"How To Kill Your F1 Career" is a bit of an odd title for a video about a driver that drove 10 seasons in F1, with 7 full seasons after the point the video identified as the alleged start of the downward spirale. The only thing that got killed after 2013 was the odd hypetrain that took off due to results in a car that any other midfielder in F1 would have driven to similar results.

    • @Robert-pl1gd

Agreed. If you drive 10 seasons in F1 then you just werent good enough but not kill your career. Nikita Mazaspin, Crashtor Maldonado, and Spintaly Petrov killed their career.

The fact that he survived the Bahrain crash is the result of decades of safety improvements in F1. I recently watched a series on F1's most horrific crashes, and one of the crashes (Helmuth Koinigg) has an eerie similarity with Grosjean's crash. Helmuth, however, was not as lucky as Romain. But in the 46 years between the two crashes, we have better fire resistant racing suits, the monocoque, the HANS device, the Halo, etc., all helping to improve the chances of survival in a crash. That crash could have ended so much worse. 😯

Back then I remember that they were quite fed up with Romain because he was already considered as a weapon on track. FIA stated the reasons of the race ban with this justification:
"The stewards regard this incident as an extremely serious breach of the regulations, which had the potential to cause injury to others. It eliminated leading championship contenders from the race. The stewards note [that] the team conceded the action was an extremely serious mistake and an error of judgement. Neither the team nor the driver made any submission in mitigation of penalty."
About the mentioned drivers, Maldonado received a 4 race ban indeed for a crash in Monaco in 2005 when he was competing in Formula Renault 3.5, because he did not slowed down coming to the scene of an accident at Mirabeau. Sargeant and Latifi did mistakes for sure, but without causing dangerous accidents.

Romain was talented, but there's something missing from his makeup that kept him from being a great driver. In close, he wasn't conservative enough, and had many bad race beginnings. The pressure might've been part of it, to push the limits of the car, but he let things happen on track someone more defensive or instinctively not let happen. I wish his career went differently, but he'll always be an icon in F1 history.

Out of all these drivers only Grosjean was really considered crash prone, but he was also considered very very fast. Haas came to sport as a team with very low expectations and they couldn't really get any driver, Grosjean willingly went there as he saw potential to get a promotion to Ferrari through them. Maldonado never saw any potential to move to Ferrari and he was comfortable in Lotus, until they terminated his contract late that season, by that time Haas already loaned Gutierrez from Ferrari. After first season they weren't looking for any pay driver, so they signed Magnussen, who was way faster and better. And the year they signed Mazepin, Maldonado was long gone out of the picture.

I still wonder what Grosjean will do in his prime with a bit better car(because as Lotus 2012-13 was fast, he's not that fast as Red Bull or FerrarI) but after all Grosjean achieve much more than 90% f1 drivers.
