He spent a year preparing for the trip yet still went completely unprepared.
aka he spent a year dreaming about fun and not doing actual prep work.
He’s another Christopher mcandless. I’m so sick of people like this
Stepdaddy will fund my adventure! I bet all those investors are happy they did not fund him!!!
Devils in the details
Many died fully prepared, your will to survive is more important. Preparation should also help
I guess he figured he could become a motivational speaker for people who dream about adventure without realizing they are listening to an idiot.
Great comment!
😂😂😂Funny
It's like people who watch videos about going off grid as they sit in a well furnished apartment that is strewn with labour saving devices and then they go on their little Instagram selfie adventure only to find out that it's actually a tedious lifestyle of being alternately shivering from cold and exhausted from heat and of endless chores. And so then they give up after merely the first time they have to drive five hours to the nearest hospital because their exhaustion leads them to a mishap while chopping wood in the endless rain.
😂😂😂😂 is it bad we r all sitting here on our phone being judgey judgers😂😂😂😂
@@SofaKingShit😂😂😂 for real people have no idea what farming or living off grid is really like! Mouthing off from their furnished houses 😂
….and after all of this Tedx gave him a platform to reframe his ill conceived plan as a heroic journey of compassion.
Getting shot doesn't make you a hero. You are still the same guy, except you have a few holes in you. And holes in your body are a sure sign of bad judgement.
The quality of TED talks has drastically deteriorated
Apparently u can buy your way to a TedTalk
Tedx isn't run bye the same people who do ted talks, anybody can do tedx. I could host one at my school
Yea Ted x isn't TED. It's like RUclips. Anyone can do it that's why the X
The villagers are the heroes here. Hope he repaid them in some way for their efforts to save him.
A stranger from village woke him up suddenly & gave him a blanket : )
Absolutely
Yeah, I was gonna say. He's not really the main character here. Somewhere out there, they're telling a story about an injured foreigner that they rescued
I would expect more realistic approach from South African.
OfCourse he didn't... just made his book got his adventure paid by everyone else now he chill have a cruise for the rest of his life
He was irritated with the lack of urgency from the locals. Imagine being that unaware of your situation. These are people who live off what the jungle provides them for medicine & likely don't even have a word for hospital in their language. If they get seriously injured, they die. They don't cut their fantasy adventure short & go home. They LIVE out there.
ikr! just another rich white guy with an ego
To be fair, i think anyone who thinks they are dying acts exactly like that.
Even if the nurses/firefighters/whatever are doing the most, you can’t help but be like “omg act faster, i’m dying, try harder”
It’s normal, you are MAJORLY panicking and fearing for your life
@@sarads7877yeah but he didn't even explain why they wouldn't think that, like "they probably didn't know the extent of my injuries..etc"
Interesting fact, the majority of the people who live on the river are mestizo settlers, people who couldn’t cut it in Brazilian cities.
Everyobe is so quick to judge yet knows even less what they are talking about. Amazon locals aren't neccessarily natives. Often their criminals cartels or the losers of hypercapitalism who retreat there. And anyone dying feels a sense of urgency.
.I actually judge his motivations much more harshly than his methods or naivete. Alot of this is just stuff that's likely to happen with very little you can do to eeter it if you want to have the experience. Like if you go to enough bad cities, you will get robbed a few times. It doesn't mean you did anything wrong. It's just a risk. There IS no way to make it safe. But the real thing that I judge is his whole reason for doing this - he says at beginning - he wants a way to gain money and influence and he thought doing adventures would get him there.
How this guy survived the Amazon without his frontal cortex developed is beyond me.
7:16 So, the short answer to the question “how do they afford it?” is… rich parents.
Who could have guessed.
Obviously he was privileged I been ripped off befor out of place in a city you don't go off on a rage thinking u can get your hat back
And yet, he got his hat back.
