The Ibanez naming convention is pretty simple once you're used to it. In RG631, RG = series, 6 = "quality" level (with 4 being RG standard series), 3 = HH pickguard model (1 being H and 2 being HH), 1 = fixed bridge (0 being tremolo). The letters after the standard model number are usually finish options.
It took me many years to try an Ibanez but when I did I never looked back. I now own 6 RG models, including 4 Japanese guitars and an Axion RG631 like yours. It's a great guitar for down tuning and that paint job is amazing. The Japanese genesis models are the real bargains, but they are proper shredder's guitars with super thin necks. The Prestige models are also great value second hand and are just about the best guitars on the market.
The RG is my favorite guitar of all time. I have a Standard, Prestige and one of the MIJ Genesis series in jewel blue and I love them all. IMHO the most versatile guitars out there.
The Ibanez RG is like the most attractive super strat body shape imo. The RG 2620 is an all gloss black, super mean looking RG with sick inlays that actually fetches a pretty penny because of how badass it looks. Ibanez is shooting them selves in the foot by not remaking it.
I bought an Ibanez RG652AHMFX Prestige in the spring of 2022. It's the first guitar I ever bought that was absolutely flawless. I've never really lusted after Ibanez guitars but I felt like this one was just waiting for me. I tried it out and I couldn't leave it behind. For just over $2000 CAD it was a bargain. Dimarzio pickups, locking tuners, Graph Tech nut, Ash body, 5 piece maple/walnut neck, birds eye maple fretboard, Gibraltar II bridge, a stunning finish. Ibanez puts out a great product. That Axion guitar sounded really good. For a $1000 USD it's a steal. And I also thought it sounded best through the Rectifier. 🤘
I wish they made this one with one of their trems! I own a 7 string RGA from the same line and I love it, this really gives me both modern vibes with the finish but also the OG retro RG vibes with the pickguard :)
@@Apollo-Saturn I wish Ibanez would move the volume knob a half inch farther away from the bridge. I really love their guitars otherwise. But I'm not changing my playing style.
RGs are my favorite super strat. I have a rg5320 prestige... Fn hell do i love it. The wider string spacing is nothing one can't get used to, but it also allows you play like you normally couldn't in the higher frets. They're built for speed and comfort.
Finally someone who likes thicker necks as well 🙂 This color is stunning! I've been looking these kind of colors since the late 90s (Standox Indianapolis Green) and really don't know, why guitor manufacturers don't use these more...
Just reminds me of Rocky George from Suicidal Tendencies and his RG750's.. in the day with rectifier that tone was huge.. and whomever touches an Ibanez neck falls in love.. thanks for looking at these Kyle..
Glad you did an Ibanez video! I play only Ibanez RGD Prestige series. I urge you to try an Ibanez RGD, since their 26.5" scale neck holds D Standard and Drop C really well, and allows you to use normal strings in those lower tunings. Great video, Kyle!
That's a really cool-looking guitar! Glad you're experimenting with lower tunings lately. Lots of misconceptions regarding the Fishmans, LOL. But it's not like you HAVE to love them either. Cool demo as always!
Dude, Kyle... After going through about 10 different OD's, i just bought a MXR badass custom modified and while it took me a little bit to get it just right, i have absolutely fallen in love with it... Thank you for that recommendation!! 🤘
Put that coil tap in single, put the blade switch in the center position, use a little chorus with some light reverb, and get ready to hear the best clean sound that guitar can deliver.
It’s great to see such an in depth review of this guitar! I’ve had it for a copule of years now and I’m totally in love. I use it everyday for downtuned stuff (mainly drop C) and it sounds awesome. There are certainly a few aspects I would improve for a guitar in this price range, not only the nut but also the pickguard is on the cheaper side and the binding on mine has a few tool markings. Other than this the playability is great, I love the panga panga neck and the pickups. Mine doesn’t have coil split though, I believe they added this feature later on which is quite a bummer. Great video as usual!
Only thing I don't like about this guitar is they use the pickguard from the trem models so it has a old shaped rebate cut out of the pickgaurd at the bridge
After that they seem to kinda poop out. And ya get this bouncing rubber ball sound to your palm mutes from something. I honestly think it’s there built in silencer thing to stop string ring it cuts out to fast it’s like a gate closing real quick ya get that swoosh bounce sound
Good to know, I have had a hell of a time getting along with the wizard necks and have passed on a number of rg's because of it. Has a JS model years ago that I loved and was very disappointed that they didn't put that neck on anything else
I have 3 ibanez RGIRs and they fucking rock. the bridge is nice, any japanese guitar I think will be flawless. I also got an FGN Mythic and that is my new main. good stuff over there!
I've also had my eye on this one for a couple of years. The one thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger is the lack of stainless fret wire. I just don't want to buy any more guitars without stainless frets. I have to say that neck is sexy af. I love necks that use dark and exotic looking woods.
Nice .. I've been a fan of Ibanez for some time now ... I just traded away my low-mid level Ibanez 7 string & a Blackstar HT5-R head for a Peavey 6505 MH head & plugged my Ibanez S470 I modded into it & sounds great !! So congrats on checking out that nice one !! :)
Good video, and remember to make sure the Ibby will intonate. On lesser quality instruments, I’ve seen (only too late) bridges which were located too far back on the body, and out of adjustable range.
Well i have RG421EX left handed version...very good playability on that, looking for RG550 Lefty version in future if they are still in marked cos nothin says 80's baby like bright yellow colored ibanez😅
I've always heard that nyato and nato are woods that are similar enough to mahogany just more plentiful and cheaper, and that most budget guitars that claim to be "mahogany" are actually nyatoh or nato.
I’m an Ibanez guy man, and ya man, once you get a good one, it’s hard to go back. Especially if you get a prestige. But ya man, glad to see an iby on your channel. But ya man once you set it up, how you like it will come alive. I’m trying to get Jason to get a iby. Lol! He’s played a few of mine and I think he’s starting to dig em
The Wolfgang special puts that in the dirt. price wise and quality and playability. Hits all 3 marks. EVH guitars, amps, and effects. Hits all 3 marks. Reliability also. 4 marks.
The only thing about trying Drop C in videos like this is that the pickups are still hearing Drop D from the strings. How it sounds in Drop C is really the drop pedal doing the work into how the amp reacts. Just wanted to point out that out. If you really want to hear how the Fishman pickups handle a lower tuning, you need to change the actual tuning of the guitar strings. 🤘
Definitely a new look for ya. I always picture you with your Schecter E1 or Balaguer Typhon. I think it's good to at least give it a try.
