Kent State was completely overmatched. It was never a contest. That said, the real season starts next week. Penn State will face a hot QB coupled with a physical running game. It won't be easy. Penn State will have to work hard to beat Illinois.
As a Penn State fan, I think it is time for a reality check: if the longest run from scrimmage against Kent State was only 18 yards, and we averaged 6.2 yards per carry against the worst team in the MAC, how do we think our running game will be against Illinois, let alone USC, Ohio State? I hope I am wrong, but I suspect this upcoming Illinois game will be extremely close, and if I we’re a bettor, I would take Illinois with the points.
"Comparison is the thief of joy." the "yardage differential" as well as the point differential is more important against a top 5 opponent, than a fund raising game for a struggling program. Leave it at "we played a good football team out there today, but we got a lot of work to do, to win the Big 18 Bi-Coastal Conference & National Championship."
Penalties are, and have been a huge problem now. I want to mention specifically that personal foul on OL, absolutely disgraceful. It better gets fixed. Soon.
Really liked what I saw from the offense and defense. Not so much from the head coach. He had the opportunity to show some class - up 49 to 0 with a minute and a half left in the game and Penn State is on the Kent State one yard line. Instead of taking a knee he runs the ball for a TD running up the score.
It's difficult to say how good PSU is or how Franklin is ever going to get a national championship. This is the easiest schedule they have had in years. They almost lost to Bowling Green. This was Kent State.

Just a few things to tweak prior to Illini & Trojans... 1. OL, 2. Pass Rush, 3. LBs, 4. Tackling. The skill players and play calling did well.
