They're both ways of birth, birth is natural. They both have their pros & cons. Why are C-Sections & epidurals looked down on so much? And why are women so judgey about them? Like it's somehow "better" to make yourself suffer? Why do pregnant women feel like they have to do this & vaginal birth is some type of thing that makes you better than other pregnant women who get c-sections or have epidurals? I'll never get it. It's so sad.
bceause c sections ARENT natural. Your body doesnt just naturally rip open from the stomach to take the baby out. and epidurals are chemicals that arent natural to help you not feel pain therefor its not a natural birth. You didnt see our ancestors giving birth through these methods before
I'm an OB nurse and never once in my career have I seen a baby born later than 41 wks.... I couldn't even watch this video beyond 7 minutes. Where in the world are they getting this information from. Biggest pet peeve is when parents think they know more than the trained medical professionals that have years and years of experience. Also I cannot believe you told your midwife to "chill"...WOW.
Morgan Davis As a nurse myself I have to agree with you. I'm certainly glad mama and baby are well but, you know as well as I do if something went severely wrong the medical personnel would be the first to blame. People don't understand that we have to ask the personal questions and give the uncomfortable information they don't want to hear, not just to be mean and make them "nervous" but to document it was done and they understand possible circumstances, also because it's our job and we're committed to doing what's right for both parties involved
Also, if a thing works for you as a person, the experience cannot be translated into a generality. A lot of things could have gone wrong, good thing it didn't, it doesn't mean that for others it will be exactly the same as theirs.
I think it's potentially dangerous to tell people that 'the baby will come when it wants to come'... unfortunately a lot of births aren't as simple as that. Safety is the most important thing.

I agree with you Chloe. It is odd that Alex was still trying to keep Mimi away from the epidural or c-section. She is the one feeling the pain of contractions (not waves, they ARE contractions) and if she wants to get the baby out that way, then so be it. It is her body and she is very capable of making her own decisions. I couldn't keep watching. The risks are not exaggerated! People don't realize how common stillbirths are. As a mother who had a stillborn baby at 38 weeks, I don't appreciate anyone belittling the incredible loss we have experienced. You are so incredibly BLESSED to have a live healthy baby. The reason why the Drs. Have protocols is because of the high risks of stillbirth.
Hi Mimi i usually agree with most that you say, however as a medical student who has done my rotation in obstetrics I really have to disagree with you stance on 'overdue'. Every week that you go over your baby is getting bigger and increasing the risk that they will not be able to get through the birth canal and so ending up you having an emergency section. Much better to be induced than an emergency section . I know you think it is all natural , however until you actually see a delivery come to an emergency you haven't really got a full idea. I dont really like the way your trying to imply it's about money because its not, the doctors have guidelines set for them about 42 weeks. Also the reason why babies dont die in childbirth anymore is because of doctor intervention - especially when going overdue...
Eva Grace - thank you for the comment. Also I have to disagree with mimi when she said everywhere in the world they offer an induction at 39 weeks or pessary - they do not. With my first baby they wouldn't even touch me till I was over 40 weeks before they would consider doing a sweep and they surely wouldn't induce anyone unless they are at least 41 weeks with a good reason - however at 42 weeks you are overdue and you are risking your baby and having a natural delivery.
not only the baby gets big, but the placenta gets old and the risk for the baby gets higher and higher after the 42 weeks. There is A LOT of research that proves this.
I rarely ever comment. But as a doctor, who went to school for 8 years, took 6 different 8-9 hr board exams, additional 3 years of residency. Hearing you compare your "research" to the stress and hard work of those compiled years all the while being very degrading to doctors. The OB/GYN field is not an easy one, it takes passion and heart to do what these medical doctors do. They have the highest malpractice insurance, as much as you say oh you are choosing what you want now, if something goes wrong, the parents never blame themselves, the blame always goes to the doctor. There are risks and benefits to either side (induction and waiting for natural progression). At 42 weeks the risks outweigh the benefits. I am so happy that everything went well you guys and you have a beautiful healthy baby. But I have seen when things go very wrong, it ruins families. I have been in a room where the midwife kept telling the mom it was ok to keep trying for natural birth,2 hours later she was in the OR with not the best outcome. Yes childbirth is a natural process. However, before medical advances the mortality (both maternal and infant) were twice as high as they are now. I wonder how we as a society got here? By first time parents doing "research"? Something to think about before you roll your eyes at the mention of a doctor. Be informed, get involved in your own personal healthcare but don't insinuate that doctors don't know what they are telling you and that they are running a business, to run a business would be an easier undertaking. Completely agree reality is until you have close friends and family or yourself experienced a stillborn due to being over due it's not something everyone women may understand. Because it happens . I had a baby died after 2mths even since then my anxiety increases so I don't like going near 42wks. You have to experience to understand . By all means comes to 42wks but understand risk exsit With that.

I don't know anything medical related but my daughter was a week late and I remember wanting to wait so I could have the whole natural experience from water breaking to dilating without being induced and my doctor was like nope, sorry but that is dangerous for your baby. After the 40th week hit she gave me just a week and scheduled an induction.
Actually, she is right about the risks of an induction being higher than the risks associated when going past your due date. I was a total mess when my doctor told me that they wouldn't even consider an induction until I went past 42 weeks. People & the internet kept saying how dangerous it was. But when I actually looked up the studies (I wanted to show my doctor how dangerous it really was -HAHA), I could only find studies that showed how much healthier it was for both mother & baby when babies (who've received proper natale care and are in good health) come at their own pace. Keep in mind that medical schools in different countries teach things differently and America (where they are most likely to pressure you into having an unnecessary induction) has a ridiculously high rate of infant death compared to other countries. I wish I'd seen this video before giving birth. Definitely listen to your doctor, but also do your own research and let him/her know about any concerns you might have.

I'm a third year medical student as well, and that's the problem, people should do their research but they should also ear the doctors and they can't and won't make a decision for you, they make decisions with you, an informed decision. Din't like the fact that Mimi encourages people to go against medical advice, because every person is different and it worked out for her but for others may not work so great... You can imagine the eye rolling and exasperation in the staff room from those dealing with the know it all couple who describe the work and observation of the OB staff as fidgeting and who stand corrected on what is best after having read a few articles. I imagine there will be ongoing expertise on this channel as the novice parents tell us all what is the best way to parent. As an OB professional I found this video disturbing and judging by the huge amount of negative comment, particularly from those with higher understanding, I am not alone. Yes your baby arrived safely in the end, but there are no guarantees of normal child development when neonates are excessively stressed, for whatever reason, in any labour. May I also say, that contraction is a medical term, wave is not!

A lot of labor is a mental game, so every individuals perception of the word determines whether it is helpful or "wrong", so yes, to some women including myself "waves" is more encouraging and you have a visual of something peaceful and powerful to associate with.

You know who stands to gain zero funds, and lose their medical licence? I would never recommend a c-section to my patients, if that is not what they wished for. However, if your baby enters a risk zone where the benefits of performing the surgery, outweigh the risk of newborn mortality. You WILL get a c-section. I am so happy for you, I just wish that you guys would be a little bit more careful with the way you express your ideas because you do influence many people, specially young couples. Even though you had everything monitored and thankfully everything went well with Alexa's birth, the risks increase drastically after 42 weeks and the doctor's advice should not be ignored. A young woman was convinced that everything had to be natural and refused to induce labor, I met her because in Dental school I did an internship with disabled children... Due to the lack of oxygen during birth the child had permanent brain damage. She was a beautiful girl, that will never experience the world as she should. Why give the chance? It is better to just find a good doctor and trust her/his knowledge.

I'm just annoyed at the lack of humility, specially Alex, saying he basically took charge, that he thought of delivering himself... Mimi was in excruciating pain, the baby wasn't in the right position and bad things could have happened without the staff. Those bad things are also a part of nature, a very common one before modern medicine. So please don't act like you knew better and that nature's way is the best way because nature also kills. Please accept that you were LUCKY to have been able to (kinda) stick to your birth plan. Be humble. You don't always know best. And I really hope you meant "we" when you repeatedly said "I don't want a c-section".

My heart rate dropped at birth and I NEARLY DIED.There were like 50 doctors in the room. WTF, Alex? Hearts beat for a reason. At birth, they beat fast. Or they SHOULD, anyway. Both Alexa and I are lucky to be here, and be healthy too - but that's not to say we weren't, at some point, in danger.

