First Boat Goes Through NEW Alt Channel | Key Bridge Collapse

  • This is the first vessel to pass through a temporary alternate channel
    created by the Key Bridge Response Unified Command, near the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident, in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 1, 2024. The Crystal Coast is the first vessel to use the channel since the bridge collapsed into the federal waterway on March 26th. The tugboat Crystal Coast pushed a fuel barge through the temporary alternate channel.
    You can see the fallen remains of the continuous truss section of the Key bridge along with the Dali container ship in the background. This new alternate route is meant mainly for tugboats and barges since it is only 11 feet deep.

    Very cool! And by coincidence just today I read in a book why tugs push barges rather than pull them. I've lived on the Mississippi and now the Columbia and see barges all the time and never thought about it. It's because the water being pushed out the back of the tug by the engines would run into a barge it was pulling and make the barge harder to pull. This is avoided by pushing the barge out in front of the tug.

My friend broke her wrist, and was struggling to push her shopping cart with only one hand. It's a real challenge to steer one that way! I'm not sure where I got the idea, but I showed her that if she simply grabbed onto the front center of the cart with her good hand and pulled the cart, if followed right behind her. Since that day I have shared this 2 or 3 other times when I have seen people struggling to push a cart with one hand -- one was holding a baby; one had an arm in a cast -- and they were all very grateful. That will work with a tug and barge, but not the larger ships. If memory serves me, at least around ft. carroll island, the water gets shallow really quick. Not gonna see a container ship or anything that size getting through. Also the height of the bridge span won't permit larger boats through. But it nice to see this...

    The visible pier at then end of the remaining portin of the nort end of the bridge is NOT where the truss began. There were what appear to have been 3 more concrete box girder spans between that pier and the beginning of the truss. That's why, in the aerial views, there are what appear the be the stumps of 2 more pairs of piers between the end of the still-standing north end of the bridge, and the north end of the truss remains in the water. Those 3 box girder spans collapsed along with the truss, and brought down the piers supporting them.
    All box girder spans on the southern end of the bridge appear to have survived -- but not on the northern end.

    • @Rob2
      @Rob2 Месяц назад

      No, that is not correct. There were more iron truss sections up to this last standing pier. They collapsed when the main span collapsed. Check the original video of the collapse.

    • @johnl5235
      @johnl5235 Месяц назад

      @Rob2
      Go back and look at the original video again, from a source that does NOT crop it, such as ruclips.net/video/XeAEXNrdxBs/видео.html. You can see the far-north end of the truss near the right edge of the video. When the truss collapses, you can see it push down the piers supporting both that end of the truss and the southern end of the last non-truss span on the north. That collapse dropped 3 of the much shorter non-truss spans.
      In aerial views covering the entire scene following the collapse, you can see the northern truss section extending well above the water level, roughly the bottom half of the broken supports at what was the north end of the truss, then a gap with two more broken off supports where there were 3 more bridge sections where the bridge has completely disappeared. Those were NOT truss spans -- they appear to have been concrete box girder spans.

    When a ship loses propulsion suddenly, the bow goes further into the water and the boat turns in either direction. A ship needs steering speed and propeller water over the rudder to be able to steer. That was a large ship with very large mass in motion that needs a lot to stop or change course. Keep an eye out to see if they have dropped any anchors that they dragged on the bottom to stop and that may have affected how the boat turned. Greetings a sailor.

    Goodness, it looks precariously ominous, but I don't know anything about ship navigation. I did live there for several DECADES and have relocated to the Gulf Coast, where they have their own share of issues (not including SNOW!). However for the most part, the local people are a lot more friendly, IMO. I lived in Florida too but it was hard to find anybody local, AKA amenable!

    What is so amazing about reading some maps and laying out some channel markers?

    I don't think the truss started right after the span over the new channel. Didn't a section or two of the girder spans fail on one side?

    Well, those barges are probably the only ships that will be able to leave the harbor for a long time.

    They literally didn’t have to do anything physically when it comes to opening that up. All they had to do was change the security zone. I’ve crabbed and fished under the Key Bridge for over 25 years. It’s deep enough for commercial maritime vehicles that needs less than a 12’ draft to thru. To give a comparison, the channel is 50’ and the Dalis draft is like 40’ to 42’ draft. Of course the draft changes depending on the tidal movement.

    How did no one learn from the 1990 Florida bridge collision and in 1975, Hobart Tasmania? Putting guard rails around the support beams.

    Shallow-running vessels, for sure. I wonder how a container ship would do? Maybe they can load them lighter and make a go of it that way.

    Is there a limit to the size of ship that can go through there? Is the water deep enough for a ship the size of the one that hit the bridge?

    Not to take away from your video jeffostroff - but nothing fantastic has happened.
    It has merely been determine by survey that there are no underwater obstruction under the bridge spans that did not collapse. Just what is the usable draft of navigation?
