I am a Romanian and I only started learning English when I was 11 but now I very rarely need to translate what I hear or what I speak. English has become my "second nature"... I’m old and was lucky enough to be at the speed chess tournament in 1970 in Herceg Novi when Fischer crushed the field. 17 wins 4 draws and only one loss (to Korchnoi .) There was no increment then just five minutes each for both players. Fischer played like a machine and rarely took longer than five seconds a move and with most moves made with literally after a one second thought. Bang! bang! bang! bang! bang! bang! Tal he crushed 2-0, Smyslov 2-0 Petrosian 2-0 and everyone was amazed at his speed of play. That speed only back-fired once against Korchnoi when he fell inexplicably into a well known opening trap in the Winawer, but that one loss apart, few of his games took more than ONE minute of his time and I remember that fact because my father stop watched Fischer’s thinking time. The longest “long think” was eleven seconds in his loss to Korchnoi. When he took the prize at the end he was smiling and the Russian players were clearly in awe of him. I think he’d have crushed Magnus simply because his speed of 1-2 seconds a move in 5 minute chess I never see from Magnus when Magnus is playing 5 minute games.
