    It would be cool to build a real urban high school in the city really close or in the downtown. I feel like I haven’t seen that from you yet, it might be cool to base it off one in Seattle or San Francisco, just a suggestion!

    I would suggest adding a system comprised of some former-alleyways that have been turned into bike-oriented pathways. Also some playgrounds would be cool.

      This is something I really, really wish was in CS to begin with - the ability to take a stretch of road and restrict it to only pedestrians and bikes.
      Hopefully if they make a Cities Skylines 2, I hope they go for a more people-oriented mentality rather than North American car-dependent city sprawl.

    San Francisco has a Little Italy in North Beach! it's right next to the financial district, and it's been slowly encroached upon by that district as the city's strongly Italian population disappeared. In most places you can barely notice that there's an Italian enclave there anymore, but if you look at the light posts in it they have Italian flags painted on them.

    If you wanna have inspiration for a hill side city that kinda looks like Portland but with a bigger downtown, look at MONTRÉAL, CANADA. That's exactly what it is. The big hill is the biggest park of the city with a man-made lake and 2 vista point to look at the city. The only thing is it's not from the Pacific region haha.

    Re: The central plaza. Here in Portland, Maine there's a square downtown that used to be the site of this grand old post office building that was torn down in the 60's a la urban renewal - called Post Office Park now, with a cool outline in brick of where the building stood. Would make sense for a post office/courthouse/etc as you want that area to be civic, line up with the idea of business/life moving out in the 60s/70s. The building was originally built after a big fire in the city - maybe Cabrillo also had a massive fire in its past?

    • @afericssonfilms
      @afericssonfilms 3 года назад +1

      I was thinking along the same lines. In Boston, a whole block in Post Office Square was demolished for a parking garage in the 1950s, and the garage was demolished and turned into the lovely park in the 80s. The post office for which the square is named survived the Great Boston Fire of 1872 at the edge of the burnt district, which also ties into the fire aspect. www.google.com/maps/place/Post+Office+Square/@42.3550831,-71.0570725,321a,35y,31.88h,29.11t/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x89e37083fe4d282f:0xf15b9e53f3c4fb6b!8m2!3d42.3563555!4d-71.055543

    The waterfront park could be mostly a park with a small chunk of recently revitalized industrial buildings (maybe like 2-6 old industrial halls, wharves, or an old train depot, something small like that, that left behind enough open space to be mostly outdoor park spaces) somewhere in the downtown area as has been a trend in many cities. It shows some of the city's history and can be seen as a public space that can still seem like a natural part of the city without being too commercial.

  • @ApollonDriver
    @ApollonDriver 3 года назад +4

    You should make sure the city has proper service buildings like police stations, hospitals, fire stations and schools. Especially fire stations because most CSL youtubers skip that thinking "I will turn fires off already FD stations are unnecessary" but actually fire planning is important in cities, creating fire stations in accessible places and such.

    I like having ideas of names for everything, so I just want to give a name for the square. So the square will be called Federal Square. In the 1970s the government had made a block of federal building in that area, and one of the concrete buildings was in that spot. In the 1990s the building had a water leak that caused extensive problems to the bottom floor services in the building. The government had moved the offices out of the building and next door into their other buildings. The building fell into disrepair and was not being used for the next 5 years. In 1995 the city had voted to remove the building and add in a nice plaza for the workers to rest in after a long day in their building. The building was demolished in about a year and the new plaza was done in about 7 months. On July 4th, 1996 the plaza was opened to the general public for everyone to use. That is my suggestion and the history behind the plaza. I do this because I just really want to have something named by me in one of his cities that can be there forever.

    Pioneer Square is partly named for the old Pioneer Courtouse next to it, which is one of the oldest courthouse in the Western US. Naming the square after a similarly notable building, perhaps that isn't there anymore, would be a nice touch. Maybe an old market hall or post office?

    I think there should be buildings along the water front. Properties that maybe the city had to retro fit in some way to make them more accessible to the public. Or like in Portland where there's a bike path that literally goes out over the river to get around a section of highway that was in the way.

    name/story for the center square: In the early 1900s an earthquake shook the city of cabrillo, many homes and business were damaged leaving citizens without shelter and basic necessities, the square was originally an open plot of land in the middle of the city about to be developed. Aid coming in from other cities chose this spot as it was close to residents, and had no debris obstructing it. food, water and shelter was given on this land which helped the residents of cabrillo rebuild and come together as a community, to recognize this significant point in Cabrillo’s history, the city created “Outlook Square” in the 1970s on that same plot of land. it has gone through 2 renovations, the most recent one being in 2005.

As a suggestion, maybe in some episodes you could talk about which buildings you chose and show them off. I enjoyed you talking about the types of bridges, what real-world bridges they resembled, etc. Maybe just take a few minutes to show off the buildings you picked for each district as you're working on them. I'd also be interested in road assets, and props, all that stuff. Thanks!

    A low-rise mixed use commercial wharf area similar to Pier 39 in SF would be perfect between the two bridges leading into the CBD. The piers would be a mainstay of the industrial shipping from Cabrillo’s development and an obvious up-zoning area from a downtown restoration project c. ~1990.

    The little orange plaza could be name Columbus Square/Lutuli Point, and this is its backstory:
    Founded in the early 1910s, the plaza was named Columbus Square in honor of the famous explorer and to represent the growing Italian population in Cabrillo. During the 60s and 70s it was a prominent place for civil and gay rights protests, as it was close to the financial district. However since the late 2000s, some advocacy groups have questioned the name as it reminds some of the horrors of colonialism and the name Lutuli Point has been floated around, garnering support from Cabrillo's African-American population, although the remaining Italian American population in Cabrillo has protested the change heavily.
    Lutuli was a South African civil rights leader, fighter against apartheid and winner of the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize.
    Nowadays, the city council is reconsidering the name change, and has asked us, Pres' subscribers, to hold a special vote to decide which of the two names should it be.

    I know this is gonna get buried, but I can confirm that a little Italy is a good idea, because there were actually a solid amount of Italians who came during the Gold Rush, and maybe they formed their own community in Cabrillo.
    Also, you were asking how this plaza/park came to be, and that can have a story something along the lines of this: one of the blocks had the largest building in the city during the 1800s; it functioned as a shopping mall with wealthier families living in a few apartments up top. Then, however, the earthquake hit; and destroyed the building along with many others. Cabrillo was severely impacted by this and decided to dedicate some funding along with citizens to construct a plaza in memory to their largest building and the lives lost during the earthquake.
    On a similar note, I think you should ensure that the city reflects the fact that there was an earthquake; maybe a museum or a building of that sort dedicated to informing citizens and tourists about it. Hopefully this isn't too big of an ask but it was fun to write!
