About the aspect ratio... out of curiosity I tried it myself, as I also have an ultrawide monitor (3440x1440). So I set my display into 1:1 pixel mode, then set the system resolution to 25060x1440, which shrinked the dektop correctly into 16:9 ratio, with vertical bars on sides. Then I launched the game (Last Light Redux), set ingame resolution to 2560x1440, but the game still rendered the whole size of the display, and in a ultrawide ratio, as if I have not changed the resolution at all. So something is defenitely wrong there. Funny thing is some part got deformed, like the loading screen was clearly running in 2560x1440, even tho it was stretched horizonatally, filling the whole screen. But the in-game 3D environment still kept its ultrawide format and aspect ratio, despite settings being 2560x1440. I would expect it to either stretch that resolution on whole screen, or run properly in 16:9 ratio bars on the sides. So it is very weird. The other thing that I realised is, I was not able to Alt+Enter the game, making it run in windowed mode. I pressed the Alt+Enter and nothing happened, as if the game does not have a windowed mode at all. This might be an explanation partially, seems like the game is fixed into full screen mode and has issues accepting and properly rendering different aspect ratios, other than native. I tried different games in 16:9 resolution and they had no problems displaying it correctly in the windowed/borderless mode, with black bars on sides. I do not know if this helps you in some ways, but this is what I experieneced. Anyway really loking forward to your Exodus review.
I think Metro Last Light was my favorite of the franchise. I was pretty satisfied with the good ending. I know it's not a "bad" game. But I don't care for the direction Metro Exodus went in. Felt more like Russian Mad Max than Metro in my opinion. Not every great linear single player focused FPS needs to go open world and add crafting/RPG elements either.
While I get why some people might say that Last Light has some CoD DNA in it, I think this can easily be applied to 2033 as well. I mean, does anyone remember that horrible on rails (literally) turret section ? It's one of the few negative aspects of 2033, just like how the boss fights are for Last Light. And we all know that the reason for these sections even being a thing in both games is because they were released at a time where CoD was at the peak of its popularity, and every FPS was trying to be to be exactly like it. But it the end, despite these shortcomings, neither of these games are like CoD and the series didn't go full Michael Bay with Last Light as some of it's detractors think.
Yup. 2033 definitely has similarly scripted moments. There's the aforementioned on rails turret section. There's the scripted chase in Armory. There's the hand car section. Last Light just had a couple more. Honestly, the CoD detractors are odd, because, Metro, even original 2033, has a similar gameplay formula. You're generally following some NPC, who tells you what to do. There's little outside of the main way forward. Every now and then, there's a scripted, on rails, set piece. Parts of the story are told through loading screens between missions, complete with narration. The big differences are that, sometimes, Metro kinda lets you loose, to tackle an area as you wish, generally the stealth sections, there's more scavenging and equipment management, and there are hub areas where you can get immersed in the metro.
I always saw Metro 2033 as a STALKER CoD game and Last Light as a HL2 STALKER game.. 2033 is way more linear and has more action "cool" cinematics than LL.. I mean, I don't believe that Last Light has more action than 2033 has, it's just way better and more easy when it comes to gunplay and stealth.. in 2033 the AI is basically cheating so in gun fights you are especially on higher difficulties dead in mere seconds where in LL the Ranger Hadcore mod isn't as punishing as was the highest difficulty in 2033.. the AI is more balanced which in turn made it, well, dumber in the stealth sections but I still always play Metro games stealthily so I didn't that much a problem with it
Having only played the redux versions it certainly felt to me that LL was intended to be played in spartan mode as a more action packed experience, spartan mode in 2033 made artyom op while survivor mode in LL made the game very hard in specific parts, which to me signifies it wasn't as well optimized for this game. Still, I'm kind of a masochist and love metro's brand of survival action, so I only recommend survivor mode, both games offer more focused experiences with that setting imo, with the action setpieces serving as welcome breaks as long as you don't waste all your resources on them.
Anytime I watch a review of this game i plan for a replay. I remember pre-ordering the first game and having my little mind blown. Been a fan since day one and love how this game has aged.
