    got Basil rear & front basket, both are very well made. Rear has a MIK quick release carrier so I can take the entire basket in-store when shopping.

      Oh nice! Is the front you have the Portland too?

  • @Herbybandit
    @Herbybandit 2 года назад +10

    Please don't rely on the quick release, it's not designed to carry weight and if it were to fail you will lose the front wheel, adapt it to fit the M5 bolts or better still convert the front hub to a nutted axle, it's a simple job for a guy of your calibre, you can convert nutted axles to quick release so it's only a matter of doing the opposite.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  2 года назад +6

      I know 😅 I’ve done videos on that conversion before. I did mention in the video about it not being suited for QR. I’ll find a better way of mounting it.

      Quick release skewers are solid pieces of steel, you probably wont be carrying anything more than 10 lbs, 5lbs on each side. No problem.

    Very nice ride and a cool and useful product. I have a similar styled rear basket by Basil and their stuff is absolutely bullet proof.

    Very smart. Perhaps Torvi would like a short ride in it.

    Cheers, just bought to put on a fixie.... All info good as I found the same with my present front rack carrier on a 93 specialized rock hopper.

    Qr spindles will be fine. There’s no way a 10kg load distributed over the two ends of a qr spindle will be problematic

    I always find racks that mount to the axle a right nuisance if you get a puncture, so sandwhiched the stays between penny washers and used the m5 mounting point on my forks instead

    Anti-theft skewers would be a better solution than mounting with M5 bolts to the eyelets. Stronger I would expect being an M6 bolt. Easier than converting the hub to solid axle.

    i have a different basil front rack and what i did to adapt the bolt holes is i forced thick 5mm washers into the axle holes
    holding up so far

    Bracket/skewer problem: Hey, I would make a custom mount from some stainless flat, pick-up both m5's on the fork and a cutout for the Q/R, pick-up the rack leg onto the bracket wherever is convenient. HTH

    I’m looking for a frame like the one in the video in a 54.
    How were those bikes called back then? I’m having a hard time finding one.
    If someone knows about any hit me up, I’m located in the netherlands but wouldn’t mind paying shipment !

    Hey nice rack! Ordinarily I think routing the cables through the rack for a cleaner look will unfortunately infringe upon the available space inside the basket. Ideally this rack will probably work best with an SS or fixed gear sans cables for an even cleaner look.

    Way to high and way to far forward. I am seventy six and believe me I have a lot of experience in this matter. All I have to do is look at it and You never want to put any more than ten lbs. on that thing. For me it would destroy the handeling of the bike with nothing on it.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  2 года назад +3

      Age fortunately, doesn't equal experience.
      The rack is light so unloaded, you don't really feel anything. However loaded... as I said in the video... the steering is heavy. It's nothing a expierienced cyclist can't handle though. :)
