  • A compilation of my favourite TPO demonstration drops on the GCR, which showcase all out action through Quorn & Woodhouse station. The scenes are taken from 2013 to 2017, featuring speeds ranging between 30 & 40mph ! While not as quick as mainline speeds, these displays certainly give you the the full steam spectacle. Thirteen locomotives feature throughout the video. I hope you enjoy the compilation.
    Locos featured in video.

    When I went to the GCR my friend was doing train spotting and when Sir Lamiel (777) came through the tunnel my friend turned around and complained he had the number and missed the TPO drop but lucky my uncle filmed it in slow motion. He now knows to ignore the train spotting while the TPO goes through then sort the numbers out.

    Excellent video mate! So very lucky to have a full set of TPO coaches on the GCR. One of the railways I hope to visit when I come over to Britain in about three to four years time. I certainly won’t make it over there in a couple years unfortunately. But when I do, I cannot wait! I’m a huge fan of British Steam and I happen to be apart of the British Railway Modellers of Australia in my home state of South Australia. I have a fantastic 11 x 11 foot Great Western/Western Region Layout and am in the process of creating my first exhibition layout as well. Fantastic video by far and thank you so much for sharing.

    Outstanding! Excellent captures there and it brought back many memories. I used to work with the TPOs in the 80s although the bag apparatus was long gone by then.

    Great shots of the locos! But, what's the point if no one sets up cameras to catch the actual grab and drop the mail bags? There were a couple from great distance, and several where the cameras pan with the loco going by when the bag was snatched out of sight.

    The mail drop and collection is one those things that would look really good in slow motion on film. Only at the Great central can someone filming the TPO get bowled by a steam mixed freight as shown in one of the shots. Loved the compilation, I always enjoy my annual trip to the winter gala there.

    I wish the GCR would run other types of trains at these speeds (obviously no passengers would be allowed on board). Trains are so much more exciting at speed, they have so much more presence and purpose. I know you can observe fast steam on the main line, but you don't really get the variety of locos (including tanks), sounds of the jointed track, sights of pre-nationalisation stock and freight formations possible on preserved lines.

      @karlosbricks2413 5 лет назад

      What are you suggesting? Higher speed milk or fish trains? most forms of pre-nationalised goods was loose coupled, and the small percentage that were through braked aren't really preserved in huge numbers, not to mention the economics for running empty goods trains is relatively lacking. I would also love to see this sort of stuff, ,but I'm not aware of any operational rake of through-braked wagons on any heritage railway.

    You seemed far more interested in filming the engine than the actual post office train, everytime I close up came you moved your camera to follow the engine, therefore missing the bag drop off/collection, very dissapointing.

      6.27, 15.47 & 17.52 ! There's plenty of other videos available which constantly show the 'operation' but what they don't do is cover every angle of the postal train passing through the station. My main focus is always the locomotive and the build up of power prior to the postal drop. Is essence this is a video compilation of the best loco performances on the postal trains. Also, If I covered just the delivery and collection of the postal operation, people would complain I didn't pan and follow the locomotive, so I can't please everyone. This video gives you a better look at the operation !
