    Two quick notes on the CT60e and Falcon. The expansion ports connectors on the Falcon are two different heights, so when the CT60e is installed it is meant to pitch down very slightly towards the keyboard, but this is made worst by the height of the power connector, along with the back left corner not being supported, so the board can very easily flex, and possibly damage the board. Also, virtually all Pico adapters will touch the RF Shield if installed, so if you use the RF shield, make sure you put some insulation on it so it does not short.

    • @wunderarnebjarne
      @wunderarnebjarne 2 года назад

      Old comment I know, but I have to say that I believe you're wrong about the expansion port connectors. Maybe one of them has been replaced on your Falcon? On both my Falcons and both my friend's Falcons the connectors are of the exact same height, and the CT60 is is perfectly level with the motherboard *unless* you push the power connector fully in - the power connector is about 1mm too low... If you insert the power connector fully you will bend the CT60e PCB.
      You're completely right about the lack of support at the back of the CT60e though, I have 3D-printed a support bracket here.

    Only just started watching the video but have to say that despite never liking the ST one bit. I was too much of a silly Amiga fan boy. When this came out, everything changed. I wanted this! Oh what a beast it was and so under appreciated. I do amateur music production and this was a power house for that. Big bloated apps suddenly behave under that 030. Anyway going to continue watching now, really chuffed for GadgetUK! And massive respect to the donator who has 3DO in their name so I instantly like them for that.

      I'm also an Amiga fan boy, but I have to admit that out of the box, the Falcon was more powerful than the A1200. I did not like the operating system of the Falcon though.
      Also, the Amiga 1200 was easier to expand with more memory and faster CPU.

    I wanted an Amiga when I was a youth, but could only afford the 520ST initially, but really enjoyed it and spent a lot of time doing C coding on it and wrote a few accessories for it. Eventually I moved onto the Mega ST4 and after that I started working in IT and they were deep into Unisys B series Unix boxes and eventually PCs so I never got to buying the Falcon, but I do remember lusting after one. At £2,000 I don't think I'll ever get one, so well done to you!

    The Falcon was the ultimate computer Jack T's and his sons of "the new Atari" home computer division (not to be confused with the original Atari, where many key people worked on the Amiga. Or to be confused with Atari Games who made coin-op games) came out with.
    The idea of the Falcon was......let's try to beat out our arch rival, the Amiga. The computer that was totally revolutionary when first introduced in 1985, but that since this new Atari as they did at Commodore previously, built everything on the cheapest possible quality parts, on a shoe string budget, it took them 7 years to catch up. But they were forgetting something. The year is now 1992. The Amiga & the ST's prime days are long behind them, and both platforms are nearly dead. The PC has ultimately won the war, though it took them a while to really make it in the home market, or for things besides purely business applications.
    So the Falcon's prime motivation was.......with this we can finally beat the Amiga. Ohh boy. It was about bragging rights. The original Amiga team had long left Commodore. "We finally have better graphics & sound". Sure, at a time when, no one cared! Too late! The system didn't last more than 1 year. The Amiga was already basically dead at this time.

    A lot of those small fans have 2 arrows in the plastic moulding around them, to indicate the direction they turn, and which way the airflow blows.
    Also, if you peel up the sticker, in the middle is a small well. Sometimes there's a small plug you need to pop out. You can then put a few drops of sewing machine oil down there, and it will help them go faster and quieter.

    Bridget Hirst, communications manager , US GOLD SOFTWARE on why they were not producing Falcon titles:
    "Show us the market and we will show you the product. Based on the last figure I was told of 7,000 Falcons sold, as Atari haven't marketed it as a games machine, games players may make upto 10% or so, this just doesn't justify producing a game".
    Kevin Bulmer (Legends Of Valour) said Atari hadn't even sent his team a Falcon.

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  Год назад +1

It was interesting to watch you go through the motions with this. OK it is of course completely up to you but my reasoning would be that you've modified the insides to improve the machine. Taking the label off and putting that cool new one on is just improving the outside. I just think it would look slicker inset like the original is rather than raised up like a sticker you've just added on top, which of course is what that would be heh
    Now onto the machine itself. I had NO IDEA you could upgrade the processor and so cool that you can do the floppy drive to SD card thing too. It really is like the Amiga in those ways. Knowing it could have a 060 just blows my mind. The best I ever got on the Amiga was a 040/40 and for a while back there I was king of the world with that. Until I saw a PC running Doom of course and then everything changed lol
    Amazing work, really enjoyed seeing you eagerly working on it. Can't wait to see the machine fully modded and running examples of 3D.
    As for the price being high. I could see a lot of old music guys wanting that same computer setup they had back in the day but with the power to actually chew through music production almost like a modern machine but with all those years of muscle memory with knowing the old software. A lot of them probably still have all the software up in storage or the attic etc. and this is the ferrari of classic computers for music work. I could go on as I'm mad into 3D too but I've already written half a book here. Cheers!

    That thing where it will copy only 255 files sounds very much like a deliberate decision to only use an 8 bit integer variable to count the files to be copied. Like: "Memory is expensive and who would have more than 255 files in a directory, anyway?"

    I had a ST, still have an STE and TT030 but always wanted a falcon to add to my collection. I cant beleive how expensive they have become these days, the last one I watched on ebay a couple years ago went for more than 2000 australian pesos too. This price range is strictly the domain of the hardcore enthusiast these days. My TT i've had since high school and used it for homework etc, I've never really expored if anything more exciting can be done with it. It does have 16mb tt ram and 4mb st ram and a 1gb scsi hdd. On some F030 boards the clock patch is required for CT060 to work... there are many variants of clock patch and some are better, some are worse. You can find a comprehensive info here: mikrosk.github.io/clockpatch/
    Peter Putnik's game conversions work best with his HDD driver, and they require a clean boot. So you have to have a separate boot partition (his driver allows you to switch boot partition) or use a boot manager, like XBoot III.
    Prices of Exxos gadgets, for me are quite high - e.g. his STf 4 Meg RAM expansion is 60GBP + 5GBP for a ribbon cable, I bought a similar expansion in Poland for less than 20GBP. Only thing I bought from Exxos was a bunch of old, partly incomplete, dirty, and yellowed STf keyboards - I knew their condition, the price was very good, and it was a fair deal. I've cleaned them, repaired, retrobrighted, and they all work fine.
    As for the soldering quality, I think he has some health problems (allergy?) and he recently avoids soldering, I also think, he has to avoid any solvents for the reason.

      Yes, that was in retrospect one of the stupidest things I've done on my channel - especially when you roll onto part 3 and I pointed out the ICs are like $1000 each (if you can get Brad to get one out for you...). It came with that cable the wrong way around, I was just re-testing that to check behaviour and prove it, but as you quite rightly pointed out (and I was aware - which makes it all the more stupid) - when IDE is flipped, ground goes to some of the signals... That said, it was a calculated risk, as we've all connected IDE up the wrong way accidentally dozens of times over the years. It can cause failures doing that though, as we saw in the Ravi A4000 board repair I did where the IDE had died for that reason.