😂
@@mattmatt6572 I knew that as soon as she said he was a vegan 🤣
Also, people who are retired, debt-free, and single or widowed can afford it indefinitely.
“Davey didn’t think too far ahead”
Seems to be the common thread in this story.
Also, repeatedly dismissing the advice of locals.
This dude plundered resources from everyone around him including people with very limited resources then profited off it all 🤢 no admiration in that, but still loved learning about it from RUclips's new greatest storyteller!
Truer words have never been spoken
The hubris and naïveté is just startling. While the story is amazing, this sort of extreme risk taking is beyond foolhardy.
Exactly. A complete idiot.
Lol the fact that he's also South African makes it even better. This sort of behaviour is just in his blood.
But hey, he got his TED talk! 🙄🤢
Swim down amazon river with no life jacket, no paddling experience, alone, what was he thinking?
Isn't there Croc's in the Amazon and Hippos???
@@zipmegolden The huge black caimans is living in the river. 4 meters long or 13 feet.
No hippos. They live in Africa.
Was he thinking?
There, fixed it for you.
@merrymaid2890 AH, thanks. Bullsharks? Anyway, he made foolish mistakes.
Oh, to have the confidence of a mediocre white male… Those silly locals don’t know what they’re talking about!
A true example of "f*ck around and find out".
😂
If locals were to advise me against doing something, I would listen to them and plan accordingly. Glad he made it out alive. Kudos to all the villagers who helped him along the way. He owes his life to them.
Youthful arrogance nearly killed him. I hope the next time someone tells him something is very dangerous that he listens. It is thanks to the compassion of all those villagers that he survived his ordeal. Absolutely loved how you told this story. Thanks so much for your efforts in putting it together.
It doesn’t sound just as arrogance. I mean arrogance is assuming he will be able to manage the danger, but not taking life jacket for a trip on the Amazon river? I don’t know what to think of that.
I wonder, what was his thought process behind all this. Not taking the jacket, taking the boat he had no experience with... When I started running regularly, I got an advice, do not take any new gear at a race, however tempting it might be to boast new shoes. Take something you are used to. And he took a folding kayak which was new to him to the Amazon trip... I just cannot wrap my head around this.
These two kids, him and the girl in the other Amazon video, have what I call book smartness. Educated to the point of knowing about things, but having not a lick of common sense or logic, to make intelligent plans and good choices. Having been warned by several people not to go, they forged ahead anyway, with no real knowledge that would serve them well. The world is full of them. God help us! I'll take the later anytime!
Foolish man, only hears what he wants to hear, disregards people who know, goes alone.
Bro its so much more than jst youthful arrogance...this man survived one lucky gruelling adventure, which shouldve knocked him on his a$$ and humbled him, but NO!
"Lets scale the damn Amazon, without experience or guidance"
IMO thats the definition of stupidity...To think his Family allowed him to even try this hurts me, because they should know better! Its their job to guide and protect him, not send the poor boy into the fukn rainforest in Brazil and fund it too!!!
No life jacket are you kidding
I couldn't believe it when I read that.
I mean be so for real 😂 My 8 year old son could tell you that paddling a major river necessitates a life jacket
The concept of “fundraising” so you can go on vacation/adventure is pretty funny. Like … this guy wasn’t an athlete. Just some guy. He couldn’t find sponsors, so his step dad “sponsored” him. What a privilege to be able to run to mom and dad when you can’t pay for your own world travels 😂
Wow, sounds like you're very bitter that your parents weren't as helping or wealthy as his.
@@RationallySkepticalI think he/she is spot on.
Firstly he expected sponsors and never considered he has nothing to offer.
Secondly he has no pride as a man. Adult man doesn't beg parents to finance his trip. He should have waited year or two, earned money and meanwhile researching the Amazon.
@@RationallySkeptical According to your comments you are not too rational and not really skeptical.
@@puclopuclik4108 When I heard he was talking about his trip to the amazon all the time, I was thinking he doing that so his parents offer him the money and he doesn't have to ask them.

