  • I visited Hardknott Roman Fort on Hardknott Pass in Cumbria. Not the easiest place to get to but definitely worth a visit!

Great video. We found this hidden treasure after getting to a point on Hard Knott Pass that was so steep that our camper would only wheel spin. So we had to put her into Neutral and roll backwards around a few extremely tight bends until we had enough space to turn around. Once we had turned around we found the carpark that you pointed to and decided to stay there until the morning.

It is an incredibly steep road and one I certainly wouldn’t want to roll backwards down! We’ll done. 😀 What a great way to discover something new though! 👍🏻

I've been to Hardknott fort in England when I was a kid. It sucked walking up there as a 7yr old, I don't doubt that it is the steepest road in England it certainly felt like it, lol. But it made me love Roman history that's for sure. I remember that they had a line in the walls that denoted what was original and which was restored to give people a better idea of visualizing what it would have been like.

That’s right it does have a slate line in the wall. It’s an amazing place. Can’t imagine what it would have been like stationed there in the middle of winter! 🥶

Roman name Mediobogdum ('middle of the bow') belongs at Watercrook, near Kendal. Hardknott's Roman name was Iuliocenon, a lightly Romanized version of Greek for 'treeless'. Both these names (in the Ravenna Cosmograph) are delightfully descriptive of their landscape situations.

I doubt that National Trust would permit It. Besides, it would never be suitable for tents! it's bleak, windy, boggy and cold! Perhaps a camper van could stay at a pull- in, but camper vans would really struggle on those gradients, sharp bends, and a single track road. I've driven that road more than once and its not for the faint hearted. I'd never drive it these days though, as its too busy, making it dangerous!

@@deborahwylde1410There is no camping on the grounds, but there's pretty much dispersed camping allowed every where else in the LD.
