Had one of these since they came out. It's not a piece of software that can be custom configured to do anything, anytime. You have to put some time into learning the established workflow, but the reward is worth it. Don't believe everything you read from a few discontented individuals on the DSI forums who want this to function like an 808/909, MachineDrum, GenoQs, super device. It is what it is, and that's a very capable analog drum machine with clever performance functions. Like it or move on.
you know, after watching a bunch of tempest videos in preparation for buying a one, i wasnt at all confident in my ability to master such a complicated beast--well here i am with my new tempest and 24 hours in, i pretty much have most of it under my belt--roger's quick start video helped greatly, as this one does also...... love my tempest--awesome and well worth the money!!!
Yeah, this thing looks amazing, and I would love to get my hands on one to really wrap my mind around it. To be honest I was kinda put off by it at first, but everything I see about it just makes me want one more and more.
I've got the same piece of paper and everything on that list is checked off except full MIDI implementation. There are also quite a few people that don't seem to be experiencing "constant crashes".
I have one of these babies and - sigh - DSI are well known for their not-very-helpful instruction manuals. I learned more from you in this than I did in the whole manual...
Is it straightforward enough to assign one of the 6 outputs for specific pads / sounds? I'm very keen to grab one of these to augment the workflow i've structured with Maschine, and would love to add some analog drum synthesis to my style
"Too much talking"? It's essentially a tutorial, dude. The Tempest is one of the greatest rhythm machine's ever created, it's a total game changer. Unfortunately it's expensive, and very deep with a steep learning curve. The one who commits to learning it reaps the rewards.
great to see some hardware, you guys should be promoting it a bit more, and nowadays that analog is having its rebirth you should do some tutorials on how to integrate hardware in a DAW setup
Hi, I've just bought a tempest and when I use extra voice outs, other than the main L&R outs, I notice there is some sort of polyphony stealing going on, i.e. some sounds being cut short or not playing at all, do you know why this might be? Any help would be much appreciated, Ian
I far prefer to think opf my tempest as an analogue groove box rather than a drum machine. Its SO much more than a drum machine, along with my MPC its all I need for my live sets.
Thanks Reggie! You will be seeing more of me.. well.. at least videos that is.. I'm back on my workout program, so you will see less of me when it concerns my weight... ;-)
I just looked into the prices of Dub Spot courses. very not cheap. I would rather buy the gear and figure it out myself. Not paying over ten grand to learn Ableton and stuff. Nice idea if you can afford it but not my deal, that's my situation. Wish I could get some schooling. I am sure it would help
okay... This, i'm sure, is a stupid question: What is the difference between this and the Arturia Sparks drum machine? I'd still like to know from an expert. thank you.
Don Dorward I wouldn’t say Spark sucks. I got a Tempest about 6-7 months after it came out, and it’s been my favorite piece of hardware. I use the Spark app on my iPad, and it’s one of my favorite synth apps. To me they are pretty similar, and Spark actually fills in on the sample aspect where the Tempest falls short. The programming aspect is actually pretty similar, and I love how Spark has a full mixer and FX section for filling out its sounds and work flow. Together they make a pretty good team! I could see running the software version on a laptop, in tandem, and probably with more stability and MIDI capability than the iPad version.
It is a synthesizer, not a ROMPLER. The digital oscillators can and do hold sampled drum waveforms. If you have one wave form and a machine of this power why would you need samples, oh BTW it has 540 different wave forms including 808; 909; Lin Drum; and real"sampled" drum waves. So yes there are over 900 samples, there is a list in the instruction manual and yes they are listed as "SAMPLES"
Unfortunately, those of us that bought this thing a year and a half ago are still stuck with a buggy beatbox that crashes constantly, still lacks major features that were promised on a piece of paper when it was released, and a company that's already moved on to their next device, the Prophet 12, before the Tempest is even finished or fixed.
A little disappointed you opted for a more "traditional" drum pad layout. The default pad layout really seems more geared towards playing the tempest as an instrument. I think this is one of the more brilliant things Roger brought to the machine.
There's a lot of information here, but...95% of this is talking...talking...talking... This machine does all kinds of stuff...but you'll just hear ABOUT what it can do...not what it really sounds like.

