    A couple of things:
    1. Only Hoothoot is known to make noises occasionally. Noctowl's dex entries more accentuate their eyesight and some entries describe them as silent flyers.
    2. I feel that using Pokemon that are known for just dancing or cheerleading is a bit of a reach (but that's just my opinion).
    3. I feel that Pyroar should've gotten the Sound type so it can be a Fire type that can threaten Water and Ground type Pokemon.
Besides that, I hope Lotad feels better soon.

You could actually make ice resistant to sound, with the justification of snow, which is filled with air that dampens sound. This is why snowy days are so quiet. The snow weather effect could even lower sound type moves power similar to rain lowering fire moves power

Personally i think that Toxtricity makes sense to have the Electric/Poison type, seeing as they have both a poison and electricity sac that act as guitar strings. But if you want to keep them related to the Sound type, you could buff Punk Rock to boost Sound moves by 1.5x like Steelworker, Rocky Payload, Transistor and Dragons Maw, while removing the effect of taking less damage from Sound moves to give it a psuedo-Sound typing instead of sacrificing their base typing. Yeah Electric/Poison isnt the best typing in the game but it certainly makes them feel a lot more unique compared to other Electric and Poison types while being an honorary Sound type.

i think giving fire another supereffective matchup would be kinda bad for balance
fire right now hits ice, grass, bug, steel and resists all those types AND fairy and fire itself

I mean...Sound does have it's own category of moves, so I'm not sure how to feel about the sound type. I wouldn't mind it too much, but I'm just not as hard core of a fan. Light type and Cosmic type are where they're at for me. Interesting video, either way. I hope you can cover more fan types in the future!

the main reason I chose sound is because light and cosmic are very common basises for fairy and psychic moves, and tbh it's a bit harder to build thematic reasons for them.

I really think GameFreak would have added the Sound type already if they thought it was a good fit for the games. I feel like it would be weird for the type to be added, when there are already a lot of dual-type Pokémon that could qualify for a potential Sound type, but which would be losing one of their unique types to do so. Even with the addition of the Fairy type in Gen 6, they only ever added the Fairy type to single-type mons or by replacing the Normal type with the new Fairy type. And there are a wide range of sound-based moves that seem to really fit the type they have already, rather than having their type switched to Sound. I think there are too many issues like this that would get in the way of Sound type being added specifically. But a different new type really does make sense in so many ways; I just think it would be some other type before they added Sound.

  • @nekoloons4844

For Flygon, I think dragon sound would make more sense and I think Palafin being able to use boomburst doesn't make it a sound type since lots of Pokemon have coverage moves. Plus I always thought palafin's boomburst was more of a release of energy from it hitting something.
Otherwise I love the idea, this videos great.

  • @JJSSBU
    @JJSSBU Год назад +6

    My explanation for type matchups:
    Supereffective against:
Noise counts as noise polution, which harms envoriments that Fairies so desperately rely on.
Soundwaves travel quite well on both Water and Solids like Steel.
    Not very effective against:
Bugs are thought to be deaf so they should be inmune to Sound.
Snow is able to make a house soundproof, thus making it resist it.
I guess you could argue Poison doesn't have feelings, so it doesn't hear, idk

Honestly, I would take it even further with bug types. I would have it so they are *immune* to sound type attacks.
Many bugs just aren’t affected by sound at all so this is actually rather thematic. Being able to completely ignore a type would offer them much more defensive ability.

The main problem with a "Sound type" is that it would be way more disruptive than every single other new type introduced in the series as of now, which is a giant issue.
First, there's the matter of how turning all sound-based Normal type moves into Sound type would almost completely wipe out the current special movepool the type has.
Want to run Drampa or any Normal type special attacker? Too bad! No decent STAB options for you! It's either Tri Attack, Hyper Beam or... Razor Wind? Eh..?
The second main problem with the inclusion of a Sound type is the nightmare that the retypings would cause in their retroactive implementation, as many plot relevant trainers are type themed.
We already have this issue with Whitney and her Clefairy, a former Normal type that was retyped as Fairy in Gen VI. In this specific case, at least, the developers can just kick it out of her team and replace it with a Jiggypuff or something, which obviously would be way more difficult to do in the case of the many Normal type mons that would get retconed into Sound.
The third problem is the fact that sound is already a move subcategory that can e assigned to any type, so making it into a whole new type would require a major revamp of the current battle mechanics. Also, giving all Sound type moves the trait of going through substitute could be possible a whole new balancing nightmare for the developers to account for.

    • @jmcbango

I like the idea, especially the type matchups and your justifications, but a lot of the mons changed to sound types were massive stretch. • @avibi
    @avibi Год назад

My feelings towards there being a Sound type or your version of it aside, you have to be extremely careful when balancing types not to add too many new weaknesses into the game, since those are always targetable by the attacking Pokémon and as such serve to undermine the resistances or relationships of neutral effectiveness that type may have. As a case in point, I myself struggle with this when working on my revamped type chart which looks something like this (tentative and subject to change):
    • Rock no longer resists Poison
    • Rock resists Bug
    • Rock resists Ice
    • Ice resists Water
    • Ice resists Flying
    • Flying super effective against Water
    • Steel super effective against Flying
    • Water super effective against Steel
    • Water no longer resists Steel
    • Steel no longer super effective against Fairy
    • Fairy no longer resists Bug
    • Ghost no longer resists Bug
    • Psychic no longer super effective against Poison
    • Psychic resists Poison
    • Fire super effective against Poison
    • Fire no longer resists Fairy
    • Psychic super effective against Fairy
    • Grass resists Fairy
I also considered but ultimately discarded (for one reason or another) these other new type relationships:
    • Bug super effective against Fairy
    • Poison super effective against Bug
    • Poison super effective against Water
    • Psychic resists Fairy
    • Grass no longer resists itself
Never forget that the relationships between types making sense and being consistent are more important than types being wholly balanced. For example, even if I helped Ice types out defensively with these changes, it's still a bottom 3 defensive type in keeping with the intuitive nature of the type and the asymmetrical balance of the game. Something else to look out for is typings having their resistances or super effective match-ups entirely encompassed by others (see Poison having Grass as its only super effective match-up pre Gen 6, or Bug and Flying sharing most of their resistances), which isn't the best idea either.

