When I was young, I asked my dad why the 'King of Russia was looking so sad in all the pictures." (I was convinced everyone had a king and queen. I was also convinced that King George Bush was married to Queen Libby, that had the famous the statue with the crown. I wondered why she was always hiding in the big house, because we never saw her. Later it turned out that Lady Liberty is not the Queen.)
My dad tried to explain to me that Putin was insecure about being a small guy, that he always rode the 'smallest steppingscooter when growing up" and that now he was older, he wanted everyone to know that he was no longer that little boy.
That's why he took his shirt off on a horse, why he drove around in big cars and why he nééded extra countries added to his already-massive-country of Russia.
I asked if adding those countries would be enough to finally make him happy. My dad said; 'No, because in his mind, he still feels like that little boy, with the smallest steppingscooter. He doesn't care about extra land, he wants to show off."
Later, my dad pointed at a guy outside, wearing sunglasses, grease in his hair, a massive rolex on his arm and an orange car. He said; 'Do you see what he's doing?'
I said; 'Yeah his car is broken' and my dad said; 'No, he's pressing the gas and break at the same time. He's making noise, asking for attention. He has a bright-orange car, he has a big golden watch, he is trying to show off. He probably also had a small steppingscooter when he grew up." My dad also casually added that those people are usually not the nicest to be with, in a relationship.
So now, whenever I see (a man overcompensating and) Putin, I just see a little, sad boy, crying about his little steppingscooter, afraid of being ignored by the world and demanding to get more land, to show that he's a big boy now.

as a russian who stays in russia, i want to say two things:
    1. russian propaganda doesn't need anyone to believe this ridiculous shit they say, it's a message of "i can say it, you can't do anything about it and if you'd try and fight against it we'll make you shut up". second purpose is to confuse you. something happens and there's ten versions immediately one more ridiculous than another, they want you to be anxious, they want you to fear, they want you to not know what to do. they want those feelings to paralyze you, so you don't do anything.
    2. i want all the people to know not to watch Russia Today ever. this is a propaganda resource, created to get you to sympathise with russia, to agree with shit they say. don't watch it yourself, set parental control on your relatives devices to block it.
    3. if you are curious about the state of russian politics, watch Ekaterina Shulman interviews, she's a politologist specialized in russian politics and a very intelligent educated woman.

And that we wish Russian people the best, just like we wish Ukrainians the best. And one is stuck in a shit situation and the other is fleeing from a horrible situation and neither should suffer.

    The Ten Stages of Genocide
1.) Classification: people begin to be divided into “us and them”.
2.) Symbolization: people are forced to identify themselves.
3.) Discrimination: people begin to be openly singled out for differential treatment at various levels of society especially in schools of learning.
4.) Dehumanization: people are increasingly equated with animal vermin, rats, cockroaches, ect.
5.) Organization: government is gradually used to create covert para-organizations to enforce policy against those that are being dehumanized.
6.) Polarization: government and it’s state-run media begin to broadcast propaganda or nuance information into half-truth to turn the populace against the undesired groups.
7.) Preparation: official action is taken to begin removing the dehumanized “vermin”.
8.) Persecution: widespread murdering, property theft, corrupted justice systems, fake trials, and massacres begin and given tacit approval.
9.) Extermination: wholesale elimination of undesirables and groups begins without conscience. It is called extermination because they’re not considered human.
10.) Denial: the government and conspiring populace deny and believe they’ve done nothing wrong.

Queer dehumanization is how I got in and out of the propaganda cycle. I'm a Russian, a fairly young one too, soon 19, but now 18. A few years back, about 5 or 6, I was getting into politics, however young I was. The political content was exposed to me and I understood it more at that age, so it makes sense. There were a lot of short movies, supposedly explaining that being homosexual or transgender is morally wrong. The videos often featured smearing the people, associating LGBT with a purely "western" [the term here is vague, but in Russia it usually refers to North American countries, and Europe] movement, which fortified angst against "the west" and used the existing angst against "the west" against LGBT people. As a 12 year old though, I ate it up, and I was progressively becoming conservative (ironic word combination), and moving in a direction Russian government favors. At 12 however I also started visiting more English websites, I barely spoke English, but I learned it that way. I needed to know English for my programming interest. To my surprise I saw a lot of queer people. And for some reason it bothered me. The emotional link made by the propaganda videos and real life has significantly affected me, and I imagined queer people exactly as portrayed in the propaganda video. That probably went on until 14. Where I didn't just use RUclips or some mostly non interactive social media in anglosphere. I created a discord account at 14 and joined a server of a programming creator I loved. I interacted with a lot of people, and I mean a lot. As days went, I found out a chunk of active members were queer, I also was in many other servers where I met other people, but beside the point. My feelings were obviously conflicted, they didn't interact like the propaganda video entailed it. So many of them were average Joe's and Jane's. And even if they fit some stereotype that the propaganda video addressed, it didn't change the fact that they were, overall, just like everyone else. As time went on and closer to being 16 I interacted with many divergent people. And my unreasonable compulsion against queer people completely faded away. But more importantly my suspicion to propaganda grew. I noticed how much of it was not trying to make an argument, but an impression. An impression where a superficial factor, say, colored hair, is somehow portrayed in a bad light. In USA, a similar thing with conservatives and the "red pill" movement. I managed to briefly skip it because I realized how much parallels there is with the Russian government just as well. So this one incident, for me, completely crumbled any trust to Russian propaganda. And consecutively - to many other conservative media.
Fast forward to today, and im dating a trans girl. She is one of the sweetest, most understanding and boundary respecting people I've seen. And if you were an outsider, just someone from public, you wouldn't be able to tell she's trans at all. 12 year old me wouldn't have predicted that. Love ✌️.

