- AEW has only existed since 2019, making it only 4 years old but my word what an eventful 4 years it has been. Many moments, many matches. And while there of course have been many bangers in AEW there of course also exists, their fair share of stinkers. And today we’re gonna discuss a few of them with these being my personal picks for some of the WORST matches in AEW history, all for a variety of reasons.

Matt Hardy vs Sammy Guevara at All Out 2020 was so hard to watch because of Hardy’s concussion and him not being all the way there.
That whole feud was cursed

I knew this match would be talked about. Thankfully Matt is okay afterwards. It could have been a LOT worse.

honestly, I'd throw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre deathmatch on here, one of the only times I've watched AEW and audibly said "this is one of the worst things I've ever seen"

Ngl that was one of the most fun matches I’ve watched since before it even started I went in expecting the worst. For me it’s a so bad it’s good match and it’s one of my favorite so bad it’s good matches.

Honorable mention (or unhonorable mention): Thunder Rosa vs Ivelisse was really hard to watch with both of them were sandbagging each other and clearly have zero chemistry and zero ring phycology
Ivelisse started the shit between them and was also a being a b i t c h to people backstage. That along with the fact that she associates with Chasyn Rance of the infamous Team Vision Dojo in Orlando is why I’m glad AEW fired her!

That Sammy vs Matt Hardy match shows how incompetent AEW is when it comes to their refs. They're actively told who is supposed to win. They're not supposed to be told this. In every other legitimate promotion, refs are taught to treat every match as a "shoot". They're only supposed to be told WHEN to go to the finish. That match should've been immediately ended when Matt was KTFO's on the concrete. In any other legitimate promotion, it would've been. Never forget, former WWE ref, Mike Chioda, quit AEW after just 3 matches and put Tony on blast for not knowing what the fuck he's doing, and telling the refs to ignore everything but who is supposed to win. There isn't a single referee in that company who once they're gone from AEW will be hireable anywhere else because of how they pissed away all of their credibility.
Thanks for this. I didn't know refs weren't supposed to know who wins. I always thought they knew, but wondered why some "kick outs" are clunky in AEW. I remember the Lance Archer vs Kingston match where Lance was obviously knocked out but ref still counted 2.

Like Britt was much better lol? She’s gotten better…but tbh her in ring style works better with NXT now than AEW in my opinion.
So I agree that Matt Hardy Vs Sammy Guevara was the worst match of AEW. At the beginning it was good the football setup was cool but After Hardy's head got bounced on the floor they should stop it he could get much worse like blood damage or brain damage if it was hit wrong and they need to put the X immediately not wait towards the end and the end wasn't needed at all so yeah I seen worse matches in 2020 but this one is probably the stupidest and dumbest match that AEW writers wrote, and the announcer knew that it happened they should had help not just asking questions they already know.
How an AEW fanatics would defend these matches:
Luchasaurus vs Cezar Bononi - They would most likely talk about the commentary more.
Broken Rules Match - They would most likely praise Matt for continuing the match despite the injury he sustained.
Britt, Reba, and Ford vs Swole - They would likely talk about the moves that were used.

From my understanding about the Matt and Sami match is when they showed Sami going to ring they talked to Matt and he said he wanted to finish but i agree they shouldn't of allowed it to continue
In Big Swole’s defence they literally only gave the, like 3 mins including entrances to build what was supposed to be the big match that let her punch her ticket to All Out, with 5 people involved in the match (if you include Kip). They set her up to fail.
I know Tony Khan gets heat for his tweets saying she sucks but its true!, Big Swole was terrible and had some of the most botched matches either on on TV, Dark or PPV
There's a reason after her release WWE, Impact or NWA show zero interest in her...shes that bad in the ring

I think there was a stipulation that if Matt Hardy lost he would of had to leave AEW That's why it continued even with the concussion from Matt suffered Still should of been called off But Hardy luckily was okay afterwards

Aew dark wasn’t always boring. Ben Carter was a big highlight and his match with Lee Johnson is a match you should give a chance. Also the rivalry between cutler and Peter Avalon was so goofy it was good
One of the few times I've agreed with TK on anything is when he said (I'm paraphrasing) that Swole wasn't a good wrestler. I wouldn't have said it publicly like he did because I'm not a socially awkward cocaine addict and saying it publicly was a bad look for him and the company, but she's awful. I'm not going to pretend that her opponents in this match and the arguably worse Tooth and Nail match were much better, but Shida (still their best female worker, IMO) got a good match out of Ford, yet she couldn't do anything with Swole. Swole is exceptionally bad at what she does, both in ring and on promos.

Watching Dark became too boring for me in that era and I stopped watching it. You had like 2 real matches and 15 squashes per episode.
I liked it when it was only 45 minutes and had actual matches

I understand that Dark during the pandemic became a place for indy wrestlers to get some bookings and later for local wrestlers to present themselves. But it really watered down the quality of the product. And you could feel the crowd getting burned out after sitting through 5-6 hours of taping numerous shows and the live broadcast of Dynamite.

Aew summed up. 95% of the matches are garbage. 5% are the best matches you’ve ever seen. Wwe is more like 15% are bad, 75% are mid, 10% are really good. Aew wrestlers have the freedom to be incredible and terrible while wwe matches are typically just boring rehashes of previous matches while a few are pretty damn fun
Pretty confident at least one match on every single show they’ve ever had could make this list.

They do loads of mis timing botches, and moves that obvisly dont conect. You even have finishers that clearly mis yet they stil do the 3 count. Tony bizy trying to call it pro wrestling and not entertainment. It should be called a acrobatic comedy show.

Not really. They put on at least one or two match of the year contenders every ppv. Even on free television they put on bangers like Danielson vs Omega, FTR vs Bullet Club Gold, Page Vs Archer, etc.
