Agreed. Also I think a lot of people watch just to see the city be built so I think the lore 2nd treats it a little more as bonus content for those who are interested, which I think it is.
Personally I watch your videos for your creativity and awesome city building, and I do not really care very much for the story behind places. That said, I have no qualms with how you decided to format the video and what you discuss; however, I would suggest to “flip” the segments. By showing what the city is like in the beginning and what you created removed a sense of anticipation-it “spoils” the time lapse section seeing you make something great. Also, I was a big fan of the “inspiration station” aspect of your precious videos. A tweak to the format I would recommend: - quick and brief overview of what you are building and why (basically a 2-3 min summary of the first segment) - traditional timelapse like in the second segment - segment 1 - concluding statements I think the above format maintains everything you are trying to accomplish while also not “spoiling” too much of what you built, thus maintaining anticipation and interest through the entire video.
What do you think that initial overview should include? It seems an awful lot like Inspiration Station in my old format, just ingame instead of with Google Earth. Nonetheless an interesting idea, so let me know what you have in mind.
@@PresCities Well, there was nothing wrong about inspiration station in the first place--the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" adage is applicable here. Nonetheless, my personal suggestion would be to give some intro cinematic showing the area somewhat half-way finished. I think you could make something unique by beginning the cinematics with the build actually half-way done with the road layouts already in place but not much more than. Personally if I were a content creator with the same objectives, I would also go so far as to even place light detailing down to show that the area didn't spring up from nowhere--of course if you are specifically making a new development like an outer-ring suburb, that is not necessary. By skipping the road layout of the traditional time-lapse you are increasing the story-telling value by showing that this was a real area that is being developed as it would naturally in the real-world. During these first few minutes I imagine you obviously speaking over the area briefly describing the area's background, what you would like to achieve in the project, and then maybe a couple real-world examples if you are inclined. Alternatively, you could also think of it in terms of an academic paper whereby the intro gives very brief background to hook the audience (such as X is the problem and this is why), sets up the theory (in this case, how you are going to show X via the game), and then leads into the time-lapse.
The new format actually was amazing. Really felt like i was watching a show or documentary on real neighborhoods and cities. Excellent work as always Pres!
The cinematics sometimes seem to have a flat lighting, it looks like you don't even have shadows on. I would personally shoot them with the sun a bit lower to get more interesting shadows. I think it'd bring out the terrain a little more too. Either way I love this series, you do not only make the effort to make a detailed cities skylines city BUT you also work to get a message across and its totally worth it
I’ll be honest, would have loved to see the cinematics in the second half rather than the first. I just had no motivation to watch after seeing the finished product.
Just watched the whole series after finding your channel through How Cities: Skylines Makes You Plan Bad Cities. I love the thoughts and stories behind the build it makes the city feel like a real place.
Some Painted Lady Victorians here and there, some old timey gas station/auto shops, Safeway grocery store trucks, a cannabis shop, amazon vans, CR England semi with trailer, hobo tents, and some history on freeway expansion? Nice. Looks like the east bay. Starting to look like Oakland headed east out near Highway 24 and Rockridge/Bart.
I was actually in the actual Cabrillo this week. Neat little place in Mendocino. A couple of things that would be cool: - Wineries. They're everywhere over NorCal/Oregon and would make for some nice work for the rural areas. It would also be fitting for a small town focused almost exclusively on wine and B&B (you know what I'm referring to) to be in the outskirts of the Cabrillo area. But also, to focus on the huge migrant populations in those areas, by clearly showing some divide between the rich Enotourism areas and the poor, overworked farm worker settlements. AFAIK No one's really done this industry justice in C:S. - Corporate Campuses in some sort of Edge City. Also very typical, but also very underdone in C:S. - If we're building homeless encampments, make sure to blend in some sort of food bank. Love this series otherwise. It's the most far reaching series on actual Urban Planning concepts and things in C:S I've seen so far.
Yes to all of this! They could all tie really well into the community activism themes of Cabrillo. So maybe there's a conflict in the city over whether to attract a multinational to build a new corporate campus (sort of how some communities were divided or resistant to the proposed Amazon HQ2). Plus how the wineries dealt with prohibition could be a fun way of fleshing out Cabrillo's history.
Doesn't matter what you do mate, someone won't like it. My advice - stick with what makes you happy and keeps you motivated. I'd rather you followed the enjoyment in CS wherever that may go instead of hanging up your boots from burnout on a shitty project you don't enjoy. Keep smashing it bro!
Can you please do an episode like this on homelessness in general? Like what causes it, anti homeless architecture, and what could be done to help these people instead of just slum clearing? Maybe in the ep you could build a neighborhood based on Old Town Portland, OR? Great vid!
Solid video! I spend a lot of time between West Oakland and Rockridge for work and this city gives me such a similar vibe. I work right next to the old 880 and am hoping to see an industrial area in Cabrillo as I work my way through your series.
I greatly enjoyed the new format, but agree with others; the build first please. Besides that, when you start talking about the area's and their history, please mark the features you're talking about. Where do the neighbourhoods stop, where was the streetcar and where are the avenues. Might as well mark the highway, although that is much easier to spot.
