why would you use the hooked end, it would get caught up on something or grabbed. The weighting would be off too so surely it would be better to hold the cane as you would already be holding it ready for immediate use. Using the point for throat strikes and solar plexus strikes etc.
GENT MAGAZINE for one more mass also you can hook your opponent and as somebody who has practiced cane work i can assure you my limbs get hooked more often than my cane has been taken from the hook however the cane can be used both ways

I think that there are the two "styles" and the hook was used in hooking technics.
As why the use it both to hit... don't know.
