Goldsboro almost ceased to exist. In early 1961 an Air Force bomber broke up in flight and an atomic bomb fell right outside town and was found in its parachute along a quiet country road. The bomb had three original safety switches to prevent accidental detonation, and a fourth one had just been added over the Air Force's objections that it was unnecessary. Examination of the bomb showed that the three original switches had failed, and only the fourth one - which, again, the military hadn't wanted - had prevented a nuclear detonation.
There were two bombs. Part of one is still buried about 180 feet below ground. There are seven switches. Not Four. All of those switches were original to the bomb. None were added against the Air Force's objection. The crash site is approximately 12 miles NE of Goldsboro. This town has improved from what it was when we moved here in 1980. The "downtown" or better known as Center Street was completely "remodeled". It is now a very nice area with restaurants, a very nice locally owned theater, traffic circles and a nice stage area near the police/fire complex. Of course it has it's problems, what small city doesn't. Nothing like the crime rate of Durham, Fayetteville or other larger cities. Traffic sucks, just like other places. I haven't been to the Mall in several years. It holds no attraction for us. I retired from Seymour Johnson June 1989. We stayed because I got a very good job with very good pay and benefits. But mostly because of the services available for our handicapped daughter. I had offers from my company to move to bigger cities. But the services needed were not available. Think about this. Your only an hour from Raleigh, 2 hours to the coast, five hours from the mountains.
I HATE IT HEREEEEEE . Greyhound is so unreliable I can’t even leave until I have enough for a Amtrak ticket. Ughhhhh I’ve lived here a year and been to that mall twice just for bath and body
Grew up in the heart of this city in the 80's. Loved uptown Goldsboro. All malls are dying everywhere. Glad to see Berkeley is still in fair shape, especially compared to malls in other towns in eastern NC. I live in Durham now and we just had a mall die about four years ago. Love my hometown and I will be back.
Hi, Belks was an original anchor. Weils was a local store that had a mall and an uptown location. Also they have landed Burlington Coat Factory as a new anchor in the Sears spot.
Goldsboro is basically a military town, it drives 70% of the economy, there is not much in Goldsboro other than the Hospital and Community College to contribute to the economy. Unfortunately there is a huge generational welfare segment that destroys everything.
I was born on SJAFB and grew up there in Goldsboro. Belks was downtown then moved to the mall. There was 3 mainstays in the 80's . Belk/JCPenney/Sears. It was full of stores and had an arcade right at the entrance. When you first walked in, to the right was a pizza place then the arcade. To the left there was a cafeteria that we went to on Sundays. Teens hung out there on the weekends at the arcade. I can't believe that GNC is still there but other than that, I don't recognize the other stores.
The mall is getting a 5 below & a Burlington very soon, they just opened Ulta in the mall as well! Next to the mall is a Target. And right around the corner is a Walmart! A lot of food places on Berkeley, or Wayne Memorial, including a Starbucks right infront of the mall, in Target, or Wayne memorial!! And some boutiques that have left the mall to expand are just right down the road! Dicks and Dunhams are close by as well. Downtown Goldsboro has a few boutiques, coffee, and pizza shops to visit! A bowling alley and movie theater on and off the base as well!
and I live here now it is fine food offerings are what you would find in most medium sized towns we have 3 Walmarts if that means anything to you. A Supercenter and 2 neighborhood markets. You did not go to one of the local places for food. It is better than the chain offerings. Great Video though Thanks for visiting.
I'm vegetarian, but I would eat meat/poultry for a week or two just to try out all the poultry products at Chick Fil A. I heard good stuff about it. I'm from Montreal, Quebec and they don't even have one location here. I wish they could open up a location.
@@BoratWanksta I just read on Google that there were actually only six locations and all of them are located in the greater Toronto area. I read that they want to expand more locations in Ontario plus Alberta.
@@BoratWanksta In Montreal they only have one Bath and Body Works location at the Eaton Centre. Most of the time when I'm walking on Ste. Catherine street downtown, I always see people on the street with blue and white BBW'S bags. It would be the same with Chick Fil A. I can picture it already.
Chic-fil-a closed the mall location and opened the free-standing store 1/2 mile north on Berkeley Blvd. They are super busying there every day...except Sunday.
I just saw cbl and associates are sending the keys to westgate mall spartanburg and another mall in the triad area back to the lenders in the immediate future. I hear mike kohan knocking......
