I actually like the idea of having “regular” multitasking on the iPad and stage manager on the external display. I can see that being my main setup. I think both multitasking’s works for different situations. It’s what I like about the iPad, or the idea of the iPad hahaha, versatility.
iPad OS 16 with Stage Manager and second monitor support is definite improvement over iPad OS 15, but it still does not make my 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro with 2TB storage a standalone computer. For that I need to be able to unmount, repair and format external drives, run virtual machines, program in C++, run Pro Apps, etc. I rarely use my MacBook Pro these days, and I will never buy another Apple laptop because they have an antiquated UI, as I need a mobile device to have touch display and pen support. I am also now unlikely to upgrade my iPad Pro because I feel let down by Apple, as they are too focussed on marketing spin, and they completely fail to deliver customer requirements on the arrogant pre-text that they know best. I will probably replace my iPad Pro with a next generation Microsoft Surface Pro, preferably with either an AMD 6000 series APU or new high performance ARM processor (re: Microsoft / Qualcomm collaboration). Windows 11 has improved significantly over Windows 10, and I can readily run virtual machines and graphical Linux apps alongside my Windows apps. I've been using Apple products for over 20 years, and their hardware is excellent but their operating systems, especially iPad OS, seemed to be designed to frustrate by placing too many restrictions on what you can do, rather than delight the end user. Their rational around improved security is over played, and its more about getting you to buy more of their hardware, since the iPad is primarily designed as a Mac accessory (aka sidecar and universal control), and I have now come to point where I am reluctant to invest more effort and money in Apple's ecosystem.
It's simple... You're not Apple's target customer. It's designed for people that just want it to work and care more about the look and status of the Apple logo, use an iPhone like all their friends and have no interest or ability to do things like code, run a virtual machine, etc. I've got an Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro - the screen is a little more flexible than I would like but it's the most Apple version of a Windows dual use laptop/tablet. I like it much better than the Surface computers but that's just me
I really wish Apple would give us the option to reduce space between app icons and add more to the screens. You could fit like 20 icons in the space of 8!

Right?! With universal control you can drag things from one iPad to another (or a Mac) but you can’t drag windows from one screen to another with a single iPad. Weird.
Put iOS 16 Beta 3 on my M1 2TB iPad Pro and the secondary monitor only displays 1024 x 768 resolution on my 4K monitor. Both HDMI inputs and DisplayPort inputs present the iPad in this same low resolution. Is there a way to adjust the resolution from the iPad? Stage Manager doesn’t work at all.
I'm not moving to iPadOS until it has better concurrency. For example I need to be able to have Voice Control functional while I'm in a zoom meeting. Until this is a reality I'm staying with macOS.

I think that the issues you are facing might very well be due to the aspect ratio of the display, these issues may not be there if you connect the studio display or the pro XDR.
iPhone exclusive apps are not designed to be resized larger than iPhone displays. These resize issues are also present in the XDR display (so I am told, I do not own one). This is also why the resizing is somewhat limited and appears to be on a grid when using apps that have been designed for the iPad and other devices.

Hi very nice video thanks for this. External monitor support is different from stage manager, if you connect your iPad to external monitor and then connect a mouse to the iPad don’t care is this via cable or Bluetooth then the external monitor support kicks with the stage manager view on the external screen. So you don’t need to enable this.

Unfortunately it is Still an iPad, no matter what. It is just hacking a legacy system, the "iPad OS". Apple should rethink iPad OS and convert Mac OS to a lite one and call that iPad OS. And then we will have audio output, multiple audio/video playing, decent file handling. Then they should re-write the Files, to be able to select and keep iCloud files on the device. And this is the point where we can call it Macbook Air/Pad with TouchScreen

Being able to use stage manager in games is a massive game changer also adding other windows on top doesn’t distort or change the backround main app, definitely worth using over normal split screen now

“Clamshell” Workaround - dim screen (to minimize heat build-up while closed), then go to Settings > display & Brightness and turn Lock / Unlock toggle switch to the off position. Problem solved! Just make sure you’re plugged in to power and remember to change the setting when you’re ready to go mobile again. Also, congrats on joining 9 to 5 Mac! Sounds like a win for you and for 9 to 5 Mac. 😁🐬
I can’t get it to work. I’m on the 5th gen iPad Pro 12, using HyperDrive GEN2 Thunderbolt USBC dock, HDMI to a TCL TV. Anyone else using something like this? The TV shows up in Display & Brightness > Displays, settings on the iPad, but nothing shows on the screen… not mirroring or extending. Have even rebooted everything. LOL please help!

