rest in peace Jan Maxwell. I saw you so many times and didn't wish to disturb your train of thought as you were running to rehearsal. The last time I saw she mouthed to me thank you. Same to you Jan. Glad to have seen your performance
Good to see this. The day I saw this revival was the day Jan Maxwell was hit by a taxi!!! So her understudy went on....poor Jan. An incredible performer. The understudy looked noticeably nervous and a little unsteady but she got through it.
so sorry to see that she passed away and glad we have video of her tremendous talent. This was a wonderful production with a stellar cast, but Ms. Maxwell stole the show. She will be missed but her star will shine eternal as long as this is posted.
I got to see this production on Broadway and Jan Maxwell was amazing. I was heartbroken when she didn't win the Tony. After 5 nominations, I think she deserves one. haha In this production, Jan definitely was MUCH BETTER than Bernadette.
Thank you for posting this. When I saw this production of Follies on Broadway, Jan Maxwell blew me away! I loved this production so much I saw it twice and would have gone a third time, had I not wasted the money on Relatively Speaking. The only good things about that one were the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, Julie Kavner, Marlo Thomas, Grant Shaud, Mark-Linn Baker and Steve Guttenberg. It was awful. Follies was brilliant! Also loved Harry Connick, Jr. in On a Clear Day!
For those criticizing this, I agree it's not Alexis Smith's version and the choreography is not Michael Bennett's. However, this loses something on the screen. In person, Jan was totally spellbinding. In some ways I didn't even notice the choreography. I couldn't take my eyes off ofher throughout the entire show!
Jan Maxwell is the best Phyllis, since Alexis Smith! Awesome performer! If they would have stuck with Michael Bennett's choreography, she would have won that Tony!
Inasmuch as I don't want to criticize any part of this lovely revival, I have to agree with you on that one. Alexis simply nailed it and that's the reason why I avoid watching 'Lucy and Jessie' in recent productions...
Thank you so much for posting this (and all your Follies videos!). Would you by any chance have Ron's "Live Laugh Love"? I've been dying to see it again!
Ron Raines was terrific, and frankly, Bernadette Peters was miscast. She's not a lyric soprano and her voice was wrong for Sally. Jan Maxwell was outstanding and should have won the Tony!
I'm sorry the lady is no longer with us, but this is substandard work. If you never sae Alexis Smith in the original or Juliet Prowse in regional versions, you MIGHT think Maxwell is delivering the goods. But she comes across like the PTA President appearing with the local theater group.
Just awful. The choreography is terrible and Maxwell is embarrasing in it. Check out the video of Alexis Smith doing this number to see the power this number can have when done correctly

HOCUS POCUS FOCUS I CAUGHT THE FAVAR

RIP, talented lady :(

Thanks for posting! They revamped the number pretty effectively.

This reminds me of Ann Reinking's trumpet solo in Danci.

She's only eligible for Best Lead Actress in a Musical according to the eligibility rulings. I still think she has a great shot.
RIP JAN ❤
Jan would've made one heckuva Judith Bliss in Hayfever.
That is most definitely Jan Maxwell. Her character, Phyllis, sings this. Elaine Page played Carlotta.

Do you have Rain on the Roof and Ah, Paris?! I LOVE THOSE NUMBERS! Can you please post them if you have them?!
Isn't that Elaine Paige, not Jan Maxwell?
What else WOULD she be eligible for? she WAS one of the leads. (Bernadette being the other female lead) .. She certainly wasn't a "featured" performer
*pardon me, Elaine Paige, not Page.
I liked the Kennedy Center choreo more. This version is just so... anticlimactic.