Oh good. Davey's gonna pass along his wisdom to his kids. Just what the world needs.
There is something childlike about the plan to carry out this adventure. It's like something out of the books we read as children! However, no normal person, no adult would want to undertake such a journey, especially alone. The young man was extremely lucky. The villagers were really great, they saved his life.
This self-appointed adventure went into this with not even a basic understanding of what tasks would need to be undertaken for this trek to be completed, and then went on to willfully ignore experienced people’s warnings. If it weren’t those two pitiless attackers in the boat, it would have likely been someone or something else (or just his disposable kayak falling apart) who would have tragically ended the journey. Hopefully this person has used some of the spoils from the book and speaking opportunities to repay those who so freely and willingly stopped their lives and contributed what they had to save him.
The way he even keeps repeating "adventure" leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Glad others picked up on that
Ok. Ok. Ok. It was a hat. Dude takes hat, you laugh, maybe get a better hat from new friends. Idk, dobt tackle a dude over a cap. It isn't that bad.
He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. He thought that the world was a safe and gentle place.
After being mugged 3 times too!!
"Who needs a life jacket ?"
As a south african he knew the world wasn’t safe and gentle.
Yup. He sounds like a bit of an idiot. Most vegans are. By the way I am originally from South Africa. Now in Australia 🇦🇺
A typical liberal!
This video was almost impossible to get through. Not against the video itself, it was wonderful, as always. It’s the guy the video is about…I cannot stand this kid lol. In the beginning when he was saying how he had all of these “important teachings” to teach to the world…I think my eyes rolled so hard that they’ve rolled from here in the Colorado Rockies all the way down to Texas. Teaching what exactly? How you too can achieve your dreams as long as you’re young, healthy, and come from an affluent family? How easy it is to traipse around the world on adventures as long as your family can not only finance the trip, but also support you so that you don’t have to have a job? And his “worthwhile cause” might have been the worst. He wasn’t doing any of this for a cause or to help anyone else. He says it himself in the beginning. He did this to give himself cred in order to make money from it. He wanted to do Ted talks and write books. That’s the only reason he did it. Add his arrogance and over-confidence on top of that, and he’s extremely unlikeable. I’m honestly surprised that so many people pay money to hear him speak.
From the clips from his TED talks, he seems to me to have learned something about his ego, and also the humility to acknowledge he only made it with the compassion and aid of strangers putting themselves in difficult circumstances. I'd say this wasn't what he envisioned when talking to a TED audience, but I think he realizes this is the message he's destined to deliver...it's not about the "adventure" but what he's learned as a human being. I'd pay to hear that.
I bet all these 'important teachings' would consist of shallow platitudes you'd see on motivational posters in middle school class rooms. You know the kind that sound meaningful and deep on the surface but break under the tiniest bit of scrutiny. Like this dude!
He put dozens of indigenous people in danger and had the audacity to get impacient and frustrated when they couldn't get a private jet to save his life. And now he sells his story as one of self growth. These types of situations should be considered criminal offenses and charged. I'm not even exaggerating.
i'd pay money to hear him not speak. such a foolish annoyance of a person. the living embodiment of a fail son
@Fallocaust The teaching is, don't do stupid stuff as I do.
What a rollercoaster ride this story was. I never went so fast from admiring someone's pioneering and adventurous spirit to thinking what an irresponsible, clueless nutcase. I wonder if at this point poor Amazonian villagers have neighborhood committee meetings where they discuss how they're going to mitigate constant increase in expenses for saving clueless tourists from injury and death. Great story, and so well told, as always.
Great description, spot on. I love that he’s pretty honest about it all and has given up adventuring.
