That’s what life vests are for. I’m sure there are some not too bulky that will keep you afloat in the sea and that you could wear all the time when onboard. Regardless, swimming is overrated when you’re so far from any shore with nowhere to swim to 😁

I remember reading a book in the 70s called Survive the Savage Sea about a family adrift at sea. They were adrift for 37 days. In the telling of the story, when rescued, the crew on the boat could hardly get near them because of the smell coming off them. They were rubbing "fish oil" on their body because of the exposure burns.

The whaling ship Essex was sunk by a vengeful whale, (I think it was a Humpback) off the Chilean coast in the 1800s. They had little time to salvage anything from the sinking ship before abandoning it. Boarding several skiffs, the survivors were soon scattered after a storm, unlike this couple things didn't end well for most of the crew. The only survivors resorted to cannibalism and not the "let's eat dead people" variety. Herman Melville's Moby Dick is rumoured to be based upon the story. I'm new to your channel and am really enjoying playing catch-up, it's a pleasant change from listening to the better known but usually fatal outcomes prevalent on this format. Thank you.

I love the adventures that you talk about as they speak to the essence of my soul, wanting to explore this extraordinary world that God created. They always SAY! You step UP into the life raft 😉 That's the time to abandon ship ..Obviously this couple were well prepared with survival preparations ..

He sure as hell knew how to get my Mother onboard😂 ...Scared her to death..I know it was this book cos of the Holing by the whale !! Nothing wrong with this design or the hull material. A lot of people cast doubt on their story at the time as they were in remarkably good shape when they were rescued. They had no ocean sailing experience other than cruising the South coast of England. Also the fact that they were of the office workers ilk rather than the hardy outdoor adventurous types.

    2400 kilometers is 1491 miles‼️
San Diego CA to Houston TX is 1469 so 22 less but close enough to get an idea.

In some of the early photos, they look more like father and daughter, than a couple 1:28 but in fact he was only 3 years older. In 1873, he was 35 and she was 32.

I remember hearing this story as a kid, when they were found it was big news. Trigger fish are delicious cooked, not sure about raw, im sure most things taste good when you're hungry.
Everyone, please teach your children how to swim.

I’m sure Maurice did a lot more to help them survive than he was given credit for in this video.

I love the ending: They became vegetarians, didn't want to ever eat animals again! To answer your question, Having been vegetarian for 57 years (since I was 11), I can't imagine I could eat turtles, blue footed boobies or anything else. But we never truly know what we'd do until we are in a situation that challenges our beliefs.

I think you get to a point where you'd kill anything to eat.

It’s infuriating that Maralyn didn’t know how to swim considering what they were doing
