others, and I'm gonna be honest, I think I do that more than other friends. I have recently made a serious repentance and want to stop. The only thing shaitan is whispering on my ear is that: "you gonn be that boring, not funny friend who just gonna say nothing when friends talk. You barely do any haram, so doing only this one is okay/acceptable". I know how big of a sin back biting is, so I am 100% committed to stop. Please make dua for me

    1. Speak at slow pace so that you aware of ur words
    2. Avoid too much talk coz that involves in speaking false
    3. When talking about third person , imagine the person talked about sitting in front of you, and say about that person the words they would love to listen about them
    4. Being straight forward is from shaitan, keep modesty in your talks.
    5. Call third person with their good names that they would to hear before talking anything about them
    6. Imagine self to be that third person, and speak those words that you would like to hear about self- This is the people of Ihsan

what i have come to realise is that the reason it is easier not to sin in ramadan is because we are avoiding idle talk. Keeping ourselves busy in our worship and not allowing our tongues to run free. Let this month allow us to make an oath to use our tongues for only saying good words and to refrain from using it for the things that displease Allah and attains his wrath and anger. Allah saves us from the fire of jahannam and purify us.

Nowadays in order to have friends you have to backbite because that's the culture and if you don't backbite they think you're a goody two shoes and they think you think you're better than them. Being among Muslims who don't backbite is a huge relief, like finally drinking cold water in a desert.

    1. Backbiting is cowardly. Protect your dignity by staying away from backbiting.
    2. Use the tongue to that which is pleasing to Allaah.
    3. Do not be hasty to speak and do not talk a lot so as not to fall into backbiting.
    4. Imaam Al Ghazaali mentioned three ways:
    (i) Imagine the person sitting in front of you when you are talking about him? Will you still do it? If yes, you have no haya as you do what you want.
(ii) Do not say anything about anyone except that the person would love to hear. Call them by their best names and qualities.
(iii) Do not say anything except you imagine yourself being the person talked about.
    5. Slow down. You do not have to comment on everything happening.
    6. Remember that the honour of a Muslim is more sacred than the Kaabah. If there is a pressing need to talk about an issue, do so without playing with the honour of a Muslim. Avoid taking names.

What do u do when you are trying to practice this in your life, but you often are in interaction with people in ur family who easily slip a bit of talking about what others are doing in conversations. These people are of respect, and its not easy to say to them that i dont want to talk about other people. They would find it rude. Although i try not to be talking about others negatively myself but people around me make it hard for me because they want to have a conversation about someone else. Even though i dont entertain that sort of conversation. I just dont make the convo any longer from my side. So what should be done in a situation like this to avoid sin?

      @yasmin8609 Год назад +4

It's hard isn't it sister. Sometimes you might excuse yourself to go to another room. or if they try to include you in the gossip negative talk about someone, you can make it light hearted and chuckle a bit and say "oh not everyone's perfect, anyway doesn't matter about her" and change the topic. That way you're not directly telling someone off or embarrassing them if they're your elders, but you're politely hinting to them and they should stop. Sometimes it works for me. Sometimes if I am saying negative things about my in laws to my mum because they've hurt me, she uses this tactic on me and says oh never mind about them, and she changes the subject. That's my way of knowing my mum is teaching me as her child not to say negative things and try to be positive about people. But she won't tell me off and say what a bad daughter I am as I'm more likely to not listen to that!

@Yasmin i get what you're saying....i do this too. So is this way of handling it enough to not be in sin. Like, as long as im not entertaining the convo. As long as im cutting it short by saying Allah knows best or changing the subject ?

    Brothers, I have a question.
I am a manager and sometimes I have meetings with other managers to discuss our employees/teams performance and behaviour etc. If we discuss someone who has been performing badly or less than expected, and due to this we explore through conversation what their weaknesses and problems are, is this backbiting?
Grateful for advise as I desperately wish to avoid doing harm to others and their honour with my words.
    Jazak Allah Khair

Is it gossiping if many people already know what you have have talked about and even you found out about it from someone else ? And what to do If I don’t talk to the person that I gossiped about to anymore? I feel guilty and very scared that I will never be forgiven.

What about at work, when somebody is not doing their job and causing harm? A supervisor might have to say something they wouldn’t “like” to hear. I don’t understand how it is backbiting when someone is doing something unacceptable.

I'm really worried about this....some times my friends do gossips like that and i don’t backbite but i also can't stop them cause i feel like they'll think i'm too much. I just try to avoid it by saying its ok, let it go or sometimes i don’t say anything. Will i still be sinned? Can someone tell? I always feel guilty Whenever my friends gossips like that. I feel like i should have stopped them but i did't so i ask for forgiveness from Allah

Try talking to Allah about it
Just cry to Allah to take care of it and to take care of that person
To remove that person from your path or ask Allah to not make that person a trial for you
But don’t wish bad for anyone
Just do that and I promise you Allah will take care of them

The wife can remind the husband that it is a sin and may affect the relationship. Worst it can invite legal action. The wife can seek intervention from elders or legal remedies. There should not be any insults, lies in this transaction