"No matter what I do I can't seem to get anything but the bad ending" Proceeds to show 30 minutes of stealth gameplay throwing knives at absolutely everyone. Love you mate 😂
From memory, Dmitry Glukhovsky was actually involved in writing the story of Metro: Last Light, which he then expanded on in Metro 2035, the third book in the series. He broke away from the game franchise after that and was involved with Metro: Exodus.
Yea, I remember the first area after getting rescued by Pavel, the map was massive and overwhelming but after getting my bearing, it was really fun to stealthily take down every enemy as well as take out the light sources. I've played all Metro games back from the original version up to the latest and have loved every moment of the games, replaying them as well.
The writer of the books is also a writer for all three games, there's a reason the story fits together. Also Artyom opening the metro to the dark ones happens in the original 2033 book, and while not mentioned in the first game, it was very much part of the story before last light.
I remember this series vividly. I just went with my mom to the casino to play the slots. I won big, she did not, so I gave her half my winnings and saved a little but I asked her on our way back home to go to gamestop. I remember this game coming our and thought I'd pick it up, not knowing a darn thing about it. Best purchase I ever made for a game I was clueless about!
Okay, Raycevick AND Avalanche have Metro bids drop within HOURS of each other? Some Scooby-Doo fuckery is afoot. Edit: on the subject of the Redemption ending, Metro Last Light really makes you EARN Artyom’s Redemption ending, which goes beyond doing the obvious “good” morale choices-you, as Artyom, are much more experienced to the social complexities in the Metro, but he has a very group-over-individual mindset, so moral points are earned based on whether or not he does the right thing and grows his understanding of people’s nature. So listening to certain dialogue, playing instruments, performing kind or merciful acts, finding certain hidden areas, etc., and also by not being violently belligerent in action in relation to the ghostly, unidentifiable attackers. You cannot kill every human in the game and still get the good ending. The Metro wiki has a semi-comprehensive list in the Moral Points page, but it is not the sum total.
Yeah I seem to remember needing to have barely any kills to achieve the good ending. With the newer stealth system you can either silently kill or silently neutralize (brass knuckles to the face). Definitely more of a challenge than it was in 2033.
@@rienstien1 There’s a lot of behavioral moral checks you make during the game-especially when you go through the zone with the Baby Dark One. I distinctly remember getting by accident, my controller died during the safety check during the red line escape, sitting through the whole check nets you a big moral bonus.
Actually in both 2033 and last light I always kill (kill, not knock out) all enemies and always get the good endings, even after leaving all bandit, nazi and red outposts without a single living person, except for those soldiers who surrender which you should just knock out. I even sometimes deliberately earn one or two bad points (you can even watch the Venice thing) and still get the good endings. Killing isn't a major factor for the positive moral points. What's more important is helping other people/beggars, exploring ALL hidden locations/stashes and listening to ALL conversations (including enemies, before killing them). So stealth is really the way to go, because you won't be able to listen to enemy conversations if you go in guns blazing).
Theres that train section with the nightgoggles you have to completely ghost to even get moral points. No being spotted, no hurting anyone. The system is rough. Redux even made it easier.
You lose moral points for killing LITERAL NAZIS so no Metro Last Light's karma system is bullsh*t. At least in the first game it was more complex and nuanced
if you want advice on how to get the true endings in Metro it basically boils down to: - refraining from killing unless it is necessary. killing before the enemy is engaged in combat with you reduces moral points. also you can: - not getting spotted in a section gains you a moral point - Doing good deeds like giving to the poor or helping people gains a moral point - playing musical instruments gains moral points (for some reason) - finding hidden stuff like stashes and notes gains moral points - listening to people's coversations gains moral points - there are other moral points which can be gained through more arbitrary and nonsensical means, for those you should consult the wiki. also sometimes enemies will surrender when you've killed enough of their buddies. watch that you don't kill surrendering enemies as you can lose MPs for it
Don't know if this applies to the originals, but I just recently replayed the first 2 games' Redux version while killing pretty much every enemy and a lot of them from stealth, BUT, doing almost all the good deeds and good the good endings in both games. So you can kill even unaware enemies and get the good ends.
