There is somethin wrong with folks who like horrible movin pictures. Unhealthy. Acceptable folks like movin pictures with impeccable models of roles, who are superior to the malafactors and/or malefactrices. The helplessness factor in horrible movin pictures is not somethin that good folks like. I suspect possession, or occupation by evil spirits.
@@SembuaHumpdediddle Those kinds of movies bear a very high risk of being dishonest, even criminally so. We already live in a society that blames powerless victims for their abuse and wretched circumstance. There's no moral goodness in promoting that particular wickedness any further.
Thank you for not focusing on The Shining like so many of these “deep dive” videos do. Shelley got exactly what she wanted out of her career and was proud of it! Sincerely, Shelley Duvall Archive.
The reviews saying she'd never win a beauty contest after the clip of her looking absolutely stunning during an interview at 53:44 made me feel like I was taking crazy pills.
Literally insane how they talk about her back then, she was absolutely pretty. It's funny because her what I consider, a modern day analog visually speaking would be Emma Stone (petite and slender frame, huge bug eyes) is now considered one of the best actresses of her generation. Born in the wrong generation indeed.
@@ColonelBloodyKurtzI don't get why she was hated. I mean ffs she was picked by the guy who created mash. I guess if he was more respected back then she hopefully would've been too.
@@ColonelBloodyKurtz That's a really interesting example! I was thinking Anya Taylor Joy in terms of otherworldly beauty. But either way, it always rubs me the wrong way when wider society categorizes beauty in terms of "conventions", especially when so many of those conventions have problematic origins. I was 10 years old when the film Popeye was released in 1980, and it was a big deal. I insisted my parents take us to see it because I grew up loving that cartoon, and it featured Mork (Robin Williams). I was mesmerized by Shelley Duval, and I remember asking my mother, "If they could get the real Olive Oyl, why didn't they hire the real Popeye?". Robert Altman's Shelley Duvall's Suzanne is not just an interesting take on the Femme Fatale but also an interesting take on the manic pixie dream girl.
This is why I adore your channel so much, Shelley Duvall was such a refreshing light, a joy, an effervescent figure that couldn't help but bring a smile to your face. It's so rare to find someone so quirky, bright, colorful, and adorable as her and I didn't grow up watching her but I've looked into her works in the past few months and it's purely incredible seeing her on screen. You gave her the respect she deserves as you do with the Hollywood figures you talk about.
I've sung the praises of 3 Women for 40 years, and it still seems relatively unseen outside of people who caught it on late night television or cinemaphiles (I'm certainly the former) so I'm thrilled you focused on it so heavily in this amazing essay. Such a weird, dreamy movie that really sticks in your head. Still one of my favorites after all these years.
I first saw it on pay cable, very early in the morning, sometime in the very early '00s. I'm so grateful for that - Three Women remains probably my favorite film to this day.
I saw it for the first time a couple months ago and I was very pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Maybe even great. I've had a crush on Shelly since the Shining came out. I thought she was breathtakingly beautiful- not a common reaction for a male teenager, as I learned from my friends, but so what? Her character in 3 women was far from what she was known for- vain and unpleasant in many ways. A character I would normally dislike, but Shelly imbued her with a warmth that transcended all those shortcomings. That ending.
Aw, this one is bittersweet. I haven't seen all of Duvall's films, but she's so absolutely charming in everything I've seen her in, so I'm happy to have more to watch. I wish she could have had much more recognition of her talents as a screenwriter and producer in life, and I am amazed at her skill in costuming and set decorating. Learning how much she contributed, especially to the costumes of her roles, makes me respect her even more than I already did. I love costuming and have done some for local theater productions (as well as personal costume projects and designs), and I think it's an aspect of storytelling that people truly undersell; they think it's just there to look pretty or silly or cool, when in actuality it tells SO MUCH of the story and is essential to establishing the setting. I think Duvall had a really good sense of that, and it shines through in the little choices she made for the costumes of her characters.

Thank you for this tribute. My favorite Shelley Duvall moment was in a Twilight Zone 80s episode called "The Saucer of Loneliness". It's a tiny role, but she gave it so much warmth, empathy and realness that it made me cry. I will always remember her for that role more than the other high profile movies she was in. May her soul rest in peace. 🕊️
Another great one! I also really appreciate you challenging Altman here. He is a part of those 70's directors who wielded so much power and their egos were out of control.
I love your videos but Shelley Duvall was my childhood hero and I’m still hurting over her passing. I’ll watch this video when I’m not hurting as much. But I just wanted you to know that I love your work and I deeply appreciate that you made this one. I can tell it’s going to be one of your best.
