Even comedies and late night shows drifted towards a more sarcastic and judgmental tone with The Daily Show and its progenies. Looking at other media, we experienced several years where the most popular movies were disaster films and dark, gritty re-imaginings of comic book characters. In music, the glam rock and hair metal of the 1970s-1980s gave way to bleak Seattle grunge and nu-metal in the mid-90s through the late ‘00s. I’m not saying there was a complete vacuum of more hopeful content, but there was absolutely a marked surge in less-than-optimistic programming that I think partially influences, and reflects, the collective psyche of society. Less than a quarter of those polled in France, Germany, and Japan, for example, believe they will be better off in 2025. In coming years, this pessimism is likely to spread in developing countries with large youthful populations but with slowing progress in eradicating poverty and meeting human development needs, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa.” According to an archived 1989 Washington Post article ( _Cynical? Who’s Cynical?_ by Don Oldenburg) Americans confidence in political and business institutions dropped precipitously starting in the 1950s, to the extent that researchers studying the trends in the 1980’s reported to be “tormented by their conclusions,” with the article stating they believe that, “…the comely brand of cynicism that has been called ‘intellectual dandyism’ is shifting to a darker and more sinister level of mistrust that has been called ‘intellectual treason.’” It goes on to say: { Combing through their survey data, the two researchers uncovered so much evidence of misanthropy as to send them back to their statistics fully expecting to find a miscalculation. There was no mistake. Beyond statistics, they found flesh-and-blood verification: employees who don't trust their bosses, store clerks who have contempt for customers, voters too disillusioned to vote, college students out to get theirs however they can, entrepreneurs doing unto others before others do unto them, ordinary people who despise other ordinary people. To put it simply, in the United States, at the close of the 1980s, Machiavelli lives. Numbers are telling of the fall of confidence.
