    Open the Quake console and type "timedemo demo1", or "timedemo demo2", or even "timedemo demo3". Then, you can actually measure the performance and the changes due to overclocking.

  • @Storm_.
    @Storm_. 3 года назад +6

    For running Doom on the ct60 I actually recommend trying 'PMDoom' by Patrice Mandin. Reason being that the DSP optimised version you're running is actually limited by the speed of the DSP (which obviously is fine in 030 mode, as the DSP boosts the performance!) But the 060 processor itself out performs the 030/DSP combo, so running a completely CPU bound Doom engine like PMDoom will give you better performance in 060 mode. I hope that makes sense...

    In all seriousness, this is a beautiful machine, an absolute stunner. I can hardly think of any microcomputer that I would rather own. I'm glad you got it all sorted and upgraded. It's heartwarming to see the care you take. You understand the value of what you have, and what a tragedy it would be if it were to be lost or irreparably damaged-as always. Hopefully you are as proud of the work you've done on this as of the machine itself. I look forward to Part 3!

    Like this video a lot and I don’t like Atari. I do to many AMIGA 1200 projects and waiting for the ACA1260. The Atari Falcon is a great computer but to expensive and rare to find. My A1200 with the Blizzard 1260 is to slow to get up with your Atari Falcon 060. You must be lucky to have a real 68060 Rev6 CPU. Had a Atari Falcon but I swap it for a Neo Geo AES. The Neo Geo AES is still great but a Atari Falcon would be great for Demos. Maybe I buy next year a Atari Falcon and upgrade it to a 68060 Rev6 and see your great video again. Saw a lot of videos from you and this is your best. Cheers and have fun with your fantastic Atari Falcon 060.

      Old computers had personality! Each had its own ROM, OS, interpreter and architecture. You had to get to know each machine, something I found very exciting as a kid back in ye olden days. I spent countless hours doing basically nothing useful, but it was _fun._ Beginning with the MS-DOS era, home computers became faceless, generic abstractions, designed for compatibility and modularity. The user experience almost entirely comes from the operating system. In a technical sense that is a superior approach, but it is dreadfully bland. There is no excitement. I do not consider any MS-DOS machine, no matter the age, to be truly "retro".

    For your fan, you may not need it to run full blast.. You can usually connect 12v fans to 5v instead, but some won't start up if you do that, because it's too low voltage..
    Another option is to use the positive 12v connection, but use the 5v connection as ground.. Then you get 7v and those fans will run, and be quiet

    Impressive frame rate increase on Quake there, overclocking is much more dramatic at this retro spec level of hardware, just hot enough to work well lol. Later day Atari and Amiga models were very close to running the DOS games of that time, took a while but they got there "I did it..my way!". :D
    Pretty pin dense monitor out covers lots of better AV options but pretty late for a built-in RF out by 1992, surprised they didn't go external with that by then. Curious, I've heard multiple stories about temperature related quirks in a few Atari hardware platforms.
    Sweet looking demo, bit of a mystery to me the Falcon with it's rarity and all. Look forward to part 3. ;)

    Almost all power connections are centre positive. But not all.. So you always need to check :-)
    Most devices also have reverse polarity protection using diode(s), but again, not all.
    And usually it's the stupid things with centre pin negative that don't have reverse polarity protection, like they are designed to get blown up..

    • @Starchface
      @Starchface 3 года назад

      I am hearing this a lot, but as a kid 30-40 years ago I had many devices and gadgets of all sorts that used centre-negative polarity (perhaps 70%). I used them with universal AC adapters, so I paid close attention to voltage and polarity. In recent years centre-positive has become much more prevalent but it was not always so!

    The different resistance values makes a little bit of sense.. I know when overclocking CPUs in PCs it sometimes needed voltage unlocked chips, and boards and bioses that allowed you to increase the voltages slightly..
    Putting the lower value (22) resistor in will result in a slightly higher voltage than the 33, which may explain that..

    What was that 3M tape you were using to secure the heatsink? If it's just double-sided tape, it's going to do you absolutely no favours when it comes to heat transfer, being a plastic insulator. Ideally you want a thermal pad, or something similar, to conduct the heat to the heatsink.

      @@GadgetUK164 Mostly small fixes - the big point is the build-in nvram setup utility.
      Doesn't play well with supervidel due to some bizarre race condition i'm still fighting against though.

    What an amazing machine with the CT60 up and running! Maybe you mentioned it, but what are the two switches, red and green LEDs connected to the CT60, good for?
    I think you have to do a cut out in the shielding where the new exxos NVRAM is. I had to do a bulge and mine is not socketed. 🤔

      Thanks, I will mention those switches at the end of part 3 =D One is for the HDD, the other LED is power. The two switches, one is the power switch (on and off), the other switch is a reset switch.