HOW should it work in clamshell mode if you don't have any input device connected? What kind of test was that...? No computer would work this way. You didn't put it in clamshell mode, you have simply closed it. For clamshell mode, it needs to have an external keyboard (and mouse) to be connected and also plugged it into the power supply. 😏

Don’t know if it’s a bad install but Stage Manager is FUBAR for me. I have the same iPad Pro you do. When I turn it on the background changes to solid gray and the pointer acts weird. When I connect it to an older 2K monitor via USB-C to Displayport I get the full screen desktop but the cursor will freeze randomly on the external and completely disappear on the iPP. I can’t run apps on the external. I have to move them from the iPP to the external. It’s unusable for me
External full screen support has been removed. Apple say it will be baclk later this year. Yeah right ! It was way way too usefull and they hated that ! I cant see it returning. Will will come up with a crappy reason like. Oh it was to buggy... No they just want pepple to buy a mac.
Will the iPad with iPadOS 16 replace my work MacBook? No. But i really hope, that I can use my iPad in the future as my main personal device on an external display. That is my main hope for the release of iPadOS 16. It can't replace my work Laptop at the moment because I need software that still doesn't have iPad versions. But I hope that I can use the iPad as my daily personal driver. It would be pleasing to use the work Laptop only for work.

Aside from stage manager the performance on my m1 ipd pro 19.9 in beta 3 is poor i constnatly get a dimmed brightness display, and i can;t use voice control, smart invert, and colour filters without it dimming. Espcially in games.

I preordered an M2 iPad pro 11 inch only because there is external monitor support. All I need is to use safari on an external monitor. Is it possible to use an external monitor on the iPad without using the stage manager for safari?
Can you check if it works with a bluetooth mouse and no magic keyboard. I have seen somewhere that you need a type adapter which has a usb for mouse dongle. That's the only question I had. Thanks for such an informative video
so screen sharing still doesn't work? It does seem like the app developers would have to make that work. Also, you know how you can have more than one instance of an app open? Well, I'm wondering if you can have one instance open on the iPad and the other instance open on the external monitor. What I'd like to be able to do is screen share the iPad screen with one notetaking app instance but have the external screen unshared with another instance of the notetaking app.

I don't think iPads will ever be able to run arbitrary code. In general computers are tending toward more restrictions, not fewer.

Lock screen customization for iPads?
None, it looks the same as it did on iPadOS 15, only the clock is different, it’s bolder and tints with the wallpaper.

Hi very nice video thanks for this. External monitor support is different from stage manager, if you connect your iPad to external monitor and then connect a mouse to the iPad don’t care is this via cable or Bluetooth then the external monitor support kicks with the stage manager view on the external screen. So you don’t need to enable this.

It was my understanding that if you just have the iPad connected and no Bluetooth mouse, it won't work?

Will the iPad with iPadOS 16 replace my work MacBook? No. But i really hope, that I can use my iPad in the future as my main personal device on an external display. That is my main hope for the release of iPadOS 16. It can't replace my work Laptop at the moment because I need software that still doesn't have iPad versions. But I hope that I can use the iPad as my daily personal driver. It would be pleasing to use the work Laptop only for work.

I noticed when the screen is locked and open, the external display wasn't locked. Does anyone know if it still works with the main screen locked? Are apps still shown on the external display in a locked state?

What if you take out the USB cable and plug it back in....will it remember all the windows you had open on the external monitor?
Aside from stage manager the performance on my m1 ipd pro 19.9 in beta 3 is poor i constnatly get a dimmed brightness display, and i can;t use voice control, smart invert, and colour filters without it dimming. Espcially in games.
I am not getting the crisp text as I get with my mac and windows on same monitor. I feel my iPad Pro 12.9 to my 32” Benq monitor is not cutting it in resolution there is some issue that no one is talking off
Can external displays run at high refresh rates, above 60?

I preordered an M2 iPad pro 11 inch only because there is external monitor support. All I need is to use safari on an external monitor. Is it possible to use an external monitor on the iPad without using the stage manager for safari?

Also, you know how you can have more than one instance of an app open? Well, I'm wondering if you can have one instance open on the iPad and the other instance open on the external monitor. What I'd like to be able to do is screen share the iPad screen with one notetaking app instance but have the external screen unshared with another instance of the notetaking app.