I first saw Three Women on local TV in the early 80s when I was in middle school. Incredible that they would air Three Women on a Saturday afternoon-different times. The movie blew my mind and Shelley Duvall left an indelible mark on me.
What a tribute to Miss Duvall 👏 👏 Thank you for shining light on of her lesser known roles. Another role that played up her “awkward” physicality for laughs was Berniece in “Berniece Bobs Her Hair”, but I find the subtlety of her acting itself to be the highlight of the film - as it was in many other cases.
Wow she really did have that certain something. What an icon. She would absolutely be an IT girl today. It’s crazy hearing all those reviews talking about her appearance. She was absolutely gorgeous, and not even in an unconventional way?? Like she literally looked like a model. Her career seems like it actually turned out pretty enjoyably for her with Faerie Tale Theater. I’m so glad she got to have a project with that amount of creative control.
Beautiful video as always, so respectful of the icon. I can’t get OVER how no one in the industry saw her potential and great beauty. Great beauty derives from uniqueness and is rare not common. And that’s what she is.
I literally knew nothing about this person expect her role in the Shining. This is one of the reasons I love your videos, I always want to watch so many movies afterwards!
100% if she was born in the 90s later she would be the face of everything ESPECIALLY now. People still love her vibe and appreciate other quirky people as well. It also really confuses me why they described her so negatively, she’s absolutely beautiful, hell even now I found here so pretty in clips I still got nervous lmao. She was so talented as well, shit I bet only a few could name anyone in the films she’s been in but everyone remembers Shelly. I didn’t know there was a popeye movie until earlier this year, I LOVED the popeye cartoons as a kid and when I found out olive was played by Shelly I knew she was in great hands. She deserved so much better and had so much light. She seemed like such a kind person. But at the same time I feet like she DID get some good. Even after generations fans were still hoping for her well being and keeping tabs, she even became deep friends with one fan, they’d hand out all the time, chat and it was beautiful. They were also one of the first notified and helped notify the masses while keeping certain things private. I kept up with her as well. She has one of the best fan bases imo and I hope she felt that love before she passed Won’t ever forget you Shelly, wish you were still here, fly high sis rest in peace

Thank you so much for this thoughtful discussion on Shelley. 3 Women is in my Top 5 favorite films. I consider myself a movie buff and huge fan of 70s cinema and the actresses of that era. Could not have agreed more with the description of Shelley as Raggedy Ann. In 3 Women she shows a dark menacing side that is hard to describe. A fox in sheep’s clothing. The scene when she is coming out of the door into the darkness, gliding up to Pinky (Sissy Spacek), her eyes are glowing and flickering in the dark. You sense a change there and realize the genie isn’t going back in the bottle. Her affinity for yellow, her skirt always stuck in the door of her car…we come to know her as someone who is struggling to keep up appearances. The repeated water themes surround Millie. She works in water at the spa, she lives by a pool where there is always something going on, she has a fish tank on her desk…water plays a subtle role to represent what I think is the fluid way in which the roommates so easily slide into and out of each other’s identities, and the role that fluid plays in carrying a fetus, as the third woman is very obviously pregnant. (I don’t want to put any spoilers in my comment so I’ll leave that storyline alone!). There is so much to unpack that you could watch it 10 times and see something new each time. Really appreciated the thoughts on Karen Black as well. Five Easy Pieces is an absolute masterpiece! I’ll be watching this video more than once as I really love it (and so many of your others, especially your take on Valley of the Dolls)! Thanks again ❤
I feel poorer for not knowing Shelley Duvall's work other than the shining, but so much richer for watching this video! Thank you for sharing other of her amazing movies to check out

Shelley Duvall in the Shining shows her incredible skill as an actress. There's a reason so many people focus on it. It's such a shame that she was treated so poorly on set. It's nice to see her in other works
I think she was talented but I disagree that The Shining displays that. It’s clear she was being deliberately driven mad. Her panic in those scenes is real because a sadist figured that the authenticity of his movie was more important than her humanity.
@jakestroll6518 but being in the moment and reacting to stimuli around you is a valid acting style. How many actors go fully method to get that level of authenticity? I'm not saying I agree with Kubrick's methods, but I also don't understand criticisms against her performance.
@@LittleMissLion Yeah this narrative feels like its playing down Duvalls talent, and is just a victim reacting. She does an amazing acting perforamcne despite a horrible set atmosphere. Thats talent.
I was deeply saddened by her passing, I watched Three Women for a film class in school and fell in love, and this is a wonderful coverage of her work. Thank you for honoring her memory like this ❤
I love Brewster McCloud, it was the first Altman movie I ever watched, completely without any context or warning, with my dad I think about it often, but it is hard to pin point exactly the sheer amount of joy I've found in it, I loved your description of it!