Word. My aunt and uncle lived and worked in Lima for many years, both my cousins born there. He worked for some super-contractor that was there building some kind of infrastructure project, a dam I think, and my aunt worked at the consulate. Anyway, long after they retired they talked about the Shining Path, just marveling how such a dangerous and horrible group came out of the people of Peru. Most of them are like the villagers in this story, they are kind and giving nearly to a fault. LOL, and my uncle used to tell stories of foreigners that were dumb enough to "tourist" in places they had no business being in, doing dumb tourist things. They brought back some beautiful handmade items with them--a gorgeous bright red llama-yarn scarf, a hand-woven llama-wool wall hanging, and handmade gold and opal jewelry, which I still have since my uncle left it to my Dad, who then left it to me. Anyway, this was an interesting story, kind of perked my interest because of the location--and the wonderful people of Peru.
So was his first book called clueless? Seems appropriate
😅
Or What-aTwonk.
😂😂😂
How he had set himself up was incredibly irritating. His "i know better" attitude left me frustrated as i heard this unfold haha, his mentality was that of a teenager who thinks they are untouchable. I am absolutely baffled he survived to be blunt, the locals absolutely were lifesavers, that was heartwarming honestly. Thankyou for the video! I always am entertained both by the information presented and your humor :)
I hope from all his appearances and books that he gave back to those communities that helped him. I can't help but think his adventuring was just self indulgent, selfish and naive he was lucky
💯 %
Exactly my first thought! I've traveled in similar ways in exactly the same places. Those people spent money they need saving his life. He was right that most places on earth are far safer than his home town, but Davey was a terrible survivalist and not too street smart. His next trip should have been backpacking to the villages that saved him with some cash.
Just like Amazon kayaker Emma Kelty, if the locals tell you certain places are too dangerous and you shouldn't go....you should probably listen to them.
villagers have a very low tolerance to unknown.... i myself got warned a million times in Venezuela, Nicaragua and other places..... i felt pretty safe all around..... live is risky, one cant live in fear all the time.... he made a few poor choices (naive) but his adventurous spirit were fairly remarkable. A lot of people judging him on the comment section have never lifted their butts off their sofas.... i saw many "tourists" in Mexico that never left the resort..... pathetic to say the least.
He went to paddle the amazon with no paddling experience, no life jacket. Sorry, that is not adventurous spirit that is completely idiotic.
@@GodiscomingBhappy "few poor choices" :) Almost all of his choices was poor.
Being reasonable does not mean you living in fear, it means you are smart.
You are very judgemental.
Wow! So fortunate to have the help of the villagers to get him to medical care. Amazing to survive that!
Way too young and inexperienced to take on the Amazon, let alone doing it on his own
A sense of adventure, a lot of money , a lot of time, and a big death wish .
I have no words for this one. There's no point in going over what Davey did wrong. Everything he did from the moment he boarded that plane is so reckless it comes across as childlike.
He got his story. I wonder if Davey shared any of the proceeds of his book with those selfless locals that saved his life? I doubt it.
exactly.
Remember that he was annoyed that "there wasn't a sense of urgency". Lots of compassion he has.
Invincible spirit not overly intelligent, though
When you do these adventures, cycling or canoeing, in remote areas - the thugs know you carry everything with you. You are so vulnerable. Deranged people shooting indiscriminately at an innocent man. However, he was so lucky to meet such lovely, generous indigenous people who tried to help.
Yeah, they basically just want your stuff and have no qualms killing you for it.
It's funny how accurate that is. I knew it but there's little way around it some times. In Sao Paulo I had an 80 litre pack and the beggars were relentless. It's an instant way to stand out as a tourist. Eventually I was used to the beggars, but got complacent. A group of young men approached me and a few bills did not satisfy them. I got hit a few times and they were reaching into my pockets. Lost phone and wallet to the degenerates and they ruined the trip. Can't say I'm not glad they live in abject poverty and at least one may be dead from gang violence by now.
