    It's just a belt of a certain colour. People complaining that he's not 'legit' think 'black belt' is synonymous with 'expert'. It is not. In Japan it's easy to get to sho-dan. Some sho-dan are excellent, even world-class; most are intermediate; some are pretty much still beginners. In Japan they don't have this mystique around it like Westerners. I got a shodan in Japan and I was (and still am) intermediate at best.

      TheOne111 : in Asia judo, karate, and TKD are electives in certain countries. Doesn’t mean every child does it. Instead of PE you may take Judo. But, once you do, this is part of your curriculum unto your done with school. Some compete... some don’t. Also, they don’t have the same attitude as the west. For them it’s about technique... in the West it’s about... does it work in a street fight. The west is more sport base... does it really work. For them it has a greater cultural significance.

      IMO, a shodan (black belt) would be probably a blue belt in BJJ, a Ni-dan would be a purple, and San-dan would be roughly about as dangerous as your run of the mill, local-level BJJ black belt... If a 1st degree black belt in judo tried to open a dojo, he'd be regarded as a joke. That being said- I prefer the BJJ ranking system, it's simpler and tends to yield higher quality black belts

    • @anarchic_ramblings
      @anarchic_ramblings 2 года назад +7

      @@larslee5341 That's a nice idea, but not consistently true. When I first got sho dan I was not blue belt level in bjj. Belt gradings in judo really don't mean very much. What matters is what medals you have.

  • @RobertoBren

    When two competitors of similar abilities meet, the more aggressive one who initialize takedown usually wins. The Judoka was very passive. Also there are varying degrees of skill among black belts, even from the same dojo.

  • @larslee5341
    @larslee5341 2 года назад +9

    I find that the current IJF rule system puts judoka at a distinct disadvantage
    when grappling wrestlers, Sambists, and BJJ guys... there are just so many impractical rules... no leg attacks... no holding unorthodox grips with out instant attack... short Newaza times... I love the history that judo has and the wealth of grappling techniques it technically has in it's vocabulary... but under the current rule system, Judoka usually struggle against other grapplers, UNLESS they cross-train frequently or are elite-athletes

    • @raphaelhudson
      @raphaelhudson 2 года назад +2

      Most judoka are pretty frustrated at the absurd below the belt rules. They literally passed a rule that bans a third of the techniques of judo, what a moronic thing to do . They haven’t made judo more entertaining. If anything it’s made it more static and more penalty based. That said look at Olympic karate if you want to see a sad story of rules ruining a competition art form . Luckily karate combat is reclaiming true karate . Hopefully the ijf will either some to it’s senses or a rival organisation will take over.

    All these comments about the Judo black belts skills are ignorant. First off, unlike our egotistical culture here in the states, they do not see the need to go one hundred percent on each other when they are clearly having fun. Its just not in their culture, they are highly respectable. All these comments from everyone else just proves it. I do both bjj and judo and I train with a friend and random guys inbetween my college classes outside of my own training time at the dojo/gym and I do not crank necks and slam people. Sambo has too many advantages over Judo! To begin with they are allowed to wear shoes providing more traction and stability secondly sombo allows leg attacks and Judo has prohibited that! I do not think that one is better than the other I think they are a good cross-training combination and sambo came from Judo

    • @willtoler6917
      @willtoler6917 2 года назад

      I would argue sambo is better than judo because I think learning to maul and control someone on the ground is much more valuable in a defense scenario than throwing someone

    • @williambreen4290
      @williambreen4290 2 года назад +2

      @@willtoler6917 that all depends on your personality and what your goals are as a martial artist regarding self-defense. Just remember one thing you're not going to be young forever and there will come a time where you won't be able to just control people and hold them down and mual them like khabib nurmagomedov! However with repeated sweeping and throwing techniques that require minimal effort especially if they are drilled to the point of no return 20 or 30 or 40 Years of your life and they become instinctual allowing you to throw someone on the ground hard and fast! That will usually take the fight right out of someone especially if you hit them before and after a throwing technique ending with a summation. But don't get me completely wrong this is not a sombo vs. Judo argument because I think they are both outstanding and I would love to cross-train the two of them because they are so similar! Russian sambo is basically Judo mixed with Western wrestling and leg locks and I think sombo even has their own variation of throwing techniques! I think sombo is better for the young martial artist and Judo is better for the Aging martial artist I don't think vice versa? Your thoughts would be appreciated though. Like I said I would love to cross-train two of them!

      @@nakmuay2485 All you did was type ad hominems, after claiming to be a Martial Artist that trains in multiple arts. (Boxing, Judo and whatever else)
      On top of that judged the judo guy in the video as low level. Then say, you have nothing to prove, even though you made claims.
      Do you see the hypocrisy in what you did?

    Obviously, these guys aren’t training at full capacity. You don’t think that Judoka could’ve hip tossed or arm dragged that Sambist? He easily could’ve, but as you can see (if you pay attention), they’re lightly sparring. Why go 100% and hurt your training partner? Makes no sense to. Especially if they’re friends. People have way too many opinions and “facts” to share. When in reality, both of these guys could fuck you up probably at full speed 🤷🏼‍♂️.

      sambo has advantage in grips - sambists more skilled in bloccking - have lower stance and uses even head to block -

    If this guy is really a black belt, then shame on him when you wear that black you need to wear the weight of it on you too not just to show off you’re a black show you worth it… even if it was just a training most of his techniques was wrong… a white belt or yellow belt would have done a better job than this guy

      I disagree, I've met many 1st degree black belts from Japan who "suck"...
      the difference is that in the west, most people only get their 1st degree black... in Japan, it is VERY common for judoka to get their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th degree black belts through intense competition... it's literally a college major at some colleges... at the higher ranks, black belts are fucking dangerous and can cripple you. Thank being said, belt rank inflation does make the art look weak
