I would recommend that, after installing a new winch, you let out the line, connect to a fixed object on flat ground and then spool your line using just the rolling resistance of your vehicle. You would now have a line tightly wrapped around the drum. This prevents premature wear of your synthetic line if it wasn't tightly wrapped around the drum to begin with.

Great point... as you saw I also recommend that you "exercise" your winch every month or so (if you don't use it very often) to help keep the motor grease distributed evenly, burn off any water that may have found it's way into the motor and ensure its operationally ready for when you need it. Following your line spooling is one of the best ways to exercise it. www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/4x4-tech/gear-review/fj-cruiser-lift-kits/

Great Video. How much pulling capacity do you suggest the winch have for the FJ?
    Thanks.

Glad you liked it! 9,000 or 9,500 it pretty standard for FJ Cruisers.

thanks for the information sir I think that permanently mounting a winch to the font real limits the winch and it capabilities would it not be better to be able to put it one the back of the vichle also not to mention put it on a trailer. I don't have a tone of money to put a winch on the front and back of my truck and then one on my trailer also. trying to figure all this out.

iwantosavemoney many people use a trailer hitch mount for their winch so they can move it to the front or rear. Not something we need but it's an option