@@mikew3194 wild take to respond to being robbed by thinking "jokes on them they're poor" like yeah that's why they robbed you dude their lives suck it's not a punishment when it's just their reality lmao

Not stealing when you get the opportunity is considered being a dumb a s s in a lot of cultures. It's why the black and brown people in the west are ceiminals.
Lucky to be alive, is an understatement. He appears to have been humbled by the experience, he surely needed it.
I think I know why his stepfather bank rolled his adventure. He wanted this kook off his couch.
I think you're partially right. It was more like getting him out of the house to do something with his life, anything.
Well said and funny too.
Great story, great telling!
20:14 "this is ridiculous!" 🤣😆😂
I couldn’t hold back, even though I knew it was coming! Telling it out loud hits different. 😂
I appreciated that you were clearly trying to hold back! İt would have been impossible to not react to "no life jacket" and the tire... ridiculous barely covers it!
I feel like the main difference between the advice he had received was that his family and friends were warning him against countries they had maybe never even been to VS. locals warning against something they are familiar with
I spent a while in Peru when I was younger (decades ago) and visited the Amazon when I was there. I am not a survival specialist, but I got the impression it's not a place you want to underestimate.
You always tell these stories so well. It's been cool to watch your channel grow, you deserve it!
Thank you so much!
I know ! Let's hike, cycle and kayak the source of the Amazon solo without knowing a thing about it. 😮 What could possibly go wrong???😅
He definitely went in a bit unaware!
Truth! No life jacket tells that he feels invisible. Dumb kids.
And who could we possibly bother, and what animals could we possibly disturb, and what invasive species and microbes could we possibly be dragging into jungles and remote villages?
The ironic thing though is that it was a couple of gang members with a shotgun that finally ended his trip.
Rather than approach others for sponsorship, what about self-funding the expedition? In other words, work for several years and save money towards the goal.
That's a naive sentiment. There are thousands of people who have their adventurous lifestyles bankrolled by sponsoring companies that, in turn sell the lifestyle (or at least the appearance thereof) to us working schmucks. Don't get me wrong, those athletes and adventurers have to hustle and don't get wealthy, unless they are photogenic women.
He thought: "I need cash," and then started looking around for victims. I don't think that the idea of working for the money ever entered his head.
My thoughts exactly. I’ve been saving myself to do Australia. No excuse, there are plenty of ways and means to make extra money.
Everyone has a purpose in life. Sometimes that purpose is to serve as a warning to others.
I didn't a warning not to cross the Amazon alone
While I respect this young man’s vision and tenacity, I do think he was not practically prepared for what he wanted to do. I have been on the Amazon River, and while it is gorgeous, it can also be extremely dangerous (as can the surrounding lands). He is incredibly lucky to be alive!! Thank you for sharing his story. ❤
Well, he got his story, I guess.. what an incredibly lucky man (to have survived all that)
Wow, what a story and what an adventure! I live in Brasil and there is no way I will even wander into the Atlantic Wilderness (Mata Atlantica) that covers the mountains near where I live, they are so dense with vegetation! I grew up in Virginia, USA and feel much more comfortable wandering through the woods than the wilderness down here. It's beautiful but it can be deadly and dangerous. This story really gave me a roller coaster of feelings from excitement, to doubt, to disbelief in some of his decisions to relief and joy. Great video, thanks for telling it so well and I agree with another comment here, it is so nice to have a Female RUclipsr talking about outdoor adventures/disasters!
Thanks so much for watching! I felt the same reading his book and had to stop and re-read, NO lifejacket?!?!! 😳
No life jacket. But a satellite phone to call his parents as he’s being eaten or murdered. 🙄 I’m more prepared going to my cottage for the weekend than this guy. Bigger balls than brains so kudos for surviving!
Ahh the wealthy stepdad bit. Nice work for those lucky enough.