Forgot to add that you have to spare people that are giving up, thou this isn't like exodus where any enemy can give up, pretty sure only specific enemies give at specific points.
He probably got a lap dance at the strip club on the venice level, iirc doing that makes it so you literally cannot get the good ending, no matter how many moral points you have.
If I'm not mistaken, you must avoid killing random enemies as most as you can to get the good ending. There are several sections that you can sneak past and leave everyone alive, so this may be the reason you only get the bad ending.
There are all manner of random little things that give you karma points, things that have seemingly no connection to morality, like exploring little nooks in the levels.
Yeah, like usual, he couldn't be bothered to put effort into the stuff. Bitching later is easier, just like in "Stalker:Anomaly"video: "-mutants too hard, so switched them off completely, hurrr"
The great thing about Metro Last light is that it is actually canon. Miller and Artyom mentioned the battle of D-6 in the book Metro 2035 which was (spoiler) at the end of Metro Last light.
The watch appearance is based on the game style you select when starting a new game in redux. Survival or Spartan (as far as I remember) - mirroring the vibes of 2033 and last light respectively, thus why you get the specific stylised watch from each.
This game had heavy Half Life 2 vibes. The pacing, the world building, the acting. It all felt like an epic linear immersive adventure with tons of variety at every turn.
Ya know, i never really thought about that, but it really does. The way nearly all of the cutscenes are in engine and allow you to move around feely during them, is another similarity.
@@JohnDiabol Yes, but Ranger Hardcore isn't anywhere near impossible once you know what you're doing. Though I have to stop myself from recommending new players jump straight to it as I've been playing these games repeatedly for six or seven years and Ranger Hardcore is so old-hat to me that I long forgot the learning curve.
If I'm not mistaken Dmitry Glukhovsky has at the very least had a hand in the writing process of every Metro game including the one that 4A are working now.
I'm part Russian but it takes quite a bit of computing to catch everything, I play with English subs but Russian dub because they've done a spot on job - it helps with immersion, its set there after all, and yknow how many games do you really get the chance to be in another country where everyone only speaks in that language? It got me thinking though, switching to English dubs doesn't make sense because rather than it being a dub so you can understand it, it feels like it's more a dub because all the characters decided that even though they're Russian and in Russia, they'll all speak grammatically perfect English but with Russian accents to remind you they are in fact Russian not English? If you don't think about it, it doesn't really break immersion, makes me feel a bit crazy to think about it
Metro series is a slavic, entry-level triple A project. You see a good game but feel the struggle devs faced doing it. It's hard to explain. It's like buying an iPhone from a flee market. Yes it works but you constantly in fear of cops showing up to bust you for a stolen phone. Metro works but you constantly see shortcuts devs took. Great video, dude! Much appreciate!
Can't wait to hear your take on Exodus. I didn't get it due to Epic Exclusivity until recently but man, what a ride. I built a new machine and it was one of the first games I played on it, has some pretty spiffy Corsair iCUE interaction too.
So this is funny, I've always thought you and Raycevick had really similar voices, and he put out a Metro Exodus review the same day as this, so I thought "Wow, Avalanche put up two Metro vids at once?! That's nuts!"
Artyom’s watch is tied to wether or not you’re playing Survival or Spartan on Redux (Xbox One at least). The analog is for Survival and digital is Spartan :)
I was really skeptical about playing the metro games as I get super motion sick from fps games. Man am I glad I decided to stick it out! The story is fascinating, gameplay is epic, and it legitimately didn't cause me too many issues. Getting jumpscared constantly helps 🤣
i'd argue that's more of a problem with the really vague 'morality' system that basically doesn't explain how it works and a lot of the positive karma points are gained from really arbitrary sources, like exploring a secret area or listening to a random conversation that isn't important. not to mention, doing a perfect pacifist run on all of the levels is not only much more difficult, but on some levels it's practically impossible to not kill anyone.