I absolutely adored Shelley. I just rewatched 3 Women, and she's haunting & heartbreaking. She had a truly unique presence and innate talent, just captivating.
I’m glad you covered Shelley Duvall. Many don’t know her earlier movies and how good she was in those rolls. I even learned about movies I had never seen. Thank you.
I remember seeing a screening of Nashville at the Sydney Film Festival in 2013 presented by Robert Altman's son, Michael. He spoke about most of the cast and spoke glowingly of Shelley. RIP to a special actress.
I don't fault the journalists for the way they described her beauty, I totally understand where they're coming from. Shelley Duval has a very unconventional kind of beauty. It's not just that she doesn't match the beauty standards of the time, it's that she is unique looking no matter what standard you hold. When I try listening to songs I've never heard before, some I fall in love with instantly. But some songs, I dismiss initially, only for the unique sound to pop up in my head again a while later prompting me to listen to it again. I don't even appreciate it that much the second time. After four, five, six listens, I'm hooked. I'm now entranced and its one of the greatest things I've ever heard. To me, Shelley Duval's beauty is the same thing.
My late grandmother was friends with Shelley's brother. I acted as a child and I vividly remember the time he told me stories that came directly from his sister.
I had an ecstatic experience watching Brewster McCloud at age 22 during a time of great personal turmoil.. it spoke to me in a way no other film ever has
My favorite Duvall/Altman film is 3 Women. It is like slipping into a dream. Mental illness is what really robbed her full career. Seeing her near the end of her life was heartbreaking.
She and Steve Buscemi are the kind of actors who have such superb talent and a stand out look to them that captures something different. We need more actors like that
Thanks for pointing out the unseen input of women in movies! I've seen the same thing happening in academia and it's so important to give credit where it is due 💌
If I am honest, I actually think that Duvall is seriously underrated in the Shining. Nicholson’s over the top performance sucks up a lot of air. Danny Lloyd got attention because he was so young. But the scene where Jack is cutting down the door is REALLY frightening due to Duvall’s excellent performance. She makes us partners in her terror.

RIP Shelly Duvall. She is one of my favorite actors. Thank you for this tribute to her career.
Foreigner here. Thank you for yet another fascinating introduction to American cinema. I'll definitely watch the Altman-Duvall films.
She has one of the best fan bases imo and I hope she felt that love before she passed
Won’t ever forget you Shelly, wish you were still here, fly high sis rest in peace
Does anyone else’s heart and soul quiver whenever a new Be Kind Rewind video drops?
Thank you for this, I had no idea Shelley Duvall was so prolific. I now have a host of new classics to watch. 😊
I’m struck by the intelligent, empathetic, and thorough analysis. This channel is my new favorite thing.
That's the Be kind rewind video I didn't even dare to hope for. Shelley forever! 🤩
You and Broey made companion pieces for each other’s videos and released it at the same time 🥺
Classy 😊🙌🏽
What a coincidence
Just one of the best film channels on YT.
Rest in Peace Shelley Duvall. I have only seen Popeye, but I love your videos and you've turned me in her direction.
Thank you.
@bkrewind Your channel is the definitive place for deep dives into classic Hollywood. I'm so happy you're covering Shelley Duvall-this just made my weekend!
She was mystical, cute as a button. Shelley deserved more out of her career, very sad to still see that she’s no longer here 💔
I grew up watching her Bedtime Stories series...I always felt like she had a very special loving heart, especially for children. May she rest in peace!
I'm astonished at the timing of this video given I've JUST finished watching Nashville for the first time.
“I got good reviews! Me and the baby.” 😂❤️
What a treat on a Saturday morning
BKR giving long overdue flowers is my favorite thing on the internet. Such a moving tribute to Shelly and her work emphasis work not just her physicality
Shelley Duvall and I shared a birthday, and I’d always felt a deep connection to and affection for her. I’ve always sent her a good wish on our birthday at some point, and will continue to 💛
Fairie Tale Theatere was my jam as a kid. A beautiful tribute to a highly underrated talent.
Thanks again ❤
i appreciate your perspective so much, BKR. thank you for this great video on Shelley, and for all you do!💙
I feel poorer for not knowing Shelley Duvall's work other than the shining, but so much richer for watching this video! Thank you for sharing other of her amazing movies to check out
Shelly was the first "manic pixie dream girl." Especially in Brewster McCloud
Thank you for your thoughtful and well researched and written videos. You've captured Duvall's character respectfully.
Your video essays are always such a beautiful, exciting, fascinating treat! Thank you for this one and all the others!
We lost some cinematic heavyweights this year. 😢
Thank you for this.