When people go overseas it is their responsibility to take out insurance. Not wait to have an accident then rely on everyone else to pay up for you. I don't go anywhere unless I have insurance.
some doctors and hospitals want cash. does not matter if you have insurance. in some regions cash or nothing done
In my profession as an engineer, I've had the opportunity (if you want to call it that), so spend a good bit of time for work in several countries in Africa, and also Peru, Ecuador and a few other countries down there. Let me tell ya, I learned the world is a dangerous place. I read about this guy duPlessis after his Amazon experience and the only words that came to my mind were 'flaming idiot'.
Davey was a very lucky man indeed, he was blessed to come across very compassionate people and i hope he appreciated and Thank you beautiful human being's.
Arrogance and youthful 'i'm invisible'
Thank you for excellent narration and research
He ignored all the warnings and reality. Got into huge trouble, then expected everyone else to solve the problems he created, at great expense and trouble to themselves. And now he's a motivational speaker.
Maybe his upbringing in an incredibly emotionally secure and loving environment, combined with a idealistic outlook of almost unrealistic proportions, led him to an adulthood where he considered stubbornness to be determination.
All of his ultimate survival and success is of course a great source of inspirational anecdote. But his emotional immaturity in considering the impact on his family should something go wrong if he was over confident and under- prepared, and somewhat unteachable- drains his story of some of that inspiration for me. And mirrors the same attitudes of many adventurers who spend all their time and money away from family preparing poorly for blind, grandiose missions in order to be part of some adventuring extreme sporting community or another, who have an entirely different perspective of safety, caution and a world outside themselves.
Despite how cold you feel you need to cook and eat as it will help warm you up
For sure.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: you are a terrific story-teller!!! Thank you for sharing your talent.
Thanks so much, as always, I truly appreciate it!
When you paused to consider what Davey was thinking, I was in complete agreement. The man was so naive about what he would encounter but even so might have made it if not for being shot. Your formidable storytelling abilities continue to grow. I would be interested to know if you see any common denominators in these stories and what lessons can be learned. I loved seeing your costars in the background.
That's a good future video, what all of these stories have in common.
I’ve recovered bodies of guys more capable than this guy
Amazing that people document this with no shame or embarrassment
Seems like that locator beacon would be strapped to one’s body. That may have been a good idea
when i cycled around the world in 2010-2013 i met a couple from England in Ethiopia that were cycling the same direction ...they were like this Davey guy if the locals said it was dangerous they ignored it if they said it was fine the were suspicious ...we crossed a no mans land from Ethiopia to Kenya and were warned not to stop for anyone that they kill people out there all the time....half way across they stopped to talk to a couple of guys on the road and were soon surrounded but many people telling them they had to go to the village and holding onto the bikes ..I pleaded with them to just push through and go they said it was fine ....I left them there and cycled away as fast as possible ...an hour later we met up again and they were so scared and apologized for not listening ...i did not feel bad about leaving them they put us all in danger because they would not listen to those who know!!
Sometimes I miss being young and bullet proof but this isn't one of those times 🤕

@@adventuresgonewrongThat's when you finally had to laugh. You're a kind soul, but it was still too much for you.
when someone says it's dangerous, then you go and it's not dangerous for you, it doesn't mean it's not dangerous. it means you just happened, by chance, to avoid said danger. It's always possible to go somewhere dangerous and just not encounter the danger. it doesn't mean it's not dangerous.
Incredible story. Being in remote, long-distance areas does put incredible stress on family members.
These stories are always so fascinating. There are so many things all these stories have in common, one of them being ignoring warnings from the locals. Imagine thinking to know better than the people who live there! If someone tells you that people are dying doing exactly what you’re doing, it’s probably more than people just being against you. It’s frustrating seeing him talk on the podcast, I don’t think he’s learned anything. Still just a kid
I mean, he did takes some advice from locals. But he could have been SO much more prepared.
He had been getting advice from locals for years that turned out to never reflect the level of danger on his actual adventure. Kind of hard not to reach a point where eventually you start to see people as overstating the danger of things.
