  • Last week, I successfully mocked up the Titanic boarding suit jacket. This week, I'm constructing the whole jacket, and moving on to mock up the skirt. But will I finish in time for Costume College?

The way the Boarding Suit is almost an exact copy of an actual magazine outfit from 1912 was Iconic! Deborah Scott did her research!

You know what might be good? If costume designers started recording their processes like you guys. Not only would that stop cosplayers from having to investigate features, it would show people some of the effort that goes into their work. It would hopefully make them, and maybe their suppliers, better known. It would be great to know more about the artisans behind embroidery and other decorative elements.

@@skatfan While I very much appreciate the work that goes into these channels, many of them are done by single people who don't have connections to people who have professional equipment and skills. In their spare time, no less. Considering that one custom piece can go for tens of thousands, and the video documentation could itself be a product of some kind, I would think this would be viable. But that's just my thinking.

@@kobaltkween Arent these designers working for a production company for the shows? It would have to be put into the budget and/or releases given to share the how-tos. Terry who did Outlander did have a Twitter feed where she shared details but as I recall it was not a positive experience with people dissing her work as not historical.

I work for a small company that sometimes makes costume elements for theatre & TV. Designers often outsource to companies like mine for specialty stuff and undergarments. When we have weird custom stuff for theatre, we usually do take a lot of pictures to document construction techniques in case the show changes performers and needs another piece. My boss would definitely consider some of our construction methods “trade secrets” and wouldn’t want that information getting out. I don’t know if that’s normal, but that’s how we work. Designers are often pretty far away from the actual construction process.

I can't tell you how much im enjoying watching the boarding suit come together! All roses costumes in the film are gorgeous but the boarding suit is extra special. You've done a fantastic job so far - I'm looking forward to seeing the skirt and accessories too. Good luck!🤞🍀🤞

Two of my outfits for Costume College are 1912 styles. One of the skirts is turquoise and has navy blue velvet ribbon and navy blue taffeta details. The hat I got on Amazon is basically the same style as yours, lol. I used the turquoise fabric for a band around the crown, ivory satin bias around the brim and a large ivory lace bow (50 year old fabric leftover from my mom's wedding dress) and feathers. We'll have to take 1912 photos together.

For the color on the bow, you can thin fabric paint, usually with water to help it be less stiff. You can also try smoothing the pen ink with a touch of rubbing alcohol.

Everybody’s getting ready to go and then they go and they show you all the videos and all the goodies that they get and all the pretty costumes. I’ve been very distracted this season, but I hope you have a wonderful trip. Your garments this year have been so lovely. You just get better and better all the time.

Thank you. I needed your cheerful and skilled self. Just the medicine for me making a stupid goof. I put a zipper fly in a pair of men's pants using the front section of one side and the leg section of the other. If pressing seams is half of good sewing, seam ripping is at least 25% of the rest for me. BUT your video has reenergized me, and I'm ready for another try. (This time, I put safety pins in the top of the pattern pieces to at least get that straight.) You really are so talented! This suit is perfection. I can't wait to see the finished outfit.