I figured you might do a Shelley Duvall tribute after she passed away last month, and as usual, you did not disappoint.
All your videos are amazing but your recent videos literally have me hooked and I have rewatched them over and over. ❤
I am truly amazed by the incredible job you did in sharing Ms. Duvall's story. Your storytelling had me captivated, highlighting her remarkable achievements throughout her career. Thank you for crafting such a heartfelt tribute to this underrated and talented actress. I hope that this storytelling reaches a wide audience of film lovers. Congratulations on another masterpiece from Be Kind and Rewind.
I live for BKR videos!!!!
This was a glorious exploration of Duvall and Altman’s collaborations. Thank you for addressing the context of timing and the further reaching effects they had on one another.
I argue on your channel a lot but you really do great work.
No way!!! I can’t wait until I watch this video. I love The Shining and Brewster McCloud so I know I’ll love this. Thank you Be Kind Rewind.
This was so well written, thank you for delving into this. I loved Shelley growing up, was incredibly invested in Fairytale Theater and obsessed with Mother Goose Rockin' Rhyme.
Thank you for sharing this!
@@LittleMissLionit was still horrendously cruel
@@LittleMissLion Yeah this narrative feels like its playing down Duvalls talent, and is just a victim reacting. She does an amazing acting perforamcne despite a horrible set atmosphere. Thats talent.
@@icravedeath.1200 I did allude to that in my comment.
This was wonderful! Thank you so much for this loving portrait of Shelley Duvall.
I was deeply saddened by her passing, I watched Three Women for a film class in school and fell in love, and this is a wonderful coverage of her work. Thank you for honoring her memory like this ❤
I love Brewster McCloud, it was the first Altman movie I ever watched, completely without any context or warning, with my dad
I think about it often, but it is hard to pin point exactly the sheer amount of joy I've found in it, I loved your description of it!
I absolutely adored Shelley. I just rewatched 3 Women, and she's haunting & heartbreaking. She had a truly unique presence and innate talent, just captivating.
3 Women is one of the eeriest movies I’ve ever seen. It got under my skin and I felt creeped out for days after.
I’m glad you covered Shelley Duvall. Many don’t know her earlier movies and how good she was in those rolls. I even learned about movies I had never seen. Thank you.
So many tears, thank you for covering her lesser known roles! Respectful, as always ❤️
Hello *dramatic pause while walking*, thanks for everything Shelley Duvall. ❤
Fairy Tale Theater was the GOAT for my sister and I. Thanks for this deep-dive on this true American original.
Shelley was part of my childhood, her aura is so sweet, she just seems kind and that’s what made me like her so much … RIP
Thank you! This was so lovingly made! It is a great tribute.
I had an ecstatic experience watching Brewster McCloud at age 22 during a time of great personal turmoil.. it spoke to me in a way no other film ever has
What a wonderful video this is, and your research, presentation, and commentary is all top notch.
The amount of Altman movies she carried is crazy
Thank you so much for this one. Absolutely loved her.
My favorite Duvall/Altman film is 3 Women. It is like slipping into a dream. Mental illness is what really robbed her full career. Seeing her near the end of her life was heartbreaking.
Fabulous video, Shelly's performance in 3 Women is like no other. Can't wait to give Thieves Like Us a try.
There’s a reason that I look forward to the 1st day of every month. Thanks for your monthly surprises!
Learned so much. I know very little about Shelley Duvall and now want to watch the Altman stuff. Thank you!
Your work is always extraordinary. Thank you!
She and Steve Buscemi are the kind of actors who have such superb talent and a stand out look to them that captures something different. We need more actors like that
A fantastic tribute - intelligent, brilliantly researched and a very balanced assessment of her career. Bravo!
3 Women will always hypnotize and haunt me - and a huge part of that is Shelley Duvall's incredible performance.
Thanks for pointing out the unseen input of women in movies! I've seen the same thing happening in academia and it's so important to give credit where it is due 💌
I knew you would do a vid about Shelley Duvall! And as always you never disappoint!
3 Women is how I found her waaaay back when- it's still one of my favorite movies to this day.
Great job, BKR. Altman is my favorite director, and a smart video on their collaborations is what the world needs.
Nightmare Classics (also known as Shelley Duvall's Nightmare Classics) is an American horror anthology television series created, produced and executive produced by Shelley Duvall featuring adaptations of well-known horror stories by authors including
Very happy to see a new video drop and even better with the story of one of Hollywood’s under appreciated stars
Great video! If I never see or hear of The Shining again, it’ll be too soon.
What a great tribute to the underappreciated Ms. Duvall! I always loved her and this puts to words a lot I things I was feeling and a lot of stuff I didn't know about her. Thanks!!!
