Steph Curry - Superb Separation (Don't Switch)

  • Steph Curry was the most lethal offensive weapon in the entire league during the regular season. There’s a reason he’s the first unanimous Most Valuable Player. In addition, he’s a back-to-back MVP (first guard since Steve Nash), the scoring champion, and the only member of the 50-40-90 club to lead the league in scoring during the same year. He’s an advanced stats freak (Player efficiency rating (PER) of 31.5), an NBA champion, and a general waking nightmare for NBA defenses. This is a guy who is so dangerous that he even made two defenders run into each other (5:17). This video is about how he kills cross-matches, over aggressive defenders, and switching on the pick and roll.
    The MVP already puts so much pressure on defenses, that you don’t need to make life difficult by cross-matching wrong, especially in transition. Cross-matching is the term for when you have to defend someone different from whoever is guarding you. The Warriors generate so many of their buckets in transition, or even the secondary break, so make sure you get as many people back behind the ball as you can. Once that’s done, get the best (most athletic and/or agile) defender to grab Steph. Don’t leave your big alone on Steph island, waiting for his ankle insurance to kick in.
    After that, in the half court, there’s a lot of clever action the Warriors run to get in their spots, but Steph in a pick and roll is at the heart of most of it. The first option of defending Steph Curry receiving a ball screen is to blitz him high, and force him to give it up. The Cavs did this in the 2015 Finals, but making the Warriors play 4 on 3 with an elite decision maker like Draymond, already on the short roll, is not a recipe for success. That is not featured at all in this video, because that isn’t what this is about.
    The second option should NEVER be explored: there will never ever be a time to go under a screen for Steph Curry. I don’t care if he can’t hit a shot, and is about to put in cryostatis, you should never go under that screen.
    The next option is to show, but don’t switch. That’s when the big comes out to bump the ball handler, or at least disrupt the driving angle, as the guard fights over the screen to get back into position. That’s a pretty sound strategy, except Steph’s playmaking ability is world class, and his release is lighting quick, so he might be able to get his shot off before the big can even get out there.
    Finally, if you do contain Steph, STAY DISCIPLINED. He is relentless with his movement, and as soon as he gives the ball, he might get it back right away. If you relax for even a second, a give-and-go or a backdoor cut will make you look foolish. The Warriors are a combined 140-24 in the last two regular seasons for a reason.
    All clips are from this current (2015-2016) season. There will be a DON'T SWITCH playoff version when the Finals finish.

    • @connerfelty635
      @connerfelty635 8 лет назад +21

      because he's not the best overall point guard . he's the best shooter , that's it
      he doesn't top anyone else in any category
      kyrie - best finisher at the rim (probably top 3 all time) , best handles in the league (again probably also top 3 of all time)
      john wall - insanely athletic , 2nd fastest player in the league,
      russell - most athletic point guard in the league, fastest in the league , can make contested layups (which curry can't really do)
      overall , i would think kyrie is the best point guard in the league . he played great defense in the finals which will only carry on into the regular 2017 season .

    • @PhillyFly1039

    • @godfrey6133
      @godfrey6133 8 лет назад +22

      Curry also a great finisher you know. Westbrook can make inconsistent contested layups due to his lack of decision making which doesn't benefits the team. Although he has a good 3pt shooting and clutch Kyrie's finishes is due to his great handles and he got only 4.7 assist in the past season so not realy Lebron runs the cavs plays and defense

    • @godfrey6133

    The shots at 5:55 and 9:21 are just bananas. The difficulty of shooting at those angles coupled simultaneously with moving towards his weak side are two of the most difficult shots for any shooter but Steph makes it look effortless. His footwork, handles and basketball IQ are impeccable as well. With his shooting range and accuracy you have to face guard Steph with multiple players at least 3/4 court the entire game.

      Stanley Livingstone no. Watch a superb separation video on either harden and kyrie. They use those moves as set up moves to shift defenders. Same as Curry in some of these clips. Curry use sometimes 2-3 moves to rock the defense then explode or get his shot off. There’s hard defenders in this league, those 3 guards depend on their handle to get to their spots. He wasnt injured
      1. He dropped 40. Bandwagoners keep making excuses on this but he fucking dropped 40 and said I'm back. This alone removes the excuse of injury.
      2. He dropped 38 in g4. He did have one game performing well in the finals and that was game 4. If he did it in game 4, why not g7, 6 and 5? Because he was choking
      3. He cameback against OKC and helped lead the comeback. He had big moments in the comeback and if he was really injured he would have lost against OKC.
      4. In some of the finals games you would see him playing around and doing stupid ass shit. Taking overly-contested 3's, missing wide-open shots, doing behind the back passes and getting turnovers, over-dribbling and getting ripped. Tell me, does injury have anything to do with this shit? No, he got exposed and destroyed.

      Askar Turebekov because he's trying to get at least one in and when he gets at least one, that starts to give him motivation that he'll get the next one. And he wasn't just shooting 3's all night, it's a 48 min game. There were plenty of times he was driving or shooting from the paint.

      Kobe Bryant shot with like 5 people draped all over him hands in his face with an awkward shot and he would still hit it. Curry makes deep 3's and occasional 1v1 contested deep 3's which everyone orgasms over.

      Kobe also shot 38% from 3 for his beast season in his entire career taking only 4 3's a game that season... His career average was 33% from the 3 point line. Steph has never come close to dipping even below 40% from 3 in a season. Also, Kobe's clutch percentage (FG% in the last couple minutes) is pretty abysmally low over the past decade- go look up some stat metrics before you come here pulling out anecdotal bullshit.

    It's so obvious he wasn't 100 percent in the finals when you watch regular season footage of Curry. His ball handling wasn't there let alone his movement. Warriors got lucky last year and the Cavs got lucky this year. Anyone who tries to argue otherwise is just biased.

    • @jr5296
      @jr5296 8 лет назад +3

      He and Warriors said he was okay. No one plays at 100%. Especially in the playoffs. Stop making excuses. It's like saying Cavs would of won last year if Irving and Love were healthy. It's not luck either year. PATHETIC.

    • @petermcdonald6299
      @petermcdonald6299 8 лет назад +4

      Yes, Cavs definitely could've won last year if they didn't suffer 2 of the big 3 getting injured. It may sound like an excuse but it's a valid one. Losing Love and Irving last year definitely gave the Warriors an advantage. Curry getting injured earlier in the playoffs, plus Green suspension, plus Bogut injury and Iguodala clearly having back problems gave Cavs an advantage. As for him and the warriors saying "He was okay." What would they do just advertise it and say, "Yeah, Steph is not at 100%. His knee is really bothering him." In no sport can you just show your weakness. My point is Curry was definitely not the same player in the finals or even the playoffs as he was in the regular season. He was extremely inconsistent. Blew up in that Portland game where he yelled, "I'm back" but then wasn't so hot during Oklahoma except for a couple of games. Why do you even think they were down 3-1 at one point? "PATHETIC?" Right...
