I love doing charts. Since you have a cat, I will have to share story. My roommates cats liked to jump up and get in the middle of her art projects. Most of the time she was able to stop the cats from getting into her paints. One day she was doing a color chart for art class and she stepped away to make some tea and when she came back there was a trail of blue paw prints all across her color chart. Perfect blue paw prints and no smudges. No cats in the room. She found the cat with the blue foot and cleaned him up. She left the blue foot prints on her project. Her teacher loved it. LOL. Apparently we are not the only species that like to paint. Great video Thanks!
I too am color chart obsessed. I like this method too, but usually make an easy grid with a clear square stamp in Archival Ink then get busy mixing. I leave room to grow for new colors I might (will) buy. My highest praise for my charts came from my artist daughter who asked if she could have them when I am dead 😳
I've learned more about color mixing gouache than I did in my two years in a graphic design program (back in the 90s). Probably because there weren't any teachers who did gouache. And I am working on making a portable mixing chart for when I finally get my pleinair painting kit together.
I bow to you ☺️ freedom from color chart pressure! Doing them on separate sheets will let me move them with different setups, too. This is a much better way to see how colors truly work with each other. Thank you!!!!! 🌺

I particularly appreciate your advice about mixing variations or irregularities being something valuable to learn from, rather than mistakes that ruin the entire exercise. So true, but hard to remind ourselves of that! Your swatches, handled as you show, prepare us so much better for “real painting.” And it’s great to see what you demonstrated about Quin Magenta being a powerhouse mixing color. Thank you!!
One of my favorite things is to mix paint!!! I have watched your videos for a very long time but completely missed this one! I ended up finding it through downloading the beginner gouache PDF! :D I'm happy both ways! I love the way these look! Now to figure out how to make minis to go at the same time! Very helpful, thanks Sarah! Almost all of my charts are like this one because I'm just too lazy to do it the other way. I also find the "messier" charts to be more helpful and look more similar to how the paint would actually look when used.
Ooh thank you so much for sharing! This looks really fun and seems like an intuitive method. I have to say I find those neat charts with strict boxes a bit intimidating, because I'm the kind of person who will make a monthly spread in my journal and realise I've left out Saturday only after inking all the grids 😂 so I'm excited to try this out! I have a few new watercolours coming in soon from a Jackson's sale that I've never tried before, so I'm very intrigued to see what they'll be like. Thanks again!

I tend to do that kind of color charts when I have a new color that I want to explore more. Quinacridone Magenta is such a nice mixing color. 💝 I want to get my hands on Quinacridone Magenta by QOR. Personally, I have only tried Purple Magenta by Schmincke and Permanent Magenta by Mission Gold (currently on my main palette).

Hi, is this to say that every single color will be mixed with every single color? (aka if you have 6 colors, you'll have like 30 "swatches" for each color, aka green with pink, green with yellow, green with orange... then another page for pink with green, pink with yellow, pink with orange...etc. etc)?
Yea pretty much You can avoid duplicate mixes if you want - I find it's nice to have a whole sheet based on one color as the 'base' color that I can quickly reference. So I can compare an Ultramarine vs. Anthraquinone blue color scheme very quickly
Can anyone answer this question. I’m really new to watercolors. When making this chart am I using any color in my palette as the secondary or should it be a complimentary color of the primary color?
The goal is to mix all your colors with eachother (in pairs) so eventually you see the variety of mixes you get. But it's customizable based on your needs...It's up to you!

Do you clean out the color B paint blob after you have touched your paint brush containing color A to it so many times. And yes, I do have OCD tendencies. 😆
No, in this exercise I try not to clean my brush between the mixes in one row, because that helps create a more natural transition between colors. Occasionally you might find there's too much of one color here and there and you have to clean, but you kinda get into a rhythm.
OMG it s so messy and ineven,🤣🤣🤣 HI Sarah I did a gouache mixing achart {greens} ,but when i use it I feel like it s not helping me, and when I want a color I cant have the same color that is already in the achart. I have a problem mixing greens cuz I dont get a special colors , i always get the same repetitive green. LOVE YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE MY FAVOURITE ARTIST.
Greens are tricky for sure. What I recommend is finding some paintings by artists that you really really love that include greens. Try to mix those same greens on your own paper or canvas. To test it out you can hold up the swatch/paper/brush to the screen (or to the photo if you printed out their art). After you do this for a few paintings, you start to notice patterns. A lot of times a green is VERY tinted in the highlights and shadows. or is very greyed down. It's hard to tell until you color match it. This information can be used in future paintings of similar lighting situations.

The greens, oranges and purples . and boy did a lot of colors surprised me. Some of the greens turned to be almost golden 😂

Usually not, unless I got too much of one color. If you don't wash your brush, I think it's easier to get a nice transition from mix to mix
I love this. Are you using a size 6 brush ? The sea scapes swatch is a good idea, can you say what colours they are ?
It's a #8 brush. All my colors are shared in my supply list (in description)