I am so happy for them both and happy that baby Alexa is doing fine! I've been watching Alex & Mimi for a looooong time now, but what really upset me about the video was the fact that they acted so surprised that public healthcare was surprisingly better than private healthcare (this gave me a tiny idea of how they both view things, in life) Like they always want to be above everyone else... a bit arrogant. Mary A that's a shame as they both claim transparency & authenticity yet they delete thousands of the comments they don't agree with, I understand some of them got pretty negative but not an excuse, I mentioned in a previous comment that instead of deleting them they should have been responding to each one of them or at least make a special video addressing all the concerns. I am not a subscriber however I watch a video if the title interests me but I noticed the value of their content is not consistent. I was born via C-section and have an incredible and beautiful bond with my Mother. Not to mention, healthy as can be! You and Alex need to get off your high pedestal. I'm thankful for the Doctors and nurses that did what was best for my mother and me at the time.
EDIT: Guys.. go watch Alex' video " Overcoming disability ". The whole 'relaxation' thing might be annoying but it's coming from someone who overcame a disability and from what he said in the video it looks like a lot of it was possible because of his will to heal. I feel bad for judging him... everyone has a story that explains why they are how they are and why they think like they think. +Mozzarellab3lla very easy to have a strong opinion when you're not the one in labour. My obstetrician told me about a couple he took care of and they decided they didn't want to have an epidural. The big day came and the mother was so desperate for an epidural, but because they made a decision beforehand, the husband refused to let her have one. My ob basically says, the only birth plan you need is to get to the hospital in time to push. Everything else is unpredictable.
I just finished watching the video and I cannot believe that Alex told the nurses to calm down and everything was okay when the heart frecuency of the baby drop down. That's the main indicative that your baby is suffering of lack of oxygen. You are truly a very irresponsable person.

Even with Alex's app! Did you all know that the onset of labour is when you can't walk or talk through contractions? Regardless of a woman's pain threshold. It has nothing to do with effacement or dilatation of a cervix. So much for their research. Alex a maternity ward is a work place not a hotel where you can leave a do not disturb sign. I had to laugh when he said Oxytocin got the baby in there. Really? I've been mislead all my life.

My last pregnancy was an emergency c-section due to heart rate dropping I was 40 weeks pregnant Heart rate dropped, my son pooped inside and swallowed everything that wasn't supposed to be swallowed Also the cord was wrapped around his neck if I wouldn't have went for the csection he would have died My son was in the nicu for 2 weeks with an infection! Please don't google!!! Let the doctors do their job!!!!

Ciliawillia C I had a c section as well coz my sons heart rate dropped n it became an emergency,rushed to theatre,right after everything was sorted I had my skin to skin,bonded with my baby,love my baby n yes it took a while to heal but I wouldn't change it for anything

Why if they wanted such a "natural" birth did they not just stay at home to have the baby? All they do in this video is moan and complain about "fidgety" midwives and doctors who don't know anything. I think they come across as completely ignorant. How dare they say how bad a c-section is, this is all they're focusing on yet Mimi had an epidural, why don't they go on about how dangerous this could be too? And its certainly not natural!! After 20 hours of labour I ended up having a c-section because this was best for my baby! I was completely calm and had my husband there calming me the whole time so this doesn't always equate to having a natural birth! They need to state that this is THEIR OPINION on birth and not the way of the world. Please don't preach to everybody about "facts" because I really don't think you have any regarding birth. I'm disappointed in this video.
Erm it didn't sound like that to me. Perhaps if you re-watch the video you will hear them constantly saying "YOU need to do this", " YOU shouldn't do that", etc. That's implying that their way is the right way and everyone else is doing it wrong. Congratulations on your baby. Speaking as a medical professional (and a mother) I was saddened to see so much mis-information (and statements bordering on mockery of the medical profession) in this video. Every pregnancy is different and there is nothing wrong with natural. However, that being said every pregnancy comes with its own set of risks for complications (and these are usually watched for very carefully in first time pregnancies). There is a lot of research that goes into the practice of medicine with guidelines being updated constantly to support ongoing patient care. A better researched and better worded video is what I would have liked to see, especially as you have such a large platform (and possibly young impressionable viewers), and giving out misleading information could potentially be dangerous and harmful depending on the circumstances. Colleague here - whole heartedly agree. Although I have to say, this is not the first time they put up content that is poorly researched and far from eloquent (e.g. Mimi's gender equality video, where she was so uninformed on the subject she actually googled whether gender inequality exists...). My issue with Mimi and Alex is that they never honour their viewers by responding to our comments on their more controversial videos. I'm pretty sure that despite the upheaval here in the comment section regarding their mockery of the medical profession, they are NEVER going to address it head-on. Shame.
Yeah, I think they need to address this or take this video down! But as you said they never will . Agreed. Doctors say 'medical' things, they're doctors. They are as 'precise' as possible in the advent of tech and are not commoditizing babies by suggesting past due is over due, rather they're protecting themselves from ppl who sue for things like 'nature' happining and saving lives -- 1,000 yrs ago, we had babies 'naturally' but we also lost lots of them naturally before medicine, which these two utilized.
I couldn't bother to watch your video. For two reasons 1. 55 minutes is far too long for a birth story. I have heard birth stories from countless women (I had my son nearly 4 months ago), and neither mine nor theres would have taken 55 minutes to tell. What self indulgent crap! 2. I have read the comments and I am appalled that you think you know more than healthcare professionals, and that you advocate going beyond the due date. For starters, the placenta does not work as well as it is should after 40 weeks. Secondly, childbirth is hard enough without trying to push out a "technically" two week old baby! C-sections are not the worst thing in the world, and we should be thankful that science had made them safer to do. Pushing out a child does not mean you have a stronger bond with them - what utter bullshit. I don't think I can say anything else that hasn't already been said!

ALL OF THIS. When anyone says "such and such" (breastfeeding, natural birth, etc) = a better bond with your baby and like, if you don't do it, you don't bond...I laugh so hard. Considering things like PPD and PPA/PPP exist (post-partum depression, anxiety, psychosis), sometimes you can't choose whether or not your bond, no matter what you do. And there are still moms who do everything on the list and end up killing their child or abandoning their child or getting the kiddo taken away. There is no set amount of rules for bonding with your kid. Just...oy. (sorry for the super down comment!)
Exactly! There are women watching this who have no choice but to have a c-section and the fact Mimi and Alex are telling them their bond isn't as strong is downright mean. They should have thought about what they were saying, because there are lots of pregnant women watching this. Melanie Harry True! I am a triplet so of course my mother had a c section, and we had the same connection even if she had a natural birth. My mom couldn't help it, Mimi and Alex are so rude and disrespectful to anyone who was born with a c section or even had a live birth with medication while they think that anyone who gave birth another way than natural is evil or bad.
Sorry as a doctor I just want to say that if I had a patient that SO willfully disregarded my advice that stems from 9 plus years of education I would be so frustrated. Please listen to us, doctors/nurses/midwives. We are experts in this field, we don't just research it for a couple months on the internet. We are intensely and thoroughly tested, and have many experiences in the field to draw our opinions and work from . People like Mimi and Alex are so stubborn in their beliefs to the point of it being dangerous. In the end you switched to public, you were put in a hospital bed rather than a tub, and you had the epidural. And came close to a c section. Everything you did not want. This could have been avoided if you were just induced when your midwives suggested. You made the experience much more difficult than it needed to be, and now you are promoting that kind of behaviour. Please listen to your Heath care professionals folks. This situation thankfully turned out okay but the reason that the number of stillbirths and death of mothers during pregnancy has gone down in the last couple of decades is because of the scientific innovations and new methods that have developed allowing this to happen. Listen to what we say. It saves lives.
I really respect and appreciate that you include nurses and midwives, so many people really underestimate how much nurses and midwives know and how efficient they are at supporting women and promoting better health care. There is NO substitute for the centuries worth of knowledge and experience that comprises Nursing and Midwifery.We need more solidarity between physicians, Nurses, and midwives!

I think you may have been more educated if you went to Ante natal classes rather than relying on Google. We all know there is a lot of mistruth on the internet that is open to interpretation. At least things seem ok though one can never be sure. Many infant problems and child development issues are not evident until the child fails to reach developmental milestones in the future. A slow fetal heart rate in utero is nothing to chill about. It is an abnormal heart rate, indicative that oxygenation is not as it should be. It is disturbing that Alex belittled the staff, telling them to chill, implying that they were just fidgeting when they were doing their job and managing the situation. The real skill in the obstetric profession is identifying the abnormal and using best and safest practice to achieve optimal outcomes. Medicine and midwifery requires higher learning and skill than this couple gave the staff credit for. We have a duty to explain risk factors and it is not done to annoy people as Alex portrayed. Also you will find doctors, midwives and nurses are attracted to these occupations because they are the 'carers' of the world and yes they do have to make a living. I'm just thankful that the vast majority of people are far more respectful of knowledge and education than this couple. I worry about what is coming next on this channel. Why we shouldn't immunize our children and novice parents who know best and everything and parenting perhaps. Oh they have so much to learn!
You two are completely irresponsible advocating people go beyond their "due date". Your research on does not replace the experience and knowledge of medical professionals and insurance companies. Obviously if the insurance company cuts off the physician's coverage at 42 weeks it's because the risk goes up and insurance doesn't want to pay out the increase in lawsuits. We have medical interventions to reduce infant mortality and so far that is working. Being reckless and irresponsible is not something to promote and brag about on your videos. Wow they are very... Stupid. Like I'm all for natural birth but to literally trying to stall nurses and delay medical help when their heartbeats dropping is just ridiculous. And what's the shit with bonding and c sections. My daughter was born via c section and our bond is incredible. Also for the record my c section birth was beautiful and my recovery was pain free.

