In May of 2001(I forget when, exactly) some family friends of ours were visiting for my oldest brother's graduation. I was 15 at the time. Anyway, we were chatting about the Minnesota Twins as the season had just started and our friends were from the Twin Cities area and also big Twins fans. Landon, one of the sons of the friends that were visiting at the time, was a decent baseball player and was a starter for his high school team for three years. Landon's team played a lot of other big schools in and around the Twin Cities. Anyway, Landon kept telling us about this catcher from Cretin-Durham HS that had never struck out, could throw out runners at second base from his knees, had an on base percentage that was obscene, and hit a home run in seven straight games. Never mind the fact that this same kid was also getting recruited to play quarterback because he was the NUMBER ONE college football prospect for the class of 2001. Landon kept going on and on....also saying that this kid was only person to ever be the Gatorade National Player of the Year in football AND baseball. "Seriously, no one is that good", I thought, Landon was basically telling us a bunch of Paul Bunyan stories.
Landon told us about playing against this kid, his name was "Joe M-something"; he couldn't remember the guy's last name. And then it clicked, he said it was Joe Mauer, the supposed stud that the Twins had just drafted. All I knew was that this Mauer guy was a decent player, but I didn't know anything about him.

I know it's 4 years ago at this point, but Joe Mauer got the sendoff that most of his fellow Twins greats deserved but never got. Hrbek's final season was interrupted by the strike and eventual lockout, Puckett's career ended by illness. Mauer got to end his career on the field. Harmon Killebrew's career ended in a sad whimper of a final season in Kansas City; Tony Oliva's playing days ended as a shell of his former self, strength eradicated by injury. Of the five Twins whose numbers adorn the gates of Target Field, only Rod Carew had as strong an end to his career, and his career finished with a six-year stint in Anaheim as a California Angel. Mauer was a Twin from his first game to his last.

Whether he decides to continue playing or ride off into the sun, Mauer has done the Twins proud.

Joe may not have been the heaviest hitter or the biggest producer, but I'll be damned if he wasn't a leader. Couldn't have asked for a classier guy to represent this organization. Forever and always, a Minnesota Twin. Thank you Joe.

One of the last "lunch pail" guys. Didnt have to have the best numbers, he was an anchor and always a solid player. Dodger fan here, you were one of the best Joe.

When he came out in the catchers gear I lost it. He was so damn good for a stretch of years there. Hats off to Joe!