Loving the new format. Adds a sense of realism to your builds. I've always appreciated the way you tied in real urban planning issues to your build. Most builders on RUclips don't do that but you excel at it. Also, the muzak this episode was great. Always a vibe.

The new concept is fine, though I find it would seem more interesting if you swapped the time-lapse part with the first story-telling one - seeing the end at the beginning may seem quite demotivating in some way. Thank you for sharing some great content!
I havent heard from you in months!! Are you still currently playing or not on RUclips any more because of college?? Please come back soon, I miss Cabrillo and I miss the videos!!
Will there be a video of a tour of the city because I would enjoy that a lot, also I think a birds eye view of the city with labels of each district would be awesome
I plan on periodically making cinematic tours of previously-built areas as we continue with this new format. I also plan on making some sort of broader tour every ~20 or ~25 episodes, so maybe that'll be coming soon.
I love this commentary format, and the close ups of the neighborhood, really makes the city feel alive like a real place and it continues to make cabrillo my favroite CS build on youtube right now
I've just binged this series and you're now my favourite C:S RUclipsr! And I think the new format is great - so casting my vote in favour of that ^^ btw I'd love to see you build a "utopian" city - i.e. what would you build if politics didn't get in the way? Maybe even just a newer development in part of Cabrillo built with modern and progressive ideas on urban planning... it's really interesting to imagine what cities could look like if we had things like labour rights, more cooperatives, UBI, direct democracy, actually decent social housing / more housing co-ops etc.
The only thing I don't really like about this format is how the cinematics for the video are before the timelapse. It just is a bit backwards I think and makes the timelapse slightly less enjoyable cause you've already seen the finished project. sidenote: it doesn't really matter, but I feel like its getting a little bit too political, but its no big deal just feedback

pres you’ve rlly inspired me to build me own city since i cant afford cities skylines im building my city on minecraft. its inspired from New Winsdor and Cabrillo and it its skyline is 8 skyscrapers and little office buildings and the city is named Aeria and the population of Aeria is 956k :)
Hey, awesome video! I like the new format but maybe you could show us where you’re going to be building either at the beginning or at the end of the episode. ✌️
I really like the new format, the idea, but I think the results should be shown after the making of it. I don't know, maybe it's because I'm more used to see first the timelaps building it, but I feel it's better connected. You could put the timelaps and the explaining saying how you built it, and then in the second segment the reasoning, story and all.those things
I like the new format but as other have said I feel like have the commentary/story first sorta spoils the time lapse and I had trouble watching the entirety after knowing what it looked like from the first half. So in my opinion I would switch the two segments around.
I’m really liking this new format for the video. The only thing I have against this was that you were pretty much constantly talking throughout the video. So I would suggest to give us a little break. It was a lot of information to take in at once.
Really enjoyed the new format! The worldbuilding you're doing is fantastic, and again, it's a really interesting dive into US municipal politics. Chicano Park is such a fantastic inspiration, and the community story of Peralta is just brilliant. The guy who kept the bricks, for example, sounds like a brilliant member of the community. The stuff on microenterprises was really important, as that's an issue often ignored. Perhaps if there is a debate about renaming some big piece of public infrastructure in Cabrillo (so how there is currently that big push to stop honoring Confederate generals and the like), maybe Inez Clemente could be the proposed renaming? Also if she served in Congress, maybe there's a couple of big local projects that she secured funding for that still stand? One thing I'd love to see are more ethnic enclaves, because they really do help distinguish cities. One thing I find really fascinating is when there is a community that was previously the centre of one ethnic community, but while it retains its historical importance to that community, there is now a new community that is making it its home as well. So for example, how there are places in Michigan that were once home to big Polish populations, and still have lots of big institutions and historic churches and so on, but now are centres of Arab communities. So there's new mosques next to old churches, Polish and Arabic store signs next to each other, that kind of thing. Another, and this could tie well into the themes of activism throughout the series, is how there are some places that have a population, of refugees and their descendants, that is almost unique in the US. So Minnesota's big Somali and Hmong populations, for instance.
Enjoyed the history part, but feel it can really be tightened up a bit. However I feel It was way too long. The structure is more planned out now, which is good, but this is a city builder game and that is what most might be coming here for… the building and creativity. Time lapse and building should still make up the majority of the video. Not saying the history and lore is not interesting, but keep it tighter and add it after the time laps. That way we can see the finished product and the results and history won’t just spoil everything.
I love the new format, imo the planning info is the important part. I watch the whole thing through ofc, but for the second part I can do other stuff in the background too. You also seem a bit more relaxed in the new format, I assume it's easier to say everything you want to say when you can just add in more cinematics if you run out of time.
I have questions. When was this city established? Was it originally a city or was it a small village that grew into a city? I'd like to know about how the public transportation became what it is to this day. It can be in mini series or a prequel to the sequel. What do you think?