The nurses were probably under stress because they were dealing with two morons making out with each other and expecting some sort of spa atmosphere during such difficult circumstances. I understand wanting to avoid a C-section, but there is nothing wrong with that having to happen if the baby's health is in question. Bonding comes from love and support everyday with your child. Not what happens on a day your child will never remember. Get your priorities in order. And I'm sorry, but premature babies are born everyday BEFORE they are ready. Unpredictable things happen. That doesn't mean that the baby was destined to be born that day. Thank God for doctors and modern medicine that save these babies born before "they were ready."
I'm sorry but I couldn't watch the whole thing. you guys are crazy doubting the doctors/midwives who have been doing this for years. I'm glad You were lucky you and your baby are fine, but like someone else said here, people usually don't worry about the serious risks until you actually know someone who has been through it. one of our acquaintances' baby died from still birth at 42 weeks, "she wanted everything natural" (which isn't bad up to a certain point) Your insurance isn't crazy for telling you the have a time limit because they're the ones who have to deal with paying for the complications of something that you chose. I'm sorry if I sound judgemental, thats not what im attempting. I honestly wish you the best but I can no longer follow you on social media. I just keep shaking my head more and more at the things you guys do and say. I'm a mom too and I can't imagine the idea of risking my babies because of being so strict on a lifestyle. best of luck.

I'm only voicing my opinion for the young women who follow them and want to follow their path. please be careful. In the United States today, about 15 women die in pregnancy or childbirth per 100,000 live births. That’s way too many, but a century ago it was more than 600 women per 100,000 births. I try to respect everyones beliefs but the fact Alex (?) "planned" the birth from 9am-12pm caused me to guffaw uncontrollably for a few mins. Another idea that was pure comic relief was they're having a painless birth. Painless birth is a rarity. In comparison a birthmother's probabilities of having birthing difficulties are higher. Yet the trust they had in nature making it painless & easy was beyond logic to me. "Nature" & simply allowing the body to do what it does is the reason for higher birth & mother mortality rates in countries like India or even our own privileged 1st world counties history. Something I do agree with is the emphasis on due date. Different countries have different ideas on the birthing time-table so some wiggle room does exists. In some cases the rigidity of the "due date" is an unwarranted pressure. However, only the medical professionals can make that decision on a case by case basis. While watching this video Alex in particular came across as extremely arrogant. No amount of reading material can compare to the knowledge gained by formal studies. Even a first year medical student is more knowledgable than a well informed first time parent. To pretend to know best is a disservice to yourself, your s/o, & newborn.
I've never been pregnant yet, and please someone explain to me how exactly does pushing a baby out of your tiny hole and being in a ton of pain bonds you with your baby? Weren't the previous 9 months enough to bond? Do mothers who had a c-section reject their children because they never bonded? Is dying in pain is really a better thing to do as a mother than agree to a peaceful caesarian?
lavenza I do think there is something special about birthing your baby however in case of an emergency I think we are so lucky to have the option of c section.
One thing I noticed about alex and mimi is that they try to portray a "perfect life" from their Instagrams to their RUclips vlogs. After watching this i just realized how annoying that could be for viewers, because they aren't really seeing the down side in your relationship. I'm normally a person who would never intervene and criticise others, but, as I was watching the video, I couldn't help but notice that everything your chose before and during labour was to make you comfortable and relaxed and not your baby. You didn't want to get an epidural or a c-section because you read negative things about them... well, there are definitely no negative consequences for the baby with an epidural or a c-section! on the contrary, they can prove to be healthy choices for you and your baby. I felt like everything you two cared for throughout the whole thing was keeping Mimi calm and pampered and relaxed, which is shocking because Mimi is a grown-up, healthy woman who can handle anything while your baby should have been your number 1 prority.

This is not a judgement comment, but merely an educational one. I'm a postpartum registered nurse, and through studies and my nursing courses along with valid research on and several nursing journals beyond 40 weeks that the baby is in the womb progesterone (the hormone that sustains a pregnancy) begins to decline which declines the function of the placenta which is the only way of oxygen, and nutrition to the baby. Post 40 weeks the placenta's functions starts to decrease; therefore, the baby can lack many things the placenta gives to the baby, the one of most importance is oxygen and blood which can have detrimental effects to the baby. Working with doctors and other medical professionals with laboring and postpartum patients, there will never be a time that a medical professional will steer parents to a direction that will harm the baby or the mother. We are there to keep both mom and baby safe. Had I been the nurse that a dad told me to chill and let her sleep while I saw the baby's heart rate decline, which is called a late deceleration at the mid-late part of a contraction, I would've disregarded his comment and immediately went to her to check her and the baby, because that is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY. late Decels are an immediate threat to the baby it means that there is placental insufficiency which is a fancy way of saying there is lack of oxygen getting to the baby. That is in most cases why women will get an emergency c-section. I'm not any way judging these two, but like most comments, medical professionals, like myself go through years of training and research, and specialize with testing and licensing exams to help prevent error and save lives, and in most cases should not be questioned in an emergency situation, which seems to be what this case was.
Yes!!! finally some facts and education. I am scared to know how they feel about vaccination, she had mentioned in one of her videos how vaccinations can cause anxiety and depression. They also don't believe in car safety. They carried they baby in a swaddle sling in a moving vehicle. Poor baby.

If only you know the dangers of vaccinations and all what is being hidden from the public. I refuse to vaccinate my child and I'm so sorry for all those who follow "medical advise" without doing their own research first and actually making an informed decision. Most doctors don't even know much about vaccines. It's honestly a big joke what they learn in school vs what vaccines actually entail. My husband is in med school and they don't cover much at all with regards to this. Normal labour is said to be between 38-42 weeks. After 42weeks baby can go into distress but it can be monitored. There are more chances of baby passing meconium (stools) after 42weeks. These are not society standards but proven statistics.

Your view that the healthcare industry is just a business is very interesting and uneducated. Insurance exists for medical professionals because their job is risky and the outcomes are not always what you would hope. They come in contact with people from all walks of life, and sometimes these people do not have good intentions. People complain and try to sue often. There are people who make a living out of complaining about a healthcare professional with lies or exaggerated truths, only for the compensation they have a chance of receiving at the end. And guess who pays for it all? The professional's insurance. Do you think their insurance comes free of cost? NO! They pay from their own pocket for various different memberships annually, two being the General Medical Council and Medical Defence Union, which provides them with insurance and legal aid here in the UK. They are not allowed to practice without memberships to certain organisations so they can protect themselves, whilst protecting you and your family. There are other organisations which also provide insurance, some are cheaper than others. Therefore, the insurance covers different scenarios... With a pregnancy over 42 weeks being incredibly risky, fewer companies will cover this. A lot of people are frustrated with this video, and rightfully so, but you have not yet addressed it. I am interested to hear what you have to say for yourselves after offending many healthcare professionals around the world.

Honestly, the whole idea that doctors are businessmen is very very wrong. I personally know two doctors, one of them is my cousin and another is my best friend, and they both once told me that you have to be a complete sociopath to look at a suffering human being and think about money you're gonna get from treating him. Of course there are sociopaths in medical field, but to generalize like they do is horribly horribly unjust.
As someone who is pregnant myself, I don`t want to go over 42 weeks. There are a lot of complications that can occur from this. I don`t think what you`re putting out there is correct or right. Child birthing is a life or death situation for mother and baby. Yes, you can google statistics all you want. But google does not trump a licensed, educated, and practicing doctor. What you did was very risky. Congrats on your baby & glad you didn`t have the complications that could have come from what you`re pushing out there.

Same risk on both sides and you are in no position to judge as every pregnancy is different. MartikaScotland Who is judging? I just said its not wise to push this type of information out as if you're a licensed doctor. There are people so hell bent on a "natural hypnobirth" that they will ignore medical advice from their doctors. And that is never something to take lightly. There are natural ways to induce labor rather than sitting there way past your due date putting yourself and baby at risk. There is a reason why you get a due date and why you shouldn`t go so far past it.
nancy A EXACTLY, i wonder if they researched that baby starts having actual bowl movements after a certain amount of weeks that can cause infection for both mommy and baby, or that the placenta can stop functioning. They had a lucky case with this pregnancy. But some people will see this and turn to google rather than their actual doctor.

