The engine wasn't truly optimized to take advantage of either system. It was developed before DC hardware was finalized, I think the DC could have run the game at 60, but this is a comparison of what we actually got. You can't see from a video as much, but I've played both versions and find that the GC version is a bit more twitchy in the controls and is prone to more random glitchy physics than the DC version is (a bit noticeable at the whale chase). The GC also has bad framerate issues. The DC is locked at 30fps most of the time, the GC version fluctuates from 60 to below 30. This was remedied in the XBLA/PSN version and that is locked at 60fps. I do think the DC has superior textures, I don't know why they felt the need to change them in the first place. I also dislike the updated character models (mostly), and their plastic shine, they had some nice texture mapping on DC, they should have just increased the polys and kept the textures. For these reasons, the DC is superior to the GC version.

I prefer the Dreamcast version, even though the models on that one look kind of bad. The models in that version give off a modern yet classic feel to the game, like how Dreamcast Sonic somewhat reminds me of Classic Sonic. Also, the lighting and overall handling of the Dreamcast version looks better to me than the GameCube version, which has better character models, minor improvements like 60 FPS all the time, but awfully terrible lighting and it's unstable feel to it than the Dreamcast version. The FPS doesn't really matter at all to me in both versions, whether some scenes or segments of gameplay were 30 FPS or not.
But hey, all of this is my personal opinion!

    • @capcom23

but gamecube doesn't feel smooth when running at the "60"fps.. 30fps on dreamcast is somehow more stable and smoother. I even have the PC version and the fps is not smooth. They should've spend a bit more time on that on a smoother experience. I keep playing dreamcast version because of that

The gamecube/PC version is slightly more refined (and the PC version has several mods dedicated to improving it's performance). However it's missing loads of small little effects that gave the Dreamcast version more atmosphere. Loads of ambient sound effects and dynamic lighting effects throughout the game are absent (compare the Final Egg base in both versions for example, especially during Gamma's intro, way darker and creepier in the Dreamcast version).

It's amazing what Sonic Team pulled off with the original DC version. It was designed with only estimated specs of the final hardware. They played it safe and designed the engine around those specs, not even fully optimized for the final DC design, but the DC handles it like a champ. The engine itself probably could not have handled 60fps even on a DC even though there is enough extra power there, and I blame the engine for that poor performance on the Gamecube as well. I think there is just so much power behind the 360/PS3 that it just powers through the issues with brute force (sort of like how Xbox emulation works on Xbone). I like the textures of the DC version much better than the GC version, however, I like the new baked in lighting/shadows that they put in on the level textures, it makes it come to life more than before. The SA2 engine was much better designed, as Sonic Team was already quite used to the DC hardware by then, and thanks to the similarity in GC hardware and much less being updated in comparison to the SADX port, it turned out much better. I argue that a poor engine not fully optimized to the DC final hardware is why Shenmue doesn't look as good as it should either, like the high res models in the prologue disc that were made much later in development. AM2 projected the DC to have 8MB RAM while the final was 16MB, the Shenmue engine was designed around that, and unfortunately Shenmue II shares the same engine, although much better optimized, it's not designed with the final DC hardware in mind.

If you don't believe me, you can watch ExoParadigmGamer's ROR on SA1 and SA2, which also shows that most, if not all the glitches have to be done on purpose. And while the GCN and PSN versions do have more glitches, there's still a glitch that is in the DC version so none of the 3 versions are glitch-free.

Weird. I sort of like the brighter colors better in the Gamecube version but the lighting is abysmal. Which is even weirder because it looks like DX has shadows for static objects. But the colors aren't worth a damn because the textures don't have any smoothing. It really looks like the DC one is utilizing some kind of native post-processing shader that really makes everything look so much smoother and easier to look at.