I'm from Poland, just near eastern border. We have so many Ukrainian refugees living with us all this year, children going to schools with our kids, adults working - you go buy a coffee and you ask a lady at the shop about attack in Lviv last night where her husband and son live. Our full-of-fear-Polish-peace new normal. We are safe but our brothers and sisters in Ukraine are not.

Accountability and the general Indian public never go together. Remember, I said the general population, a few people do think critically but they are few and far between.
So it becomes a cycle where " my country can do no wrong " is considered the most praiseworthy statement. Similarly the deep insecurities that plague society makes them lash out against the west and claim how our culture is " superior ".

Hi Roman. I was in Ukraine in 2011 and I met many Nazis, particularly in L'viv. I went to the bar in central L'viv where they do the Hitler salute as you enter, that's just below a restaurant that mocks Jews. Streets nearby had been named after the Ukrainians who carried out the Holocaust and massacres of Russians, Poles, Belorussians etc.
It may very well be true that there are elements of fascism in Russia's government, but can I ask what you think of Ukraine's full blown absorption of Nazi ideology into it's national identity after the break up of the USSR? Can I ask what you think that people who were victims of Nazis, like my late friend who was rounded up by the UPA in 1941 should think of your country and it's behaviour in light of this?

Putin has been in power in Russia for over 23 years. All of Putin's prominent critics have been killed, imprisoned, or left the country. Putin has declared war and is taking over the territories of a neighboring state. Hundreds of thousands of people have died in this war. Most Russians support this. These are not elements of fascism in Russia's government. This is full-fledged fascism, which is getting more and more aggressive. But that doesn't bother you at all. You're too busy making up stories about the existence of the Nazi bar in Lviv and the UPA in 1941.

I remember in the spring of 2003 watching the beginning of the Iraq invasion and feeling in the pit of my stomach that my country was doing something horrible. I'm no brainiac, but I was one of the (apparently few?) Americans who felt the evidence presented to justify the invasion was suspect. It bothered me a lot and I wasn't happy to be proven right in the end.

I don't want to ascribe political positions, but I felt your critique on the modertly affluent liberal quietly giving permission to conservative/fascist to continue their agenda, was really well made. The mentality of "Sure I might be a minority, or 'middle class', but I get to enjoy my creature comforts and pay myself out of adversity, so why should I jeopardize that position?". It rings very close to what Martin Luther King jr's criticism against the moderate whites wanting to handle social reform on their "convenient timetable" which in reality means never. I feel like it drove that point of why Russians who might not necessarily agree with the war, or even necessarily buy into the propaganda, still choose to sit by idly. На жал я плохо говорю по Русский. Спасибо большое, Аня, за видео.
I saw some of the response to the Bucha massacre on r/russia. You can still find the post. The poster says that the bodies were planted there or shot by the Ukrainians because the victims were wearing white armbands (used to indicate noncombatant status) and Russian soldiers NEVER shoot people wearing white armbands.
I spent a few hours at the bus station in Tallinn last summer. It was the middle of the night while I waited for the first bus to Pärnu. Under normal circumstances you can't get in, but buses of Ukrainian refugees sometimes arrive from St Petersburg. None came that night, but they have a small team of volunteers to help them upon arrival.
Since neither of us had anything to do, I spoke to one of them, a Russian man from Novgorod region, who'd lived in Estonia since 2021. He told me about his parents back home, how they were plugged into the TV, how he told them about the atrocities Russia was committing, and how they always deny, rationalise, and in the end say, "Well, we may never know. Our media says this, your media says that."
I just feel so despondent. Even if перемога came tomorrow the damage Russia has done to Ukraine is terrible, and Russian society has been set up to do this again, whether it's in Ukraine or somewhere else. So many Russians are either in denial, or disengaged from any kind of politics, whilst they have a fascist government, and a sizeable portion of Russians feel that their government is aggressive or cruel enough.