@@jonathanoriley8260 dude, i also did a pacifist run on ranger hardcore and i STILL thought the morality system was badly implemented. regardless of the difficulty, i still think it's really vague and makes me realise a lot of morality systems in video games are very binary and usually don't make sense. so killing a man who was attacking me who, more than likely, would've continued to horribly torture other people if left alive isn't a 'good choice', but watching a theatre show is 'morally good'? don't get me wrong, i actually quite liked the bolshoi theatre show and how immersive it is, but how does watching it make me more morally good?
Playing through the series for the first time and I’m on last light right now. When escaping from the communist camp I was very frustrated with the lack of creativity in the stealth and how they clearly had 1 solution for most stealth sections. Right as I was getting burnt out, the next chapter was where you drive the well lit car in the tunnels and that has to be my favorite part of the series so far!
I had to laugh at 53:00, "all of this dumb knowledge is now in your head too." Pretty much sums it up, but I love it nonetheless. Keep up the great work!
I actually am deciding to play the Xbox 360 versions because of this. I love seeing games push the limits of older hardware, especially ones I didn't get to try back in the day. I've played the Redux versions, but never the original renditions. It's going to be awesome seeing where they came from and how they differ from Redux.
I don't know if anyone has brought this up yet, but the console ports on Redux use the alternative watch, rather than the original Last Light watch. The reason you saw the original nixie tube Last Light watch, is because you were playing on the Spartan mode for the console playthroughs. The original 2033 style analog watch, is used when playing in Survival. It's just a neat addition that they added, for the different modes. Spartan, being more like the original release of Last Light, uses the original LL watch, which displays, down to the second, how much air you have in a filter. Survival, being more like the original 2033, has a watch that, while easier to read, only gives you a quick approximation of how much air is left.
I remember playing this back in the day when I got it as a free PS+ game. I had no knowledge of either the books or the previous game, but I decided to give it a try. I had mixed results. I greatly enjoyed the premise and atmosphere, but I quickly found some catastrophic issues with the gameplay. Given that the game featured stealth gameplay with non-lethal takedowns, I immediately began working towards a no-kill run, only to find that the stealth was BROKE AS F. I swear, it felt completely random at times whether enemies would detect me. Some enemies I could walk about a foot in front of them and get no reaction, while other times I'd be 30 ft. behind an enemy. In complete darkness, and they'd suddenly whip around and start shooting me. And the sweet spot for preforming takedowns was so specific. I actually had times where I had to back up because I was too close to trigger a takedown, and forget it if you were even a little off-center. Maybe it was an issue with the port, or maybe it was an issue with me, but this game has been cemented in my mind as having the worst stealth mechanics of any game I've ever played. About halfway through I got so frustrated that I said screw it and started sniping enemies with my air rifle, and suddenly the game started to feel fun. I made it through the rest of the game killing everyone and everything that got in my way, and although I disliked seeing Artyom die in the end, he went out like such a badass I couldn't really complain. I never even knew there was another ending until I heard the announcement for Exodus and was like "But how, he's dead!" I've always meant to go back and give the game another try to see if the stealth was really as bad as I remember, but never gotten around to it, so if anyone else had these problems, please let me know that I'm not imagining this! Great review as always!
don’t think I’ve played a single game I’ve watched you review yet but FUCK your flow of info and smooth ass voice make these hour long videos addicting
So at the end you mentioned the watches, and it should probably be noted that there is a reason they are different, and this even ties into 2033 redux. The easiest way to say it is survival mode is 2033 while Spartan mode is last light. With the original last light game you could take a few more bullets, the enemies could take a few more bullets, there was more ammo in the world, stealth was less of a mechanical focus (and I honestly believe more difficult but not in a good way because of it), and the watch was different. This is what you get when you choose Spartan mode for the redux games, and if you chose survival you got the 2033 game. Now I’ve only played the PS4 redux and the PC redux, but if you were playing on Spartan mode in either last light or 2033 your watch actually changed to the digital cathode ray tube watch instead of the analog one. Also some extra fun facts about these games (or at least last light and the redux versions). If you pull out your lighter the flame and smoke trial shows you where you need to go. You can see Pavel use this when you’re in the tunnels with him early on in the game. It should be noted you already have a compass that does this, but I find the lighter more useful and enjoyable to look at. At least in the redux version during the entrance to D6 mission where you get the flamethrower if the anomaly gets to your car it crashes the game. Now this could just be on my end, but I’ve had it happen 2 times on PC and once on PS4 so I’m going to say it’s intentional, or at least a consistent bug. Finally to get the good ending in 2033 it’s far more about being observant than it is being good. Since the change in the ending is far more about Artyom realizing the world that makes sense. Now with last light it’s far more about actually being good than being observant. This makes sense since the ending is generally based off of how the dark ones see you rather than anything Artyom sees in himself. So to get the good ending in last light you almost have to play as a pacifist for most of the game while also listening in onto every conversation. If you want some extra goodies helping the mama bear at the end, getting the boy his teddy, saving the screaming woman from bandits, save the woman and child from bandits, tipping the bartender in Venice after you trash the place, and not killing anyone can help you. It should be noted that killing nazis, and bandits don’t normally count toward good or bad karma, and any fight where it’s impossible to continue without killing someone won’t hurt you either, but pretty much every other time it will.