You know, I waited almost a week before coming back to this video and responding. It took me a week to try to properly formulate my thoughts and express why this video upset me so much. Firstly, i would like to say congratulations on Alexa's birth; she's beautiful, and I wish her a lifetime of happiness and health. That being said... I agree that a woman should have a say in the type of healthcare she receives. Mimi, you had an extremely easy pregnancy, which you're extremely lucky about, but I witnessed how much your confidence that the fact that you didn't experience many complications during the pregnancy increased your disregard for the medical system. I remember one of your Q and As, where Alex made a comment about many pregnancy symptoms being socially constructed into being a norm. "Ask yourself, are you REALLY feeling that way?" He asked. I remember thinking about how ridiculous that was. I mean, there are certain stereotypical symptoms associated with a cold too... would you doubt that someone saying they had a runny nose had a cold? Would you say "hey... doctors and medicine want you to believe you have a cold in order for them to make money"? I remember just thinking how ridiculous it was. I agree that medicine, and our education system needs work; but dude it's a continuously evolving thing!! Of course childbirth as depicted in movies might be exaggerated, but that doesn't mean it's entirely fabricated! Women go through this all the time!! The other thing that I find so amazingly stupid was how many red flags you guys had about the potential difficult labour that you ignored... your midwives, who's job it is to assist in natural deliveries, told you MULTIPLE times that you were going a risky route. Doctors told you you were going a risky route. You refused to listen to anyone who disagreed with your birth plan but had your best intentions in mind, and I find that incredible. Incredibly arrogant and incredibly stupid for two self-proclaimed educated and critical thinking people. Yes, I agree that scheduling c-sections instead of going through natural labour may be a bad thing. But when a doctor tells you that you and/or your baby are in critical condition... you've got to friggen listen! You were LUCKY. Your child is here, and healthy, and safe because you were lucky that the team that was there with you during your labour was so educated. The nurses were "fidgeting around" in order to make sure that you, Mimi, and Alexa were okay. I can't believe how arrogant and closed-minded two people who claim to have worldly views about the world can be. Why don't you go to my country of origin, Haiti, and see what it's like to give birth without modern medicine readily available to you. Don't take that for granted... I hope that as Alexa grows up you make decisions that are less based on your self-pride and more based on actual informed and non-cryptic and arrogant decisions.

Consider yourself lucky, you have no idea the amount of experience OBs and mifwifes and RNs in womens and children area speak from. Keep your child in.. sure have her swallow the very thick mec the very common occurance lol or rotting cord... aging placenta.. oh and the risk of amniotic emboli to your veryself
I had to have an emergency c-section because of my baby's heart rate dropping. I had no trouble bonding with my little girl and although the recovery was tough, I am glad that the doctors did what they had to do to save my baby's life. You both have a holier-than-thou attitude that frankly makes you look arrogant and ignorant. Please "do your research" before you spread information that can put people's lives at risk.
I'm really sorry, but as a med student I cannot like this video. I usually like all your videos, I'm all about eating natural, organic foods, living a healthy lifestyle etc. but I cannot support someone being so ignorant about themselves and their baby's health. It hurts, knowing what could have happend to that beautiful baby, that luckily survived and is well. If you ever choose to have another baby, I hope you will not be as ignorant as this time. You talk about everything that could go wrong when on epidural and having a C-section, but clearly you do not understand that these procedures save lives, not destroy them, so the benefits outweigh the risks. I don't know what kind of research you could have done in the past months, to form such opinions, clearly misguided. But doing 8+ years of education plus having a ton of practical actual EXPERIENCE that doctors, nurses and midwifes have, it seems strange you believe you could have gained and disregarded all that knowledge in mere months (or even years) of amateur research. I'm happy everything turned out well, and I'm sure you thought you're doing what's best, Alexa's a very cute little baby girl :)
thank you for writing this. I'm a med student as well, and I see it all the time that people don't see the difference between doing a c-section and/or induction just because they/the mother-to-be or anyone feels like it, and having it done in order to protect the baby. Trust me, natural birth means less work for a doctor than doing a c-section, so it's not like they're doing it for fun or out of convenience. And we spend way more time learning, researching and practicing these things than anyone can in a few months.
Yup lol and talks about how induction is so unnatural but she took the epidural which is so unnatural. Nothing is wrong with the epidural I took it when I had my baby. I just wish they would have more of an open mind and stop acting like know it Alls
You guys need to be super careful how you give advice. What works for you, may not work for other people. At the end of the day you aren't medical professionals!! Also some of the things you said can be quite insulting to some people, for example, some people don't have a choice and need to have an eipdural.

This is NOT insulting at all it's beautiful! They are real. The only way you or anyone would be insulted is if they have personal sadness with their birth and still hold that emotion, if that's the case see a counselor or talk to a friend on those emotions 😊
But why don't they do their research before putting this video up. They have so much power on youtube and can actually influence other viewers from not taking proper medical advice.
I usually agree about society putting us into averages, but what makes labor and delivery unique is the fact that what you're putting at risk is a real baby. So when we're talking about the likelihood of these adverse outcomes happening to you if you are post-dates, yes the statistic may seem small to you but when you weigh that against death of your baby as an outcome then it puts it all into perspective. Villainizing doctors won't help. Doctors don't like working with insurance companies either, but some of the highest malpractice insurance is paid by Ob's because of the simple reality that they are some of the most sued. I lean towards using midwives too, but you have to be reasonable.
It somehow feels like Mimi is being bullied into thinking the way Alex wants her to... "I wanted a home birth...lets not go to hospital yet...I don't want a csection etc" says a man... a fricking man! If that was my husband I'd call a cab and leave him at home and go do it myself...sory.. Love you Mimi but this was just uncomfortable to listen to :(
I don't know what i find worse: his behavior or the fact that she doesn't rebel against it. If my husband had behaved like this during the birth of our daughter, he would have got the divorce papers right after that.

Yeah, Now that you say that, I start it to think about it too. HOPEFULLY, they will vaccine the baby. I started getting a weird feeling about this pregnancy since the first video when they said more about "this human being" than my baby. I hate to be cynical about this especially because it involves a baby and is the most innocent thing but this pregnancy although an amazing personal journey for Mimi , they seem to have cashed on it as well by attracting so many new moms and moms to be. Pregnancy updates are very much fun but a daily update for such an intimate thing ? Intimate Videos of them dancing out for public viewing ? It's too desperate. There's nothing wrong with sharing happiness with the world but I think it's kinda classless to share the intimate details with the whole world. I guess when you constantly need validation from people who you have never met before telling you your relationship is awesome is a sign of extreme self-esteem and faith in your relationship. Bonding? vaginal or c-section birth has nothing to do with bonding. You don't bond less with your child or your child less with you just because you have a c-section.

That's the indication that the risk of pregnancy at 42 weeks is extremely high! It's too risky to insure because these companies don't want to pay for malpractice suits. I agree with this comment. Many things that Mimi and Alex talk about I do agree with. However, Insurance has to be there because it's the doctor's responsibility. Imagine a world without it? Just because the doctor doesn't have insurance over 42+ weeks and they were told to find another doctor isn't the doctor's fault. That's what the insurance covers, risks. The doc cannot immediately snap their fingers and change their insurance just for Mimi's baby. Some doctor's don't want to be involved in high risk deliveries. Although society says 'this' and 'that' here has to be rules laid out for responsibility of risks in situations like this. These doctor's know statistics that probably aren't on the internet for the public because the doctors/nurses themselves see what happens and deliver babies daily. Pretty sure that's what years and years of schooling is for. Thank goodness their baby came when it did and not any later, everything is fine. She is a beautiful girl!

I had a c section and am very bonded with my baby - I don't think it's fair to say such negative things about c sections. Of course it's not everyone's ideal circumstance but it doesn't cause you to not bond with your baby.

They are educated and own their own businesses too but are so protective of me and would never put my life even CLOSE to danger. I felt uncomfortable watching your video. Student nurse here... if they only knew how bad it could get after 42+ weeks. It's no exaggeration, the baby can begin to pass meconium (poop) in the womb and it could turn into a snow-ball effect.
Sierra Jameson I don't think so, that's very, very common. Meconium is one of the dangers, but also, after 42 weeks the placenta slowly starts to deteriorate, and the baby slowly begins to receive less and less oxygen and nutrients. I'm all for giving birth in birth centers instead of hospitals (like Mimi and Alex planned to do), and I'm pro home births given the right circumstances (and provided the mother has a nurse-midwife by her side, who can detect signs of something not being right long before it becomes an emergency), but doctors exist for a reason, ignoring their advice and dismissing their worries seems very arrogant and stubborn. When your pride comes before the wellbeing of your child, maybe you should rethink your priorities...