Thanks Anya. I would add that Putin played on older fears to take control of Russian society: fear of the West, as the arch-enemy ready to nuke USSR anytime; and fear of Yeltsin's years, when Western expertise in finance compounded the collapse of Russian economy and ended in a nightmare of social anarchy. So making the West the cause of any wrong and posing as the shelter against chaos ring an existing bell in middle-aged and older people mind.

@@jamesrowlands8971 They share the feeling of past prosperity and greatness destroyed by Western powers, including USA: China destroyed by opium and foreign implantations, South America post World Wars prosperity destroyed by support to military dictators, Osmanli muslim world ripped apart in 19th and 18th century, India dominance of the world exchange from 8th to 17th century destroyed by European colonialism. Russia power was destroyed twice, in post-WW1 revolution and again in the 1990s when nobody helped Russia after the fall of USSR. It's partly delusional, but the active role of Westerners in reshaping the world trade and foreign society is part of their history books.
Another feeling is that today balance of power and economical exchange are too favorable to Western world. And that weakening this western world could be somehow beneficial. Europe deprived of energy will have a weaker economy and currency and will have to sell its technology at bargain price. Russia deprived of Western technology has to trade its natural resources with China and India at bargain price. Once again, it's a fallacy, you dont' benefit of the difficulties of the others, as the Russia crisis of the 90s clearly shows. But it is a line of thinking which is gaining strength now that the collective resolution of crisis, once provided by UNO and balance of terror, is other with the collapse of USSR. Minor powers bet on "strong leaders" to get regional dominance or challence world dominance: Turkey, Iran, Russia, India, China.

Strangely enough the third world isn't stupid, they realize that if Russia is allowed to set the precedent that powerful countries can just invade their neighbors without repercussions then they might be next on the chopping board. I mean the justifications Putin used for the Russian invasion could easily be used by France or the UK to justify invading most of Africa.

This is only because Lukashenko laid under Putin and basically is the one all doing the Russian ruling. Ukrainian presidents were less pro-Russian, but some of them were (Poroshenko), but to be fair, Ukrainians DID have more presidents than Belarus, since the establishment of our country in 1991, we only had 1 president who is a bloody murderer. But still, we of course have a better situation here as we do not suffer from the war, maybe a civil one of some sorts, but I wouldn't call it a "war". And yes, a lot of Belarusian men DO fight for Ukraine and die for them.

These topics are too important for the ambiguity of hiding them behind bleeps and blurs. If you keep up this level of quality content I'm confident that your Patreon will grow to offset any demonetization.

My wife is Russian and we live in Santa Barbara California. Our daughter will no longer even admit she is half Russian. I am half Czechoslovakian and half a hodgepodge of British nationalities. So our daughter says she is British and Czech. She understands and speaks Russian, but refuses to speak it or answer to it outside our home. My wife is heart broken because she sees her daughter completely rejecting my wife’s roots. I try my best to help keep some of the Russian traditions alive by frequently cooking Russia dishes, celebrating Russian holidays, and insisting she use Russian with her mother and grandmother at least at home.

I can understand your daughter's reasoning. Good for her! She'll always be able to come back to the language and culture when she feels comfortable to do so.
Your daughter is expressing and processing her emotions and doing the only thing she knows how to do to cope with the injustice and helplessness she feels about Ukraine. That means you raised a morally aware and empathetic individual. You should be proud.
I get why your wife is sad, but to be honest, no matter how misguided you guys think it is for her to take her frustrations out in this manner, it would be a shame for you guys to miss out on the fact that your daughter as a young person is showing her own form of integrity and is becoming an adult, and is learning to stand up for her own beliefs. I think this is actually something to be celebrated and nurtured.
I think what she needs most now is your understanding and your support. If she feels you guys truly understand why she's doing this, it will only strengthen your bond even if she still continues to reject her Russian heritage for the time being.
Just my two cents but I'd give up any of my own ethic/linguistic heritage if it meant letting my daughter feel seen, heard, and understood by me. That bond is the bigger picture.

@@racoonfrenzy3617 Thanks. I am not upset with my daughter at all. It is just sad that something she was proud of just over a year ago has become an embarrassment for her because of actions by others. I tell her to just be thankful her mother saw fit to immigrate to the US almost thirty years ago. My wife and her mother are worried all the time for friends and family in Russia. Several friends have long histories of protesting against Putin. We tried to talk some of them into immigrating to the US back when they came to visit, but they all had other friends and family back home and they still had hope for Russia.
My wife now helps Russian and Ukrainian refugees navigate the complex US immigration system without speaking English. My daughter helps the daughter of one of the immigrant families who now goes to her high school. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has dramatically changed our lives.
