Because when i1 and i2 both are io, the total current should be io+io=2*io. And when either of them is io and other one is 0, total current should be io and not zero.
Diode only provide the path of current If in any case thyristor stop conducting in that condition diode conduct and current store in inductor that current conduct diode conduct . THANK YOU
To be more technical, it provides an alternate path for the inductor of the load to dissipate its stored energy through the resistance. Thus the power factor is improved.