This is my first time watching this couple, It's quite strange that my first video of them this monstrosity. 1. they are so pretentious, it is fine to be in pain, and it's called a contraction for a reason. 2. Alex (the guy) he is so controlling, you would swear he was sharing the pain with her, how is he giving advice about birthing. 3. This lady asked for a c-section three times, and this guy kept denying her, she was the one in pain, this whole dictating of how the baby is born should be decided by the person physically pushing out the baby out of her vagina. 4. That was such negligence on their part, the baby could have died. 5. that's very ignorant to think that you need to physically push out your baby in order to bond with your child...(Adoption?)

I am a medical professional and I would like to add that the vast majority of us do not go into this profession to make money or see patients as a business. We risk our careers daily, which in my case took over 9 years of post graduate education to achieve, trying to not only do the best for our patients according to the guidelines set out for us by decades of research, but deal with patient preference to find a satisfactory outcome for all parties. If the risks you chose to take against medical advice, which by the way is not based on one retrospective trial from years ago, but cumulative ongoing trails, resulted in harm to the baby or you, the doctor would still have to take full responsibility for that if they chose to continue caring for you. The nurse that was 'fidgeting' was doing all she could to not miss a critical deterioration in the baby's or your condition. Hospitals are not a place to relax. They are a high risk, high pressure environment for doctors as well, but medical intervention has reduced maternal and baby mortality rates to such an extent that people may have forgotten what a risky undertaking it is. I really hope you carefully research whether to vaccinate your child, as that sole intervention has saved millions of children who would have died of 'natural' infections. Wishing you and your lovely family the very best and I am so happy for you all.
Pain-free birth is possible...and I honestly don't know why it happened to me. First birth (daughter Jessica) was 40 years ago :) My labor lasted 6 hours and the nurse was rather angry at me because I didn't know when I was having a contraction. Second birth (daughter Angela) was 37 years ago. I didn't know I was in active labor and went in to the doctor's office for my weekly visit. She told me to go to the hospital...and I had Angie 2 hours later. Many people think I just don't remember the pain...but that's silly. Back in 1976 and 1979, they did not offer pain relief like an epidural. Natural was in! I feel blessed...but really, a healthy baby and mom is ALL that matters!! Enjoy every second with your little one!
I haven't finished the video yet, so I can only comment on this part. Doctors have liability insurance because not everyone is as understanding and forgiving as Mimi and Alex. Their liability insurance is what restricted this physician from covering you after 42 weeks. It's not her choice to say no past that day. You would have put her entire career on the line had she agreed to keep you under her care. If something had gone wrong, even if you hadn't sued her, your insurance could have based on complications with Mimi after the birth so they don't have to pay. Insurance companies find the best place to get money and go for it. It's not the physicians fault, and I'm disappointed you weren't more understanding of the two way street that is healthcare. As clinicians, they must watch out for their patients and also themselves, they are humans too and you should understand where she was coming from (even if she didn't present her case well).
I vote that people can go over 42 weeks, if they agree to never hold the clincians, hospital or anyone else liable for their decision. And sign a contract never to sue.

Same here. It really threw me off. /: And the fact that they kept saying "natural birth" & "C-section" like a C-section isn't natural & some sort of bad thing. They're both ways of birth, birth is natural. They both have their pros & cons. Why are C-Sections & epidurals looked down on so much? And why are women so judgey about them? Like it's somehow "better" to make yourself suffer? Why do pregnant women feel like they have to do this & vaginal birth is some type of thing that makes you better than other pregnant women who get c-sections or have epidurals? I'll never get it. bceause c sections ARENT natural. Your body doesnt just naturally rip open from the stomach to take the baby out. and epidurals are chemicals that arent natural to help you not feel pain therefor its not a natural birth. You didnt see our ancestors giving birth through these methods before

I'm certainly glad mama and baby are well but, you know as well as I do if something went severely wrong the medical personnel would be the first to blame. People don't understand that we have to ask the personal questions and give the uncomfortable information they don't want to hear, not just to be mean and make them "nervous" but to document it was done and they understand possible circumstances, also because it's our job and we're committed to doing what's right for both parties involved
Also, if a thing works for you as a person, the experience cannot be translated into a generality. A lot of things could have gone wrong, good thing it didn't, it doesn't mean that for others it will be exactly the same as theirs.

I agree with you Chloe. It is odd that Alex was still trying to keep Mimi away from the epidural or c-section. She is the one feeling the pain of contractions (not waves, they ARE contractions) and if she wants to get the baby out that way, then so be it. It is her body and she is very capable of making her own decisions. Unless Mimi was unconscious and unable to make medical decisions for herself, there is no reason for Alex to keeping pushing Mimi into something that she can't do.
I couldn't keep watching. The risks are not exaggerated! People don't realize how common stillbirths are. As a mother who had a stillborn baby at 38 weeks, I don't appreciate anyone belittling the incredible loss we have experienced. You are so incredibly BLESSED to have a live healthy baby. The reason why the Drs. Have protocols is because of the high risks of stillbirth.
Hi Mimi i usually agree with most that you say, however as a medical student who has done my rotation in obstetrics I really have to disagree with you stance on 'overdue'.
Every week that you go over your baby is getting bigger and increasing the risk that they will not be able to get through the birth canal and so ending up you having an emergency section. Much better to be induced than an emergency section . I know you think it is all natural , however until you actually see a delivery come to an emergency you haven't really got a full idea. I dont really like the way your trying to imply it's about money because its not, the doctors have guidelines set for them about 42 weeks.
Also the reason why babies dont die in childbirth anymore is because of doctor intervention - especially when going overdue...
Eva Grace - thank you for the comment. Also I have to disagree with mimi when she said everywhere in the world they offer an induction at 39 weeks or pessary - they do not. With my first baby they wouldn't even touch me till I was over 40 weeks before they would consider doing a sweep and they surely wouldn't induce anyone unless they are at least 41 weeks with a good reason - however at 42 weeks you are overdue and you are risking your baby and having a natural delivery.

not only the baby gets big, but the placenta gets old and the risk for the baby gets higher and higher after the 42 weeks. There is A LOT of research that proves this.
I rarely ever comment. But as a doctor, who went to school for 8 years, took 6 different 8-9 hr board exams, additional 3 years of residency. Hearing you compare your "research" to the stress and hard work of those compiled years all the while being very degrading to doctors. The OB/GYN field is not an easy one, it takes passion and heart to do what these medical doctors do. They have the highest malpractice insurance, as much as you say oh you are choosing what you want now, if something goes wrong, the parents never blame themselves, the blame always goes to the doctor. There are risks and benefits to either side (induction and waiting for natural progression). At 42 weeks the risks outweigh the benefits. I am so happy that everything went well you guys and you have a beautiful healthy baby. But I have seen when things go very wrong, it ruins families. I have been in a room where the midwife kept telling the mom it was ok to keep trying for natural birth,2 hours later she was in the OR with not the best outcome. Yes childbirth is a natural process. However, before medical advances the mortality (both maternal and infant) were twice as high as they are now. I wonder how we as a society got here? By first time parents doing "research"? Something to think about before you roll your eyes at the mention of a doctor. Be informed, get involved in your own personal healthcare but don't insinuate that doctors don't know what they are telling you and that they are running a business, to run a business would be an easier undertaking. I can't!

Completely agree reality is until you have close friends and family or yourself experienced a stillborn due to being over due it's not something everyone women may understand. Because it happens . I had a baby died after 2mths even since then my anxiety increases so I don't like going near 42wks. You have to experience to understand . By all means comes to 42wks but understand risk exsit With that.

I don't know anything medical related but my daughter was a week late and I remember wanting to wait so I could have the whole natural experience from water breaking to dilating without being induced and my doctor was like nope, sorry but that is dangerous for your baby. After the 40th week hit she gave me just a week and scheduled an induction.

Actually, she is right about the risks of an induction being higher than the risks associated when going past your due date. I was a total mess when my doctor told me that they wouldn't even consider an induction until I went past 42 weeks. People & the internet kept saying how dangerous it was. But when I actually looked up the studies (I wanted to show my doctor how dangerous it really was -HAHA), I could only find studies that showed how much healthier it was for both mother & baby when babies (who've received proper natale care and are in good health) come at their own pace. Keep in mind that medical schools in different countries teach things differently and America (where they are most likely to pressure you into having an unnecessary induction) has a ridiculously high rate of infant death compared to other countries.
I wish I'd seen this video before giving birth. Definitely listen to your doctor, but also do your own research and let him/her know about any concerns you might have.

I'm a third year medical student as well, and that's the problem, people should do their research but they should also ear the doctors and they can't and won't make a decision for you, they make decisions with you, an informed decision.

As a nurse, you are the couple every nurse dreads having. The people that believe in any situation they know more than the professionals and in turn jeopardize you and the baby's safety. My sentiments exactly. You can imagine the eye rolling and exasperation in the staff room from those dealing with the know it all couple who describe the work and observation of the OB staff as fidgeting and who stand corrected on what is best after having read a few articles. I imagine there will be ongoing expertise on this channel as the novice parents tell us all what is the best way to parent. As an OB professional I found this video disturbing and judging by the huge amount of negative comment, particularly from those with higher understanding, I am not alone. Yes your baby arrived safely in the end, but there are no guarantees of normal child development when neonates are excessively stressed, for whatever reason, in any labour. May I also say, that contraction is a medical term, wave is not!

