This was perfect. I got my fs40 trimmer from my fathers tools when he unexpectedly died this past year. It still runs great but I had no owners manual so this was perfectly done and right on time !!!! I love RUclips cause you can generally find just about anything on here.
Great video, even 8 years later. Was gifted a FS 38 trimmer and though I crap when I used up the string. I figured it out on my own but later found this video to confirm how to spool the trimmer string. Thanks.
Awesome.......because I had too refill mine today for the first time and it had me twisted.....Thank God for RUclips and people that post there Knowledge for others too pass......
I wish I had watched this video first! :p I wasn't given an instruction manual with my purchase (i picked it up this morning), and I fought the twine for nearly an hour. :D Great video!
This link is old but was my savoir in helping with the ongoing winding of my spool since purchasing it; the manual sucks!!! Thank you, the best explanation, ever!!
Just bought one, have used it, works great. Looking forward to replacing the string now that i have seen this video, this looks very simple, and when it comes to yard work, I like simple.
i inherited this trimmer for free, the idiot who had it loaded wrong had the bump knob torqued so much i need a pipe wrench n vice to get it off. great vid ty brother, helped make sure i didn't mess this head up n have to buy a new one.
Wow. Our man from Bacchus Marsh, no less. Lovely avenue of trees on the way out to Mel ! Me once lived in Sunbury, Vic. Going to visit Melbourne early 2018 from France. Nice video, regards.
I stuff it up every time! Is it poor design? No I’m just an idiot handyman. Off to the STIHL shop tomorrow for another lesson. They are SO GOOD at the STIHL shop!!
Thank you for your helpful information and techniques. It is a bit odd that Stihl must rely on its dealers to educate the consumer. Keep up the great work!
thanks man, this was a few years ago, hope you are still alive and kicking mate----you look young, chances are good you are still among the lucky livers eh heh heh !
I’ll retry. My problem was it ran out quickly and didn’t bump to get more string out. But now I’ll try what I just saw on your video. Wish me luck. So if I bump that bump thing it actually should release more string.
I’ve done exactly what this video said to do about 500 times and it still won’t feed correctly. When I bought my house 5 years ago, I bought a brand new Stihl chain saw, trimmer, edger, and blower. I haven’t had anything but issues with all of them. Does anyone have any recommendations for other brands they might use?
Verminator151029 Lol. Stihl is no longer a premium brand as I found out. I purchased and Echo trimmer and a Husqvarna chain saw since I posted this and they both blow Stihl out of the water in customer service, functionality, and performance. Thank you for being a bully though instead of trying to help me.
If you have a 5L fuel tin it's easy - just add 100ml 2 stroke oil. 2 stroke oil bottles often have a clear window measuring gauge on the side and some have a little reservoir at the top of the bottle (or buy a 100ml measure for the purpose)
My manual says it is an FS38 but the dividers are not on either side of the spool, they are on opposite sides but both the same where it just three holes in a row. I have found three different videos with three different methods of how to attach the line, its driving me mad.
11 years after this video, and you just helped me out big time!!
The best help video I have ever watched. No BS, proper camera work and great instruction. Thank you good sir.
Michael Z Agreed, well done.
My thoughts also, " No BS, proper camera work and great instruction". Thank you good sir.

Thank you so much for this easy to understand tutorial! I found the written instructions hard to understand but you have made this so easy!
Awesome.......because I had too refill mine today for the first time and it had me twisted.....Thank God for RUclips and people that post there Knowledge for others too pass......
I can't believe no one ever explained it like this before! Thanks so much!!
Thank you so much. This was extremely helpful. Following your step by step instructions, I’ve been able to replace the line a few times now.
I wish I had watched this video first! :p I wasn't given an instruction manual with my purchase (i picked it up this morning), and I fought the twine for nearly an hour. :D Great video!
I watch this everytime I refill 😂
I’m here for the second time 😅😂😂
Me too, have it bookmarked.
Me three! What did we do before RUclips?!? 😂
we're glad we could 'stihl' help out.
8 years later this is Stihl helping me out...

I probably commented before, but this is a perfect video. Well done mate!!
This link is old but was my savoir in helping with the ongoing winding of my spool since purchasing it; the manual sucks!!! Thank you, the best explanation, ever!!
Exactly what I needed. This is great general instruction for all spools. Thanks.
Just bought one, have used it, works great. Looking forward to replacing the string now that i have seen this video, this looks very simple, and when it comes to yard work, I like simple.
Thank you very much for posting this video! Been trying to find instructions on that head, and you made changing my line a breeze!
Thank you so damn much this is the first time I’ve changed string without getting mad and putting my fist thru something
Supremely EXCELLENT and detailed tutorial! Thank you!

I just bought an FS 38 trimmer and I was loading the string wrong. Glad I found this video - life is back to normal. Thanks 😂
Same here. No wonder I had trouble lol😂
Milwaukee electric grass trimmer is #1 hands down.
So easy when you know how, that was a great tutorial, many thanks.
Perfect, just what I needed to know.
I noticed you put two ends into spool one one side,You don’t have to load string ends across from one another ?
And i thought i was the only idiot who couldn't replace the line in there Stihl....
Flopstar80 you are the idiot it's their
Man you don’t know how long I stayed away from the trimmer because of the frustration!

thanks mate, very helpful post
Good tutorial, thanks
Great video !!! Way easier to do then what my manual has. It tells you to cut two pieces 3m each and install them as you did. Are you from Australia ?
From Australia mate.
@@davecurry8300 Thought so . Thanks 🇨🇦
Thank you sir !
great video, thank you so much!
i found the video excellent
excellent vid
Tem como colocar lâmina na fs 38?
Can you tell me what the head is called please
Put more like 4 meters of wire 6 is too much
yeah just did mine. I only had 4 metres. It was getting pretty full after putting that on.
My manual says it is an FS38 but the dividers are not on either side of the spool, they are on opposite sides but both the same where it just three holes in a row. I have found three different videos with three different methods of how to attach the line, its driving me mad.
thanks a lot....very helpful
Mine won't auto feed even after following all these instructions..I just bought it from ace hardware..didn't any manual with it
So for an FS 38 the length of the line should be 18 or 20ft total??
6 metres is approximately 18 feet.
Lifesaver! Bless up
Thanks!
very Good thanks
Thank you.
Can you use line thicker than 2mm?
Thanks, just watched futher and saw you explain 2.4mm :)
Thank you!
What if I don't have a auto cut 11 head... But I have an fs 38, still struggling here
You can just bind it with a piece of alluminum
thanks, very clear, unlike manual
Thanks buddy !
