  • In this video we’ll cover both how and why you might want to use a monopod when shooting video. We’ll go through the important features that make a video monopod unique and then cover a variety of shots that can be accomplished using a video monopod.
    The Manfrotto BHDV-1 isn’t available for sale anymore, but I would recommend looking at the:

    hey man, really great video!!
    Just a quick question: do you think I will be able to make simple pan with a fluid mounted on a monopod? I mean.. the one you can make easily with a tripod+fluid head.
    Do you think that the 3 little feet at the bottom can guarantee enough stabilisation?

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Hi Francesco, thanks for watching. Yes, you can do a pan while stepping on the spreader (3 feet). Unlike a tripod where the panning is initiated from the head itself, the panning with the monopod will be initiated from the fluid drag system above the spreader. If you look at the reveal shots, one of them is a pan.
      It will never as smooth as a tripod, but it's definitely usable; I do it all the time.

    • @sgnoogle
      @sgnoogle 7 лет назад

      Thank yiu very much for you answer!
      Of course I saw the example in your video, I was just curious if you are able to "block" the drag sistem, and let the fluid head rotate :)

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад +3

      Ah. No, definitely not, the head on the monopod only tilts.
      I see where you were going there, if there was a way to lock the drag system in place and then have the head pan that could work. However, the way it works now I think is more stable because the entire monopod is easier to shift this way. Great question!

    I use a light tripod. Tuck the legs together it converts to a workable monopod. On a tight space it can still act as a tripod with the legs not so far apart (my tripod has variable opening angle). Cannot replace the smoothness of tripod tilt and pan, nor the ability to securely leave the camera shooting from a particular spot, things i always do.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  6 лет назад

      100% agree with everything you said. I look at them as different tools. If I have a choice and weight/size do not matter, I will always pick a tripod because I have much better (therefore bigger and heavier) fluid heads and like you said, the smoothness can't be compared.
      What kind of stuff do you shoot?

    • @MrKockabilly
      @MrKockabilly 6 лет назад

      Mostly short documentaries. I just realized that during shoots, I spend most of my time not actually shooting but doing something else (casual directing, preparing stuff, talking with people, analyzing situations, handling my other gears) and a camera-monopod would be like a baby that you could not just lay down to free up your hands. A tripod would be much more convenient for me (there will always be a floor, even uneven ground, to leave it securely around), just dont use a massive tripod though, rather use the slimmer one. Yeah bigger fluid head made the motion smoother but it also the fact that the tripod (even the slimmer and lighter ones) could stand much more stable than a thicker monopod, thus less shakes.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  6 лет назад

      Yes, naturally. The stability of having 3 legs is a given. There are times where I want a little camera movement to give an "almost" hand-held look but without that much shake. As you mentioned, it can still be achieved with the legs brought in.

    • @MrKockabilly
      @MrKockabilly 6 лет назад

    on the follow shot clip film at 30fps and put it on a 24fps (NTSC) or 25fps (PAL) timeline it'll give you roughly 80% speed so slows the bumps out but you wont notice it's slowed down the movement will just look more languid.

    • @TechGearTalk

      Thanks Mark! That is a really good tip. Also, if you can shoot at a higher rate (60 or 120, you'll be able to do this to a higher degree).

      Absolutely. This is a tool that most people overlook. You could shoot it at 120 and slow it down too so that it’s smoother.

    should I buy a tripod or monopod?

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Hi Ahad. A lot of it depends on what you're looking to do. Typically, I would recommend that you get a tripod first as it is a staple for pretty much any video. You're going to want to be able to shoot a static shot and also to pan and tilt. The monopod is great if you are on the move.
      But ultimately, I guess I should first ask what do you see yourself shooting video of?

      Tech Gear Talk for a documentary?

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      I would first get a video tripod. A video monopod is a nice-to-have but a video tripod is a must for that.

    cant you do this with a tripod not opened? seems wasteful

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Hi. You can totally do these shots with an unopened tripod. I opt for a monopod for several reasons. It's much lighter: my video tripod fluid heads are large and heavy (which of course I want). So if I'm traveling it's a much better option for me. It has a spreader on the bottom which is critical for me when I tilt. It's more compact. With a tripod you have to either expend all 3 legs or have one leg extended and the other 2 not, either way it's more than I like to mess around with if I can. Now of course, Best case scenario would be to have both options and quickly switch to the one that works best. I'm in NO WAY suggesting a video monopod would ever be able to replace a video tripod. Just saying it's another great tool. Let me know what you think.

      I wouldn’t say it’s better, I would say it’s different. The stabilizer can do thinks the monopod can’t, and vice versa