Just like Mimi said, natural birth IS painful and in the end, she was asking for the drugs. Typical for those that "plan" a natural birth. This is the epitome of why a birth plan should not exist. The doctor refusing to see you as a patient after 42 weeks has nothing to do with "making money like a business." If it was about money, they would've continued seeing you anyway so they could be paid. They refused to see you because THEIR insurance will not cover *them* in the ever-increasing likelihood something goes wrong because it is so risky past week 42. This is thoroughly backed by years of medical research, this isn't a marketing ploy to extract more money.

Exactly. Their advice is based on feeling, emotions, and thought. But the fact of the matter is, while these things can be very valuable in many aspects of life, science far outweighs these thing --especially when it comes to medicine. Please, expectant mothers, listen to your trained medical professionals over your RUclips idols and Dulas. Not that Dulas aren't awesome -- but they aren't as educated scientifically as medial doctors.

Yes, which means in her world: leave a comment but don't criticize me. If you do, I will delete it. There were so many comments which criticized what they were saying but were written in a very respectful way. Most of them were deleted. This is such an disrespectful behavior towards their followers. It's sad to realize that these videos are not about inspiring other people, it's only about making money!!!
And the sad part is, Alex claims throughout the video that it's the medical professionals that are in it for the financial gain. You know who stands to gain zero funds, and lose their medical licence? (which they spent half a million dollars in tuition + student loans working for, and spent over a decade in school for) - Doctors like myself, if we don't take the actions necessary to save the life of the mother and baby. I would never recommend a c-section to my patients, if that is not what they wished for. However, if your baby enters a risk zone where the benefits of performing the surgery, outweigh the risk of newborn mortality. You WILL get a c-section. It is not my choice, and it is not yours - it's what is in best interest of the BABY and MOTHER who are my ONLY priorities.

Hey Mimi! congratulations on your beautiful girl, she is adorable! I am so happy for you, I just wish that you guys would be a little bit more careful with the way you express your ideas because you do influence many people, specially young couples. Even though you had everything monitored and thankfully everything went well with Alexa's birth, the risks increase drastically after 42 weeks and the doctor's advice should not be ignored. A young woman was convinced that everything had to be natural and refused to induce labor, I met her because in Dental school I did an internship with disabled children... Due to the lack of oxygen during birth the child had permanent brain damage. She was a beautiful girl, that will never experience the world as she should. Why give the chance? It is better to just find a good doctor and trust her/his knowledge.

I'm just annoyed at the lack of humility, specially Alex, saying he basically took charge, that he thought of delivering himself... Mimi was in excruciating pain, the baby wasn't in the right position and bad things could have happened without the staff. Those bad things are also a part of nature, a very common one before modern medicine. So please don't act like you knew better and that nature's way is the best way because nature also kills. Please accept that you were LUCKY to have been able to (kinda) stick to your birth plan. Be humble. You don't always know best. And I really hope you meant "we" when you repeatedly said "I don't want a c-section".

My heart rate dropped at birth and I NEARLY DIED.There were like 50 doctors in the room. WTF, Alex? Hearts beat for a reason. At birth, they beat fast. Or they SHOULD, anyway. Both Alexa and I are lucky to be here, and be healthy too - but that's not to say we weren't, at some point, in danger.

I rarely ever comment. But as a doctor, who went to school for 8 years, took 6 different 8-9 hr board exams, additional 3 years of residency. Hearing you compare your "research" to the stress and hard work of those compiled years all the while being very degrading to doctors. The OB/GYN field is not an easy one, it takes passion and heart to do what these medical doctors do. They have the highest malpractice insurance, as much as you say oh you are choosing what you want now, if something goes wrong, the parents never blame themselves, the blame always goes to the doctor. There are risks and benefits to either side (induction and waiting for natural progression). At 42 weeks the risks outweigh the benefits. I am so happy that everything went well you guys and you have a beautiful healthy baby. But I have seen when things go very wrong, it ruins families. I have been in a room where the midwife kept telling the mom it was ok to keep trying for natural birth,2 hours later she was in the OR with not the best outcome. Yes childbirth is a natural process. However, before medical advances the mortality (both maternal and infant) were twice as high as they are now. I wonder how we as a society got here? By first time parents doing "research"? Something to think about before you roll your eyes at the mention of a doctor. Be informed, get involved in your own personal healthcare but don't insinuate that doctors don't know what they are telling you and that they are running a business, to run a business would be an easier undertaking. I can't!

+Mozzarellab3lla very easy to have a strong opinion when you're not the one in labour. My obstetrician told me about a couple he took care of and they decided they didn't want to have an epidural. The big day came and the mother was so desperate for an epidural, but because they made a decision beforehand, the husband refused to let her have one. My ob basically says, the only birth plan you need is to get to the hospital in time to push. Everything else is unpredictable.

After 20 hours of labour I ended up having a c-section because this was best for my baby! Speaking as a medical professional (and a mother) I was saddened to see so much mis-information (and statements bordering on mockery of the medical profession) in this video.
Every pregnancy is different and there is nothing wrong with natural. However, that being said every pregnancy comes with its own set of risks for complications (and these are usually watched for very carefully in first time pregnancies). There is a lot of research that goes into the practice of medicine with guidelines being updated constantly to support ongoing patient care.
A better researched and better worded video is what I would have liked to see, especially as you have such a large platform (and possibly young impressionable viewers), and giving out misleading information could potentially be dangerous and harmful depending on the circumstances.

Colleague here - whole heartedly agree. Although I have to say, this is not the first time they put up content that is poorly researched and far from eloquent (e.g. Mimi's gender equality video, where she was so uninformed on the subject she actually googled whether gender inequality exists...). My issue with Mimi and Alex is that they never honour their viewers by responding to our comments on their more controversial videos. I'm pretty sure that despite the upheaval here in the comment section regarding their mockery of the medical profession, they are NEVER going to address it head-on. Shame.

They are as 'precise' as possible in the advent of tech and are not commoditizing babies by suggesting past due is over due, rather they're protecting themselves from ppl who sue for things like 'nature' happining and saving lives -- 1,000 yrs ago, we had babies 'naturally' but we also lost lots of them naturally before medicine, which these two utilized.

I couldn't bother to watch your video. For two reasons
1. 55 minutes is far too long for a birth story. I have heard birth stories from countless women (I had my son nearly 4 months ago), and neither mine nor theres would have taken 55 minutes to tell. What self indulgent crap!
2. I have read the comments and I am appalled that you think you know more than healthcare professionals, and that you advocate going beyond the due date. For starters, the placenta does not work as well as it is should after 40 weeks. Secondly, childbirth is hard enough without trying to push out a "technically" two week old baby!
C-sections are not the worst thing in the world, and we should be thankful that science had made them safer to do. Pushing out a child does not mean you have a stronger bond with them - what utter bullshit.

ALL OF THIS. When anyone says "such and such" (breastfeeding, natural birth, etc) = a better bond with your baby and like, if you don't do it, you don't bond...I laugh so hard. Considering things like PPD and PPA/PPP exist (post-partum depression, anxiety, psychosis), sometimes you can't choose whether or not your bond, no matter what you do. And there are still moms who do everything on the list and end up killing their child or abandoning their child or getting the kiddo taken away. There is no set amount of rules for bonding with your kid. Just...oy. (sorry for the super down comment!)

Sorry as a doctor I just want to say that if I had a patient that SO willfully disregarded my advice that stems from 9 plus years of education I would be so frustrated. Please listen to us, doctors/nurses/midwives. We are experts in this field, we don't just research it for a couple months on the internet. We are intensely and thoroughly tested, and have many experiences in the field to draw our opinions and work from . People like Mimi and Alex are so stubborn in their beliefs to the point of it being dangerous. In the end you switched to public, you were put in a hospital bed rather than a tub, and you had the epidural. And came close to a c section. Everything you did not want. This could have been avoided if you were just induced when your midwives suggested. You made the experience much more difficult than it needed to be, and now you are promoting that kind of behaviour. Please listen to your Heath care professionals folks. This situation thankfully turned out okay but the reason that the number of stillbirths and death of mothers during pregnancy has gone down in the last couple of decades is because of the scientific innovations and new methods that have developed allowing this to happen. Listen to what we say. It saves lives.