Thanks one of true best Tempest tutorials I have seen.cheers!
Good to see James Bernard as a Free Agent on the Dubspot Team! This guy is such a great professional! Good draft choice Dubspot.
This is an awesome tutorial! Thanks guys!
great video thanks! love the tempest!
Click always routes out main output AFAIK so you could assign the pad groups to output on any pair of the 6 remaining outs to get a full stereo mix.
mpc style velocity sensitive pads with groovebox synth control this is what I have always dreamed of
Hey James,
Great to see you on the new gig at Dubspot!
Blessings…
Money, I need more of it!! Very sophisticated, I love how you can play perfect rolls live.
Sounds really good, another great electronic instrument, thank you Mr Linn!
This gentlemen is giving a great presentation.
Would I be wrong in saying the Tempest can also be a analogue synth with a step sequencer or a bass line sequencer like a 303?
Yes
This drum machine is the best money I've spent in 25 years of buying gear.
does it work though?
Purrs like a kitten.
I don't believe it!!!!
I learned a bunch, thanks !!!
Yeah, this thing looks amazing, and I would love to get my hands on one to really wrap my mind around it. To be honest I was kinda put off by it at first, but everything I see about it just makes me want one more and more.
Great video showing this beast off. BRB *picks one up at local shop*
I've got the same piece of paper and everything on that list is checked off except full MIDI implementation. There are also quite a few people that don't seem to be experiencing "constant crashes".
Looks super fun

it really is an analog groovebox more than a drum machine

Dr James Bernard will see you now.

sounds awesome...
5:19 where it all be startin
8:19 - the 'reverse' mode isn't reversing the same envelopes though :(
one hell of a review ty
Subscribed....Nicely done vid mate, thanks
I love this drum machine, though is there no way to turn the swing down to zero?
50% is 0 swing on this machine!
Kevin Seidel yeah I figured it out 😅
Joe Rogan of drum machines.
can i route a click track from the tempest through any out or through the headphone out?
sounds so amazing. super cash but probably the best drum machine ever made.
what kind of swing/groove can this Tempest do? a drum machine like this is most useful if I can easily apple groove templates.
Can't afford it now, but will surely get one before discontinued.

Assign individual voices, otherwise the Tempest will automate the process which can result in drops.
PH and I parted ways just before X-mas. Been woodshedding.. :D
I far prefer to think opf my tempest as an analogue groove box rather than a drum machine. Its SO much more than a drum machine, along with my MPC its all I need for my live sets.
Hello! How are you using the keyboard with the tempest? I.e. what leads etc? thanks good video :)
It's hooked up via the red MIDI-cable.
So...can it play the old LM-1 sounds or nah?
man this looks badace. very good explanation.
can you add your own sounds or kits?
A computer programing interface like the Tetra has would be a sweet addition.
where can we get a shirt like that??
Thanks Reggie! You will be seeing more of me.. well.. at least videos that is..
I'm back on my workout program, so you will see less of me when it concerns my weight... ;-)
1- and 2-pole filters are 6 and 12 dB/octave, not 12 and 24.
I just looked into the prices of Dub Spot courses.

Lynda.com
envelopes are really cool
haha, true. So now you're not 'tied' to a single production tool, which other DAWs do you love?
okay...
This, i'm sure, is a stupid question:

this is awesome-the spark sucks--i had spark and sold it,now i have the tempest and its not going anywhere........

I remember seeing the prototype of this maybe 5 years ago i think it was called "the boom chick" or something then.
good of course
Project mode is best. 8bars x2 u got 16 beat bars on your own. Awesome :))
you should really put a link on your youtube channel!
Think i found you anyhow :)
yea but does it compress m8?
dubspot gets free tempests if they give dave smith an 18 minute advert on their channel
to each his own
No samples in this machine?

And by the way - Best Review I've Seen On You Tube. Official.

by the way.. what the hell is up with my hands.. didn't realize I occasionally go all "limp wrist" when I get deep into a topic. I must fix that..
ive got one,...great machine...check out my 'Nuclear whale' soundcloud, mnost of my stuff has the tempest leading the charge!
if only it worked!
I realy like this machine. two great minds made a fire peice. vanmusicproduction check vids contact for music.
I only went with them so I could work with Chris Petti again.
Juuussssttt kidding.
The human interface does not look very intuitive.More for the nerds, less for the musicians?
PSYCCCCCCCC
actually, it does lol
lolz cute kicks I'll stick to my fat ass elektron rytm
:-)
Less talking. More sounds please.

There's a lot of information here, but...95% of this is talking...talking...talking...