Having just beat all 3 Metro games in order over the last 2 1/2 weeks (cuz of your recommendation after putting them off since i bought them all on day 1, 😂) I personally felt like Last Light went overboard on benign “modern” like the other shooters at the time and took away some of the things that made 2033 so special, still love all 3 but LL is one I would replay when it’s time to do another run.
As a fan of the books and games, this entry to me is still my favorite! I feel it has the best balance in gameplay and narrative linearity. Has some powerful moments and additions that improve immersion, and beyond anything else Pavel is just one of the better characters in the series and the setup for the adventure alone is just terrific given the book's eventual course.
@@AvalancheReviews I get that. Pavel's story definitely highlights a really cool dynamic that elevates the game, but maybe that feeling is because the story in the first one subverted expectations for everyone; those who read the book and first time players with the hidden ending. This time around we knew the card was up the sleeve the whole time, not to mention it was so easy to grab that I had to tip the magician $5 in hopes he could buy new tricks. PS --> Love the videos. Have a great week champ!
Hey Avalanche, love that you uphold yourself to such a high level of quality, I never noticed an issue, and well and truly I come for the insight, commentary, reviews, and information, which is always above and beyond. Your channel is top notch. Hope if anyone mentioned anything it was done respectfully and because they want you to grow and keep improving your channel, hope you don't let the bullshit get you down. Lots of places for similar content but no one doing it like you, and it is your quality of commentary that makes the difference, not just the quality of video.
Oh come on! I just watched your entire STALKER retrospective today as well as the Metro 2033 video. I am literally downloading STALKER SOC right now (I bought it back in 2007 or 8 but never played it longer than 20 mins), and thought "phew at least I have a break before his last light video 😂😂😂". Time to watch this while STALKER downloads, I guess!
Last Light was written by the author of the 2033 novel, Dmitry Glukhovsky. That's why it has such a coherent plot and is similar to 2033 game despite not being based on a book.
Nope. Last Light was an original script by the devs. The writer liked it so much it adapted it to the 2035 book. Exodus is a sequel to both Last Light game and the 2035 book.
I really liked the bullet/currency system. Thought it was cool to have to decide between spending money on gear or using better bullets for higher damage
Excellent video! I would like to point out than Glukhovsky was heavily involved in the writing of Last Light. He even gave a lot of interviews about how it was to write a screenplay for a video game compared to writing a novel. So the story is basically a Gluckovsky creation
Last light Redux is honestly very well optimized. I’m running a GTX 970 which is a tad bit outdated as you could imagine, and running a nice 32gb of ram. I can easily run this game at max settings without frame rate issues. I hover around 60 FPS and maybe 50 FPS in some larger more intense areas
And Raycevik just uploaded a retrospective on Exodus, which I'll watch right after this one. The content gods have been generous today! Also, don't sweat the resolution, its perfectly watchable.
41:42 one minor thing is that watch actually changes based on if you are playing survival or spartan mode in redux at least, Im unsure about the original but I in redux survival offers the analog watch face, and spartan mode offers the digital one, I assume because it may be easier to know exactly the amount of seconds left at a quick glance on the digital one. the same thing happens in 2033 if I remember right. because I was confused when I did a spartan playthrough to get achievements as to why the watch looked different.