You’re a great storyteller, thoroughly enjoyed this one. No sense speculating on who would commit such a random crime, but when you mentioned it was Shining Path territory, that’s the last type of thug I’d want to run into in that region.
Mollycoddled Davey gets in trouble in a place he is TOTALLY unprepared for... so complains on his rescuers that save him and calls mum who sorts him out. Privilige, thy name is Davey.
Yeah, that totally annoyed me. Arrogance and entitlement with money from stepdad. Gets other people in trouble and uses that for getting money.

Ive gone hiking before and personally know how long a single KM can feel in rough terrain so to hear that 6+KM hike being THE FIRST PART of Daveys adventure trully dumbfounded me...
It didnt get any better when he discribed his first night with NUMB TOES???? Bro wtf!
Im only 11 minutes in and already find myself shouting 'WTF' at the screen...
So far one Afrikaans word comes to mind and thats VERTRAAG, meaning insanity beyond reason thus impacting simple decision making skills.
Ill return after finishing the video, but so far my hopes are lower than our Rand value...

What if he was attacked by a large predator or a Crocodile or Pirahnas??
Im glad he survived his ordeal and hope other young impressionable youth can learn from his mistakes.
Thankyou for the story! This is my first ever hearing of Davey!
Haha I love this play-by-play!
What an optimist! So glad he had all those kind helpers and survived with his spirit intact
There's optimism and there's arrogance...I think he had more of the latter
Wow he is lucky to be alive, thankfully he came across really good people that helped him. Lovely to see your dogs in the background and all your hard work on the walls, really does look good x
Over confidence is a ridiculous understatement! This poor kid didn’t have a clue??!! What the heck Davey
Thank you for bringing us this amazing story. Davey's spiritual adventure was just as great as his actual physical adventure. I am so glad that he survived to tell about his experiences. Isn't it interesting that the doctors in Lima refused to treat him until they were assured of payment. I think we'd be shocked if something like that happened in the USA. I am amazed at the kindness and compassion shown by the villagers who found him. I wish it would be possible to go back and interview them to find out what they were thinking--why they helped him. I don't think I'd consider boating on the Amazon River even with an armed guard and 25 other people with me after hearing this story and Emma's story.
Yep I'm definitely never paddling the Amazon solo. And I really wonder what they say now over a decade later.
They'd probably say "if we knew how insufferable he'd turn out to be, we'd have just left him there"
It’s bizarre that people think their ego tourism is a worthwhile cause.
"ego tourism"👍
Thanks to our new and disgusting "attention-based economy" 🤮
Naivety seems to be a common theme with all of these adventures.
He didn’t think to bring a life jacket when kayaking the Amazon river?!? 🤦🏻♂️
Love your stories and presentations! Your voice is very pleasant. Thank you!! ☺️ 😊
Glad you like them!
I really like you as a narrator. Also, love the dogs.
Thx, as long as they don’t start licking their butts…😆
His second name is naive, right?
Greetings from Lima!
Imagine the villagers not having any urgency about his predicament? How dare they not recognise his privelige
hey give him a break on that. he was dying if he did not get help and that might make a person a bit grumpy.
100% most of us would be panicking and urging them to move faster. He really thought he wouldn't make it much longer.
@@desertmoons8 better that he not be so foolhardy then
What does privilege have to do with anything, anyone who’s dying would be like “act faster” you’re panicking and, again, literally dying 💀
There's nothing privileged about thinking that you are near death and need immediate help. Jesus christ, the dude got shot like three times and people are still calling him entitled for asking for help.
Love your pup in the background 🐶
I truly hope young Davey went back and thanked/repaid all the villagers who saved his life.
"No one knew the struggle David would experience"
LMAO they gon learn today
Love this video! Also the community response to a stranger is so heart warming.
Always great reporting, Thank You!
Thanks for watching!
