Someone had the hot take of a roller rink chase scene and I like that idea so imagine this: You’re the unfortunate victim of a notoriously charismatic serial killer as you run into a roller rink that looks like its been there for decades. Little do you know that you’ve stepped right into the killer’s domain, this song starts to echo through the speakers, distorted by age. The killer calmly makes their way over to the rink that you’ve found yourself in the center of, squaring up with a devious smile on their face. I imagine them looking something similar to young Papa Nihil with his 60’s aesthetic mixed with satanic influences. As the song picks up to the first chorus, you two start into a macabre dance. The killer takes slashes at you with some nicking your skin and others leaving deep lacerations. You use any furniture and objects at your disposal to block them, but they’re almost inhuman in their power and force. All the while they hum along to the song, perhaps even dancing a little when they feel so inclined. You feel yourself become encumbered by your wounds and all that running as the bridge begins, a lull in the high energy that almost puts you at ease. The meanings I've seen are all so interesting. If i was to pin it down as one, it sounds more like its about sex than anything, but it doesn't mean it isnt about weed either! This song makes me feel like the bittersweet nostalgia and reflection of remembering fond memories while knowing they are over, and feeling a total summation of the positive and negative experiences that is neutral, feeling at peace and content with everything that has happened.
I know what the real meaning is now, BUT!! When I first heard this song I thought that it was about this guy and someone he liked who was very depressed, who he witnessed *jump* (in the dark way). And that this song took place in the moment that they fell, as his thoughts swarmed and went through denial, depression and bargaining, while also trying to explain to himself what could've lead to this, "we were speeding together", as in, 'we were fine, what happened??' "but besides the stardom all we got was *blues*, but through all the *sorrow*, we were riding high" as in he knew the whole that they were depressed, but he's still questioning reality as even though they were depressed, everything seemed fine, it didn't seem like they were going to jump. For the third and seventh verse I think it's just saying that they've been together for a while and that they've been through everything together in all of their up's and downs. "And the truth of the matter is I'll never let you go" I think in part this means that he can't accept that this is happening, but also I think it partially means that even after they're gone, he's still going to love them, he's still going to hold onto them in his mind. "You go down just like Holy Mary, Mary on a cross" they're falling, and it's the most haunting image he's ever seen, and I especially thought this because in reality we know that it's Jesus who dies on the cross, not his mom, so I thought it meant it was a haunting death that feels like 'no, this shouldn't be happening, this is all wrong'. "Not just another Bloody Mary" I do like how this line means 'you're not just anybody to me, you're everything' but the fact that he makes the comparison to Bloody Mary is what gets me. It's like he's adding on the fact that he's acutely aware of the person's darker side, the side that brought them to this point, but to him it's like saying 'you're not just another death, or pity case, or lost cause, you're more than that, you mean something to me' "Your beauty never really scared me" more than just 'oh you're beautiful and I'm intimidated by that' I think this means that he recognizes that the darker parts of the person will never go away. And, because they're a permanent part of them, they're something to make others afraid and concerned, but now this is him saying 'I never saw you differently, they're a part of your beauty, and that doesn't deter me' "If you chose to run away with me, I will tickle you internally," personally I thought that this meant 'if you survive this and chose to be with me afterwards, I will do everything I can to make you happy' because I thought that 'tickling internally' meant laughter and joy "and I see nothing wrong with that" as far as this line goes, I think that it means that he's been trying to make them happy this whole time, and a part of him is angry that that wasn't enough, that they would jump, and that he's almost questioning them 'what's wrong with us just being happy?' i see it in a similar way where its two star crossed lovers, the singer is speaking of a pure and loving woman, but she had to sacrifice herself/ the relationship to save him. he's reminicing throught the highs and lows they had, "you goes down just like holy mary" is her sacrifcing herself for the good of him. "not just another bloody mary" is him refusing to see her as dead to him even if the relationship ended badly. "if you choose to run away with me i'll tickle you internally" is him telling her if she chose to come back to him he'll make her happy.
uhh.. i found this part 3:15 - 3:52 the part where "Your beauty never ever scared me".. i found this mangga where there was a monster/demon (Cavo) and all he wanted was be loved, every one runs away from him (even demons like him ran away because he's ugly..), he lived or devour his life in loneliness and darkness until he meet this middle aged guy(Liam) and not afraid of him. Now It's his first time having a normal conversation with a human. When I first heard this song I thought that it was about this guy and someone he liked who was very depressed, who he witnessed *jump* (in the dark way). And that this song took place in the moment that they fell, as his thoughts swarmed and went through denial, depression and bargaining, while also trying to explain to himself what could've lead to this, "we were speeding together", as in, 'we were fine, what happened??'
"but besides the stardom all we got was *blues*, but through all the *sorrow*, we were riding high" as in he knew the whole that they were depressed, but he's still questioning reality as even though they were depressed, everything seemed fine, it didn't seem like they were going to jump.
For the third and seventh verse I think it's just saying that they've been together for a while and that they've been through everything together in all of their up's and downs.
"And the truth of the matter is I'll never let you go" I think in part this means that he can't accept that this is happening, but also I think it partially means that even after they're gone, he's still going to love them, he's still going to hold onto them in his mind.
"You go down just like Holy Mary, Mary on a cross" they're falling, and it's the most haunting image he's ever seen, and I especially thought this because in reality we know that it's Jesus who dies on the cross, not his mom, so I thought it meant it was a haunting death that feels like 'no, this shouldn't be happening, this is all wrong'.
"Not just another Bloody Mary" I do like how this line means 'you're not just anybody to me, you're everything' but the fact that he makes the comparison to Bloody Mary is what gets me. It's like he's adding on the fact that he's acutely aware of the person's darker side, the side that brought them to this point, but to him it's like saying 'you're not just another death, or pity case, or lost cause, you're more than that, you mean something to me'
"Your beauty never really scared me" more than just 'oh you're beautiful and I'm intimidated by that' I think this means that he recognizes that the darker parts of the person will never go away. And, because they're a permanent part of them, they're something to make others afraid and concerned, but now this is him saying 'I never saw you differently, they're a part of your beauty, and that doesn't deter me'
"If you chose to run away with me, I will tickle you internally," personally I thought that this meant 'if you survive this and chose to be with me afterwards, I will do everything I can to make you happy' because I thought that 'tickling internally' meant laughter and joy
"and I see nothing wrong with that" as far as this line goes, I think that it means that he's been trying to make them happy this whole time, and a part of him is angry that that wasn't enough, that they would jump, and that he's almost questioning them 'what's wrong with us just being happy?'
Again, all what I thought before I found out what the real meaning was, and I still think of it this way just 'cause I think it's more interesting, and it makes the song feel hauntingly beautiful instead of just "Haha sex, what a blasphemous song"

As far as I know though there is no interviews or anything where he states that this is the meaning, but it seems to be the general consensus online. Hope this helps!

i see it in a similar way where its two star crossed lovers, the singer is speaking of a pure and loving woman, but she had to sacrifice herself/ the relationship to save him. he's reminicing throught the highs and lows they had, "you goes down just like holy mary" is her sacrifcing herself for the good of him. "not just another bloody mary" is him refusing to see her as dead to him even if the relationship ended badly. "if you choose to run away with me i'll tickle you internally" is him telling her if she chose to come back to him he'll make her happy.