@@renardfranse Moonbeam isn't buying new malls, and I think is only down to like 3 malls they own at this point? Born and raised in Goldsboro. Moved away for a stint or two but moved back about 2 years ago. My wife and I love it here. Theres not really a lot to do ill admit but its not as bad as they make it out to be. That mall was the place to go back when I was a kid, but now its pretty dead. You did miss the creepy animatronic animals they put in the center for Christmas time and be thankful for that. I did work in this mall right after high school in a temporary Halloween Shop. It's funny I haven't been in there in so long and I'm 10 minutes away from there lol. Also a good chunk of what you said about Goldsboro is pretty much true.I'm local so I can't argue with it.Though we have a local Chinese restaurant that serves amazing food.
The thing is, most people who sustain Goldsboro's economy (even military non-civilians) do not live in Goldsboro. They live on the outskirks of Goldsboro. Its somewhat peculiar. In bigger cities, some of the wealthiest citizens live downtown or in town, but in a small town like Goldsboro, it's the opposite. This is why Goldsboro recieve so many negative ratings. The city is considered one of the poorest in the State and country.
I’d be buying all the land I could in Goldsboro. All the people in the big blue cities are coming to NC. Goldsboro has always just barely survived but it’s time is coming as the country slowly falls apart and the north becomes irrelevant, This mall has always been vintage and cool. Love it !!
Ok…. Now I remember this mall because we have been to goldsboro for the huge athletic field complex a few times for lacrosse, but never into the mall. They have many large regional tournaments for soccer and lacrosse all year long. We will have to check this place out next time up there.
I love the outside of this place. I love that teal architecture. If only they would have it on the inside as well, that would be awesome and more decorative. Nice video Doomie as usual.
Goldsboro is nit as bad as you've heard it's worse! The crime, unemployment, wages are very bad. It would be a perfect place to for retirees if it wasn't for the spike in crime. The only thing keeping this town afloat is the Air Force Base.
Lol about Goldsboro, Doomie. I lived in New Bern for 10 1/2 years, & for awhile I was engaged to a young man enrolled in the Air Force ROTC at ECU, & we attended some sort of gathering at Seymour Johnson AFB in the late 80's. And lordy lordy, I haven't heard the name "Brody's" in decades! Never went shopping in one, but heard their ads on the radio all the time.
The natural light in the central area is lovely, but there's something about those side corridors - with their squeaky clean floors, drop ceilings, dim lighting, and out-of-fashion storefronts - that seems more abandoned than some of the *actually* abandoned malls you've covered.
Idk about bad food...theres a burrito joint on the other side of dicks sporting good (which is across from the side entrance of jcpenny) thats hittin Goldsboro is very very boring though. You have to go to like raleigh to get some entertainment lol
Thanks for this video. I haven’t been to the mall since Covid! Soo much has changed. Can’t believe the pretzel shop closed down! Geesh! Soo many empty stores for lease.
Nice mall. Too bad it's empty. It looks really clean and the floors shine. Sad to see the malls dying out. It was fun shopping before the internet when we had privacy. Now our every breath is tracked. Good job again and I like the music, too.
The town isn't a bad place I don’t think, just boring as hell. The air force base and collage are probably the only reasons for anyone to consider going, well besides if you just want somewhere cheap and quiet to hermit away in.
Don't update this mall... the vintage look is too much a part of it! GQ Fashions, in particular, looks like an original mall store with its original look.
I grew up in Goldsboro on Seymour Johnston AFB from about ‘82 -‘93. I have a good friends that still live there and I come by on extended visits. I am sitting right outside of Goldsboro as I write this. My family was Air Force, and yes the base is the only thing that makes Goldsboro important at all. Crime, schools (which I graduated from), and livability fully deserve the F ratings. Food here is awful, everything is and always has been run down, decades behind the times, and the wealth disparity between a few really rich folks and everyone else is striking. There is no industry to speak of, racism is rampant, everyone (of all races) delight in ignorance, and have low expectations of themselves and others. It’s miserable in Wayne County, but they seem pretty proud of that misery. I have traveled to every state in the country and spend extended periods of time in every corner of it. The only places I have seen that eclipse Goldsboro in sheer depressive ambiance are parts of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and bad neighborhoods in Chicago, Detroit, Oakland, Atlanta, and Columbus. So, if you want the crime, depression, lack of opportunity, and soul-crushing despair of these exotic locales with a small depression era city surrounded by oppressive humidity and mosquito laden pine forrest charm, Goldsboro may be right for you.