Now he is a ted talker people like this love the praise and attention thats why they explore such scary adventures
Finally, an adventurer who puts his wife and kids first.
Hello from Wales 👋 It's 3am here, just awakened the woodburner, hot drink in hand, ready for your stories.
Ready for a nice, terrifying ride down the Amazon from the comfort of your home!
I try not to judge anyone adventurous, we've all made mistakes, especially in our younger day, but how you kept a straight face for most of this one I'll never know. 😳
I enjoyed your story very much. He took off totally not knowing what he was getting into. Not even a life jacket. He had an angel on his shoulder.
Thank you great story
Wow oh wow- you told this story so great! Thank you so very much!
Yessss……a longer video from you finally after a while ❤❤❤
Yes! Settle in and hunker down for the next 36 minutes. This one took a while!
Love your narration!
And now some compassion in my part. Poor guy. He survives his own idiocy and gets attacked by dastardly men. I feel bad for him. (My comments were posted during video pauses, not at the end).
He definitely made some really bad decisions, you’re not the first to get annoyed by his behaviour.
Hi ???What is your name? Thanks for the response. Yeah I do get irritated at the foolishness that arises when people get enamored about wilderness adventure. Though this guy was not doing anything stupid when he got shot. He had luckily made it through his stupid moves. I see he was speaking on Ted Talks. Probably getting paid. So does he present his experience as a bunch of foolish moves or is he capitalizing on his fortunate survival....and perpetuating the thrill of these activities for others to fall into the same trouble? ha ha . I wonder but I did not listen.
I wish I could work with you sometime on stuff like this. What part of the country are you from? I live at the foot of Mount Rainier. @@adventuresgonewrong
Being fair to the guy as well, half the travellers you come across will tell you that the world isn't anywhere half as dangerous as us sheltered Americans think it is. But then the other half will tell you you're an idiot if you go into places with gang or cartel activity.
Look tbh this was not in any way a “worthy cause”. I mean not even remotely. Why say that?
He admitted later that he was naive about that bit.
I think a lot of the time people who go on adventures/mountaineering like to convince themselves and others that it's not just curiosity about the natural world, thrill seeking or personal drive that takes them to these places but a 'good cause' (like asking for donations to a charity). But, overwhelmingly I've found, those donations are a drop in the ocean compared to the costs of the expedition itself.
There was a guy from Australia that died on Everest in 2023 and the whole narrative he told was that it was fundraising, but before his story was on the news, he'd only made about $2,000 in donations (from about 10 people, family and friends, I'd assume), even after his story was widespread, he'd still only made $8,000-ish. The cost of a Everest summit is approx $50-100,000. He could have just donated the money for the trip, but people want to do adventurous things (which can seem selfish), and esp if they have kids, I think they feel more comfortable pretending the trip is only about fundraising when it's really just about personal goals. I just wish people would be more honest and insightful, personal goals are fine, just don't pretend it's something more.
Whoo a longer video. Thank you! Really enjoy your content 😊
Glad you like the longer ones!
I'm here because my wife loves you and uses my tablet all the time. ❤ 🙏
Being exposed to LiveLeak as a child gave me great incentive to never want to go adventuring in any dangerous countries with high violent crime statistics. 🙂👍 blessings to the village people🙏 This guy annoyed me though with his carelessness !! Don't blame it on youth ... Maybe it's how he was raised to view the world...
Your talent at these kind of videos only gets better and better. May I offer a suggestion? A lot of times I'm not in the mood for an adventure story that ends tragically. Maybe someday you could start a second channel where you talk about adventures like this one -- a clueless amateur who somehow manages to survive. You could call it "What were they thinking?"
Same here, that's why I mix them up! Maybe one day in the future, but one channel is more than enough right now.
Love how you told this story!
This was a great video, I'd never heard of this story before.
“Can’t abide adventure. ‘Adventure’ is a word people use to put a shine on lack of preparation and surviving through dumb luck.”