You’re constantly fixing something that isn’t broken. It’s cool that you care so much about your videos and political geography/city planning though. You obviously know what you’re talking about. This is my fav cs channel but I’d rather the building/creativity come first, narrative second. I hate that one of my favorite chill out times is filled with politics and opinion, when its so hard to escape elsewhere. Yes, this stuff is important, but this is just a game :)
this gives me a strange Marysville, Chico, and Sacramento vibes... please please check these cities out on a map, etc. it looks very similar to all three in different eays
Pres have you thought about flipping the format? building the areas and then going over the history? Either works honestly i’m just wondering what you thought about that
I feel like your viewer base is split into two main categories: those interested in the creative process and quirks or building a city and those who are much more interested in the political side of things. I think it is pretty much impossible to please both so just do whatever is more fun for you to make. I'll keep watching either way.
I have been subscribed to your channel since Aramore and loved every series you’ve made❤️ But lately (especially with Carrillo and the new format) I feel the videos have taken a turn towards something that don’t really interest me. I know you are studying urban planning and therefore it is only natural you wanna talk about it. But all that history and information stuff just feels kind of pointless to someone like me, who primarily wants to enjoy the beauty of the game that is C:S. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I miss the good times where the reason of a build didn’t have to be realism but also the fact that it just looked freakin cool:) I’m yet to find the heartbeat of this series and hope I will find it❤️
I really enjoy the details, histories and politics you get into with the backstories of each neighborhood. This is a unique way to present your build as far as I know. Please keep it coming, I really look forward to all your videos.
The new format is awesome! I liked the blended commentary version, but I really enjoy the compartmentalization and expansion this format allows you in communicating this incredible project!
Just wanna say don't listen to the people telling you not to talk about politics. Urban design is and has always been political, and you are right to talk about it
Hmmm… i like the new format BUT i think you should have the time-lapse before the discrimination because its kinda like a spoiler for the rest of the video and its harder to enjoy the second part. Obviously you should do what you want but thats what i think. (Id still watch youre videos either way lol)
Loving the urban planning commentary as usual. I'm of the people who would be fine only seeing that, so the fact that it's getting a whole scripted segment is great!
I like the commentary portion a lot, but I’d love to see the time lapse first so the commentary doesn’t spoil the end product, y’know?
Agreed. Also I think a lot of people watch just to see the city be built so I think the lore 2nd treats it a little more as bonus content for those who are interested, which I think it is.
Ya I definitely agree with u
5:25 that grandma, isn't in the best headspace right now. Oh my goodness she just turned into a sudan.
A true legend, still protesting the freeway decades after it was constructed. XD
A Sudan? A whole central African country!?
I think that you should do the time lapse first, and the story second. Nevertheless, loving the series!!
I like the new format. I would just make the commentary 2nd so the final views of views of build are a suprise.
Personally I watch your videos for your creativity and awesome city building, and I do not really care very much for the story behind places.

did you just write a whole essay about his format?
By no means is this an essay lol. Just some constructive criticism

I have been subscribed to your channel since Aramore and loved every series you’ve made❤️
But lately (especially with Carrillo and the new format) I feel the videos have taken a turn towards something that don’t really interest me.
I know you are studying urban planning and therefore it is only natural you wanna talk about it. But all that history and information stuff just feels kind of pointless to someone like me, who primarily wants to enjoy the beauty of the game that is C:S.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I miss the good times where the reason of a build didn’t have to be realism but also the fact that it just looked freakin cool:) I’m yet to find the heartbeat of this series and hope I will find it❤️
I know it’s school but buddy where are you?
doing school
I really enjoy the details, histories and politics you get into with the backstories of each neighborhood. This is a unique way to present your build as far as I know. Please keep it coming, I really look forward to all your videos.
did enjoy every second of it...keep it up.
Intelligent commentary. Love the format.
loved the new format
The new format is awesome! I liked the blended commentary version, but I really enjoy the compartmentalization and expansion this format allows you in communicating this incredible project!
I love the new breakdown of the video
Just wanna say don't listen to the people telling you not to talk about politics. Urban design is and has always been political, and you are right to talk about it
Love the format!
Keep the format. It is something different as you said. And I also think that it is cool that you use zoning combined with plopping.
Love the new format. Was surprised to hear you wanted to change old format but seeing this now I definitely think it’s better
new format slaps!
Great new format, awesome video - as always - and amazing work!!
And thanks for the latino neighborhood!
=)
i would swap the segments around so the timelapse is at the beginning and the story and cinematics are at the end.
I like the new format!
Hey Pres you should start a new series and be kind of a Hawaii/Honolulu city that would be great 👍🙂🙃
love the format :)
You should make a series set in central florida not Miami BC two dollars twenty did it maybe Tampa or sum
Hmmm… i like the new format BUT i think you should have the time-lapse before the discrimination because its kinda like a spoiler for the rest of the video and its harder to enjoy the second part. Obviously you should do what you want but thats what i think. (Id still watch youre videos either way lol)
great because i think its a nicer format
Loved this format!
It would be nice if you could highlight the area you are talking about in the total shots.
5:22 haha wtf
Loving the urban planning commentary as usual. I'm of the people who would be fine only seeing that, so the fact that it's getting a whole scripted segment is great!