I think you may have been more educated if you went to Ante natal classes rather than relying on Google. We all know there is a lot of mistruth on the internet that is open to interpretation. At least things seem ok though one can never be sure. Many infant problems and child development issues are not evident until the child fails to reach developmental milestones in the future. A slow fetal heart rate in utero is nothing to chill about. It is an abnormal heart rate, indicative that oxygenation is not as it should be. It is disturbing that Alex belittled the staff, telling them to chill, implying that they were just fidgeting when they were doing their job and managing the situation. The real skill in the obstetric profession is identifying the abnormal and using best and safest practice to achieve optimal outcomes. Medicine and midwifery requires higher learning and skill than this couple gave the staff credit for. We have a duty to explain risk factors and it is not done to annoy people as Alex portrayed. Also you will find doctors, midwives and nurses are attracted to these occupations because they are the 'carers' of the world and yes they do have to make a living. I'm just thankful that the vast majority of people are far more respectful of knowledge and education than this couple. I worry about what is coming next on this channel. Why we shouldn't immunize our children and novice parents who know best and everything and parenting perhaps. Oh they have so much to learn!
You two are completely irresponsible advocating people go beyond their "due date". Your research on does not replace the experience and knowledge of medical professionals and insurance companies. Obviously if the insurance company cuts off the physician's coverage at 42 weeks it's because the risk goes up and insurance doesn't want to pay out the increase in lawsuits. We have medical interventions to reduce infant mortality and so far that is working. Being reckless and irresponsible is not something to promote and brag about on your videos. The nurses were probably under stress because they were dealing with two morons making out with each other and expecting some sort of spa atmosphere during such difficult circumstances.
I understand wanting to avoid a C-section, but there is nothing wrong with that having to happen if the baby's health is in question. Bonding comes from love and support everyday with your child. Not what happens on a day your child will never remember. Get your priorities in order.
And I'm sorry, but premature babies are born everyday BEFORE they are ready. Unpredictable things happen. That doesn't mean that the baby was destined to be born that day. Thank God for doctors and modern medicine that save these babies born before "they were ready."

I'm sorry but I couldn't watch the whole thing. you guys are crazy doubting the doctors/midwives who have been doing this for years. I'm glad You were lucky you and your baby are fine, but like someone else said here, people usually don't worry about the serious risks until you actually know someone who has been through it. one of our acquaintances' baby died from still birth at 42 weeks, "she wanted everything natural" (which isn't bad up to a certain point) Your insurance isn't crazy for telling you the have a time limit because they're the ones who have to deal with paying for the complications of something that you chose.

I try to respect everyones beliefs but the fact Alex (?) "planned" the birth from 9am-12pm caused me to guffaw uncontrollably for a few mins.
Another idea that was pure comic relief was they're having a painless birth. Painless birth is a rarity. In comparison a birthmother's probabilities of having birthing difficulties are higher. Yet the trust they had in nature making it painless & easy was beyond logic to me. "Nature" & simply allowing the body to do what it does is the reason for higher birth & mother mortality rates in countries like India or even our own privileged 1st world counties history.
Something I do agree with is the emphasis on due date. Different countries have different ideas on the birthing time-table so some wiggle room does exists. In some cases the rigidity of the "due date" is an unwarranted pressure. However, only the medical professionals can make that decision on a case by case basis.
While watching this video Alex in particular came across as extremely arrogant. No amount of reading material can compare to the knowledge gained by formal studies. Even a first year medical student is more knowledgable than a well informed first time parent. To pretend to know best is a disservice to yourself, your s/o, & newborn.

Weren't the previous 9 months enough to bond? Do mothers who had a c-section reject their children because they never bonded? lavenza I do think there is something special about birthing your baby however in case of an emergency I think we are so lucky to have the option of c section.

I'm normally a person who would never intervene and criticise others, but, as I was watching the video, I couldn't help but notice that everything your chose before and during labour was to make you comfortable and relaxed and not your baby. You didn't want to get an epidural or a c-section because you read negative things about them... well, there are definitely no negative consequences for the baby with an epidural or a c-section! on the contrary, they can prove to be healthy choices for you and your baby. I felt like everything you two cared for throughout the whole thing was keeping Mimi calm and pampered and relaxed, which is shocking because Mimi is a grown-up, healthy woman who can handle anything while your baby should have been your number 1 prority.

This is not a judgement comment, but merely an educational one. I'm a postpartum registered nurse, and through studies and my nursing courses along with valid research on and several nursing journals beyond 40 weeks that the baby is in the womb progesterone (the hormone that sustains a pregnancy) begins to decline which declines the function of the placenta which is the only way of oxygen, and nutrition to the baby. Post 40 weeks the placenta's functions starts to decrease; therefore, the baby can lack many things the placenta gives to the baby, the one of most importance is oxygen and blood which can have detrimental effects to the baby. Working with doctors and other medical professionals with laboring and postpartum patients, there will never be a time that a medical professional will steer parents to a direction that will harm the baby or the mother. We are there to keep both mom and baby safe. Had I been the nurse that a dad told me to chill and let her sleep while I saw the baby's heart rate decline, which is called a late deceleration at the mid-late part of a contraction, I would've disregarded his comment and immediately went to her to check her and the baby, because that is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY. late Decels are an immediate threat to the baby it means that there is placental insufficiency which is a fancy way of saying there is lack of oxygen getting to the baby. That is in most cases why women will get an emergency c-section. I'm not any way judging these two, but like most comments, medical professionals, like myself go through years of training and research, and specialize with testing and licensing exams to help prevent error and save lives, and in most cases should not be questioned in an emergency situation, which seems to be what this case was.

I'm a also a postpartum nurse and although I'm very pro natural I know when medical intervention is in my best interest. With that being said vaccines are a whole different ball game. If only you know the dangers of vaccinations and all what is being hidden from the public. I refuse to vaccinate my child and I'm so sorry for all those who follow "medical advise" without doing their own research first and actually making an informed decision. Most doctors don't even know much about vaccines. It's honestly a big joke what they learn in school vs what vaccines actually entail. My husband is in med school and they don't cover much at all with regards to this. Normal labour is said to be between 38-42 weeks. After 42weeks baby can go into distress but it can be monitored. There are more chances of baby passing meconium (stools) after 42weeks. These are not society standards but proven statistics.

Insurance exists for medical professionals because their job is risky and the outcomes are not always what you would hope. They come in contact with people from all walks of life, and sometimes these people do not have good intentions.
People complain and try to sue often. There are people who make a living out of complaining about a healthcare professional with lies or exaggerated truths, only for the compensation they have a chance of receiving at the end. And guess who pays for it all? The professional's insurance.
Do you think their insurance comes free of cost? NO! They pay from their own pocket for various different memberships annually, two being the General Medical Council and Medical Defence Union, which provides them with insurance and legal aid here in the UK. They are not allowed to practice without memberships to certain organisations so they can protect themselves, whilst protecting you and your family.
There are other organisations which also provide insurance, some are cheaper than others. Therefore, the insurance covers different scenarios... With a pregnancy over 42 weeks being incredibly risky, fewer companies will cover this.

Honestly, the whole idea that doctors are businessmen is very very wrong. I personally know two doctors, one of them is my cousin and another is my best friend, and they both once told me that you have to be a complete sociopath to look at a suffering human being and think about money you're gonna get from treating him. There are people so hell bent on a "natural hypnobirth" that they will ignore medical advice from their doctors. And that is never something to take lightly. There are natural ways to induce labor rather than sitting there way past your due date putting yourself and baby at risk. They had a lucky case with this pregnancy. But some people will see this and turn to google rather than their actual doctor.

Mimi, you had an extremely easy pregnancy, which you're extremely lucky about, but I witnessed how much your confidence that the fact that you didn't experience many complications during the pregnancy increased your disregard for the medical system. I remember one of your Q and As, where Alex made a comment about many pregnancy symptoms being socially constructed into being a norm. "Ask yourself, are you REALLY feeling that way?" He asked. I remember thinking about how ridiculous that was. I mean, there are certain stereotypical symptoms associated with a cold too... would you doubt that someone saying they had a runny nose had a cold? Would you say "hey... doctors and medicine want you to believe you have a cold in order for them to make money"?

The other thing that I find so amazingly stupid was how many red flags you guys had about the potential difficult labour that you ignored... your midwives, who's job it is to assist in natural deliveries, told you MULTIPLE times that you were going a risky route. Doctors told you you were going a risky route. You refused to listen to anyone who disagreed with your birth plan but had your best intentions in mind, and I find that incredible. Incredibly arrogant and incredibly stupid for two self-proclaimed educated and critical thinking people.
Yes, I agree that scheduling c-sections instead of going through natural labour may be a bad thing. But when a doctor tells you that you and/or your baby are in critical condition... you've got to friggen listen!
You were LUCKY. Your child is here, and healthy, and safe because you were lucky that the team that was there with you during your labour was so educated.
The nurses were "fidgeting around" in order to make sure that you, Mimi, and Alexa were okay. I can't believe how arrogant and closed-minded two people who claim to have worldly views about the world can be. Why don't you go to my country of origin, Haiti, and see what it's like to give birth without modern medicine readily available to you. Don't take that for granted... I hope that as Alexa grows up you make decisions that are less based on your self-pride and more based on actual informed and non-cryptic and arrogant decisions.