I've really never been a fan of "Sound" types as a whole. It just feels a little _too_ Normal to justify being its own type, particularly since every Pokemon, aside from maybe those with the aptly named "Soundproof" can make sounds to some extent. Normal just works a lot better for...most of them --- Noctowl still feels more Psychic/Flying to me.
I do still think the types themselves could use some major reworking to hone what we _have,_ rather than adding an entire new type to balance.
    As for my own ideas...
Ice: Make it resistant to Flying (Birds not being able to fly or thrive as well in cold temperatures), and offensively neutral to Steel (Steel is a poor conductor of heat, and I'm not entirely sure why it was resistant to begin with. Plus it offers an additional counter to the long-time tank Skarmory, and now Corviknight
Poison: Supereffective against Bug types just as they were back in Gen One (Pesticides basically. I know some bugs resist pesticides, but bug-spray still exists for a reason). In addition, the regular poisoned status effect now works similar to Frostbite from Legends Arceus, in that it's a special-attacking version of Burn. The reasoning being that a sickness will hinder one's ability to think clearly.
Bug: These guys definitely deserve the most buffs, so...Resistant to Fairy, and Supereffective against them in turn. (Really should've been this way from the beginning. Fae magic I doubt would work as well against the more simple minds of insects, and spider webs or praying mantises would only see small winged pixies as fleshier, tastier prey.) Weak to Poison now as I said before, but offensively are now neutral to Ghost-types. (I imagine the reasoning for this in canon was that a bug's venom is of no concern to a ghost, but not every bug is poisonous and they have all reason to be neutral) In addition, Bug-Types are now completely immune to confusion, due to (I believe) a lack of an inner ear, which is the organ that tells the brain where in space they are, and as such, dizziness wouldn't hinder them at all. I'd consider making them neutral to Steel, but I don't have any real justification for that.
Psychic: Immune to being put to sleep by any source aside from Rest, or a Mycelium Might user, with any Insomnia Pokemon getting a different ability to replace it. This is due to the belief that more intelligent people are more resistant to being hypnotized, and mind over matter and all that. It's been a long time since their Gen One dominance, and with a Bug-Type buff, I figured they deserved _something._
Grass: Heal more from all sources during harsh-sunlight. This includes from draining moves, healing moves, and even Leftovers. Grass-types are centered on their ability to tank, and while types don't really help that too much, they _do_ some have key resistances to stuff like Water, Ground, and Electric.
Fairy: All the changes I made before, _but_ with a couple extra buffs not to hit them _too_ hard with the Bug and Poison buffs. Fire-types no longer resist Fairy-types, (Old reasoning being...okay, I don't actually know the reason. Fire destroys the plants that many fairies draw power and shelter from? I'll touch on that more in a moment.) And Fairies are now resistant to Ghost. (I don't really have any _good_ reasoning for this besides game-balance since Ghosts are probably the most busted type in the game at the moment? Could reference magical charms and magatama that shield its wearers from malevolent spirits.) They are however, now resisted by Grass. (Like I said before on them drawing power from plants. They'd naturally be more hesitant to damage the flora and fauna)

There are a few problems here.
Mostly, I don't think we're thinking through the repercussions of taking Boomburst from a move with zero super effective targets and an immunity to a move who's best answer is Vespiquen or Electrode. (Zapdos and Moltres are also good, but will be OU. Won't somebody think of the low tiers.) Boomburst is role defining as is, if it's super effective against every good defensive type, it's gotta go.
Two, minor flavor issue. No way grass whistle isn't blocked by soundproof. Most of the others I get, but that one is literally just playing a pretty song on a piece of grass. Maybe some moves should get an "affected by sound abilities" clause.
Toxtricity gets Punk Rock, so realistically that would just become a steelworker clone, or something. If you have to change their types though, Overdrive should match their main type instead of becoming sound, because they get Boomburst four levels later anyway. It should probably still activate Punk Rock, too, that's the entire reason the move exists. (they get discharge eight levels earlier.)
Minor flavor issue the second! Actually quite major... uh, the entire basis for the type chart flavor is flawed. Sound traveling in air can't be transferred to denser material very easily. Metals in particular are notable for reflecting practically all sound.
It would be fine to make choices more on balance than flavor, but this is NOT balanced. Sound/Rock and Sound/Dragon get unresisted coverage, and several other types are only held back by the likes of Dark/Bug. (tank Lokix new meta...?)
Rock is an especially massive deal, hitting 3/4 of sound resists for Super Effective. When stealth rocks exist, sound resists can't reliably get in. There's other stuff, but I'm tired. Laugh about the Fairy Dragon Steel core for me. (The only type core to have any answer to sound is fire water grass.)

Good video as always, but personally... I don't think we need any more types for the time being, instead I'd rather see rebalances to already existing types
Like for example if you just make water and fairy resisted by ice, you already massively buff one defensively weak type while nerfing two offensively powerful ones, without having to retype a bunch of old pokemon and/or make several new ones with the type in mind, and also prevents the scenario fairy and steel caused where by countering the other best types in the game (or ig moreso just "resisting everything" in the case of steel) you just create a new most dominant type
Again, video is good and all points are sound (pun genuinely unintended), I'm just a very firm believer in rebalancing the old before adding something new