I had to have an emergency c-section because of my baby's heart rate dropping. I had no trouble bonding with my little girl and although the recovery was tough, I am glad that the doctors did what they had to do to save my baby's life. You both have a holier-than-thou attitude that frankly makes you look arrogant and ignorant. Please "do your research" before you spread information that can put people's lives at risk.
I'm really sorry, but as a med student I cannot like this video. I usually like all your videos, I'm all about eating natural, organic foods, living a healthy lifestyle etc. but I cannot support someone being so ignorant about themselves and their baby's health. It hurts, knowing what could have happend to that beautiful baby, that luckily survived and is well. If you ever choose to have another baby, I hope you will not be as ignorant as this time. You talk about everything that could go wrong when on epidural and having a C-section, but clearly you do not understand that these procedures save lives, not destroy them, so the benefits outweigh the risks. I don't know what kind of research you could have done in the past months, to form such opinions, clearly misguided. But doing 8+ years of education plus having a ton of practical actual EXPERIENCE that doctors, nurses and midwifes have, it seems strange you believe you could have gained and disregarded all that knowledge in mere months (or even years) of amateur research. I'm happy everything turned out well, and I'm sure you thought you're doing what's best, Alexa's a very cute little baby girl :)

thank you for writing this. I'm a med student as well, and I see it all the time that people don't see the difference between doing a c-section and/or induction just because they/the mother-to-be or anyone feels like it, and having it done in order to protect the baby. Trust me, natural birth means less work for a doctor than doing a c-section, so it's not like they're doing it for fun or out of convenience. And we spend way more time learning, researching and practicing these things than anyone can in a few months.

You guys need to be super careful how you give advice. What works for you, may not work for other people. At the end of the day you aren't medical professionals!! Also some of the things you said can be quite insulting to some people, for example, some people don't have a choice and need to have an eipdural.

This is NOT insulting at all it's beautiful! They are real. The only way you or anyone would be insulted is if they have personal sadness with their birth and still hold that emotion, if that's the case see a counselor or talk to a friend on those emotions 😊

I usually agree about society putting us into averages, but what makes labor and delivery unique is the fact that what you're putting at risk is a real baby. So when we're talking about the likelihood of these adverse outcomes happening to you if you are post-dates, yes the statistic may seem small to you but when you weigh that against death of your baby as an outcome then it puts it all into perspective. Villainizing doctors won't help. Doctors don't like working with insurance companies either, but some of the highest malpractice insurance is paid by Ob's because of the simple reality that they are some of the most sued. I lean towards using midwives too, but you have to be reasonable.

I hate to be cynical about this especially because it involves a baby and is the most innocent thing but this pregnancy although an amazing personal journey for Mimi , they seem to have cashed on it as well by attracting so many new moms and moms to be. Pregnancy updates are very much fun but a daily update for such an intimate thing ? Intimate Videos of them dancing out for public viewing ? It's too desperate. There's nothing wrong with sharing happiness with the world but I think it's kinda classless to share the intimate details with the whole world. I guess when you constantly need validation from people who you have never met before telling you your relationship is awesome is a sign of extreme self-esteem and faith in your relationship. Frankly, I'm just amazed by how confident you are in your ignorance. When the doctor told you she was not insured up to 42 weeks, you should have had your warning bells going off! That's the indication that the risk of pregnancy at 42 weeks is extremely high! It's too risky to insure because these companies don't want to pay for malpractice suits. You lot are really irresponsible. All this pseudo-scientific crap just pisses me off. Your attitude towards the healthcare practitioners was very condescending. How dare you? What degree and experience do you have that makes you think you can act like that? Thank goodness that it all turned out great for you! As far as I'm concerned, this is child endangerment!

I agree with this comment. Many things that Mimi and Alex talk about I do agree with. However, Insurance has to be there because it's the doctor's responsibility. Imagine a world without it? Just because the doctor doesn't have insurance over 42+ weeks and they were told to find another doctor isn't the doctor's fault. That's what the insurance covers, risks. The doc cannot immediately snap their fingers and change their insurance just for Mimi's baby. Some doctor's don't want to be involved in high risk deliveries. Although society says 'this' and 'that' here has to be rules laid out for responsibility of risks in situations like this. These doctor's know statistics that probably aren't on the internet for the public because the doctors/nurses themselves see what happens and deliver babies daily. Pretty sure that's what years and years of schooling is for. Thank goodness their baby came when it did and not any later, everything is fine. She is a beautiful girl!
Bolanle Adisa but he said that the doctor told them that her"the doctor's" insurance wont allow her to take mimi as a patient after 42 weeks ,, the doctor didn't even talk to them about their insurance, thats why they were surprised,, as they said before they have insurance , if they don't believe in benefits of insurance they wouldn't have one,, so the issue was about the doctor's attitude

I had a c section and am very bonded with my baby - I don't think it's fair to say such negative things about c sections. Of course it's not everyone's ideal circumstance but it doesn't cause you to not bond with your baby.

Student nurse here... if they only knew how bad it could get after 42+ weeks. It's no exaggeration, the baby can begin to pass meconium (poop) in the womb and it could turn into a snow-ball effect.

Meconium is one of the dangers, but also, after 42 weeks the placenta slowly starts to deteriorate, and the baby slowly begins to receive less and less oxygen and nutrients.
I'm all for giving birth in birth centers instead of hospitals (like Mimi and Alex planned to do), and I'm pro home births given the right circumstances (and provided the mother has a nurse-midwife by her side, who can detect signs of something not being right long before it becomes an emergency), but doctors exist for a reason, ignoring their advice and dismissing their worries seems very arrogant and stubborn.
When your pride comes before the wellbeing of your child, maybe you should rethink your priorities...

This is my first time watching this couple, It's quite strange that my first video of them this monstrosity. 1. they are so pretentious, it is fine to be in pain, and it's called a contraction for a reason. 2. Alex (the guy) he is so controlling, you would swear he was sharing the pain with her, how is he giving advice about birthing. 3. This lady asked for a c-section three times, and this guy kept denying her, she was the one in pain, this whole dictating of how the baby is born should be decided by the person physically pushing out the baby out of her vagina. 4. That was such negligence on their part, the baby could have died. 5. that's very ignorant to think that you need to physically push out your baby in order to bond with your child...(Adoption?)

Hi mimi. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am a medical professional and I would like to add that the vast majority of us do not go into this profession to make money or see patients as a business. We risk our careers daily, which in my case took over 9 years of post graduate education to achieve, trying to not only do the best for our patients according to the guidelines set out for us by decades of research, but deal with patient preference to find a satisfactory outcome for all parties. If the risks you chose to take against medical advice, which by the way is not based on one retrospective trial from years ago, but cumulative ongoing trails, resulted in harm to the baby or you, the doctor would still have to take full responsibility for that if they chose to continue caring for you. The nurse that was 'fidgeting' was doing all she could to not miss a critical deterioration in the baby's or your condition. Hospitals are not a place to relax. They are a high risk, high pressure environment for doctors as well, but medical intervention has reduced maternal and baby mortality rates to such an extent that people may have forgotten what a risky undertaking it is. I really hope you carefully research whether to vaccinate your child, as that sole intervention has saved millions of children who would have died of 'natural' infections. Wishing you and your lovely family the very best and I am so happy for you all.
Pain-free birth is possible...and I honestly don't know why it happened to me. First birth (daughter Jessica) was 40 years ago :) My labor lasted 6 hours and the nurse was rather angry at me because I didn't know when I was having a contraction. Second birth (daughter Angela) was 37 years ago. I didn't know I was in active labor and went in to the doctor's office for my weekly visit. She told me to go to the hospital...and I had Angie 2 hours later. Many people think I just don't remember the pain...but that's silly. Back in 1976 and 1979, they did not offer pain relief like an epidural. Natural was in! I feel blessed...but really, a healthy baby and mom is ALL that matters!! Enjoy every second with your little one!

I haven't finished the video yet, so I can only comment on this part. Doctors have liability insurance because not everyone is as understanding and forgiving as Mimi and Alex. Their liability insurance is what restricted this physician from covering you after 42 weeks. It's not her choice to say no past that day. You would have put her entire career on the line had she agreed to keep you under her care. If something had gone wrong, even if you hadn't sued her, your insurance could have based on complications with Mimi after the birth so they don't have to pay. Insurance companies find the best place to get money and go for it. It's not the physicians fault, and I'm disappointed you weren't more understanding of the two way street that is healthcare. As clinicians, they must watch out for their patients and also themselves, they are humans too and you should understand where she was coming from (even if she didn't present her case well).
I vote that people can go over 42 weeks, if they agree to never hold the clincians, hospital or anyone else liable for their decision. And sign a contract never to sue.