I remember just before Exodus came out on Steam, I played through both 2033 and Last Light and after learning of the morality system after beating 2033 and getting the default ending, I decided that when I was going to start Last Light that I would try to get as much morality points as possible and see if I could get the good ending. I remember that I was as pacifist as possible and tried to go through every scenario without killing anyone and just snuck my way through everything, there are some parts where this is impossible, but I don't think the game faults you in these scenarios so it's fine. I also saved everyone when given the option and listened to nearly every conversation to its completion and that's how I got the good ending.
One other thing I noticed wrt the moral choices, in the scene with Anna at the end of the Oktyabrskaya level, you've still got the mask on, albeit cracked, which means you tried plugging Lesnitsky and doing that classic routine to get him off of Anna. The game counts this as one of the biggest moral choices it has, if you want to get the good ending you pretty much cannot make the wrong choice here, you've gotta take him at his word and take the mask off in order to get the moral point.
Dunno if many people read the books. 2034 mostly follows Hunter, as it turns out he survived his expedition into the Dark ones territory but was traumatized. Don't want to go any further to avoid spoilers since what I said so far is just the beginning of the book. But I can see why they didn't want to necessarily stop Artyom story. If they wanted to continue with the "voiceless" protagonist, Hunter wouldn't be a good option, and giving up on most of the character connections we had build from the 2033 (Ulman, Han, Miller) was probably also not as appealing, not to mention in 2034 a big part of the story is how Hunter is not "in control" of himself 100% of the time, which would go against the game wanting the player to decide how to play (kill/no kill). Edit: Follow instead of Fallow.
I think the speed of the romance plot actually fits very well the Metro world and making it more "believable" (by modern humans standards) would actually subtract from it. Life in the metro is harsh, potentially short, specially for a Ranger. She firsts meets Artyom, he is technically just another guy she met. She puts up a strong persona, very guarded, don't want anyone getting stupid ideas around her ass, even more so when they're alone topside with no one else. Also, she might have to shoot him when they first meet, so she is keeping herself sane. Specially because she already heard of him, and his exploits with her father, so she probably already has some interest in the legend himself. Her initial dialogue is less "I hate you" and more "I am testing to see if you buckle or if you're half as much as the story say you are". But at the same time, she sees you fight, she then sees you survive hell, and she is attracted to that sorta thing. It does help Artyom didn't do anything weird around her and didn't seem intimidated by her, big bonuses. Plus, he rescues her later, and even put himself in danger by taking of his mask rather than taking a safe and otherwise easy shot at whatishisname who she thought was gonna slit her throat anyway. Again, this life is harsh and often short. And when she finds herself feeling extra lonely, hopeless on her long term survival, and alone with a guy who has attractive attributes about himself, who has save her dad and her life, and hasn't been an ass to her, man, of course she is gonna jump on that. Like, 99.999% of people in a similar situation would.
53:18 I’ll say that the best console port is actually the Xbox S/X versions, as it add auto HDR, making the lighting better, and the FPS boost makes the game run at a capped 120 fps. This also isn’t apart of any console war bs also. Just as the Xbox Series S is probably the most widely available new console on the market and most available for that experience at a low price compared to PC.
I purposefully waited for your reviews for the spoilers. You make the stories easily understood. I also don't care much for graphics but I still enjoy your port analysis.
In order to get the good ending, you can't kill any of the animals on the bridge with the baby dark one. That and you cant kill the enemies in the complex you sneak through afterwards. The bridge was a bigger pain in the ass imo but i got the good ending after doing both of those things
I played through all three of the metro games about a year ago but I had a one week break in between games to try and prevent burn out and I really enjoyed them alot, I think the setting is great and I would get sucked into that world for hours at a time. Looking forward to your exodus video 👍
Metro 2033 was still a big change from the book. A lot of it was about the supernatural of the tunnels and philosophy. 140 pages in an only a few shots fires and no mutants killed.
What made Last Light slightly disappointing for me was the fact that you're almost never alone and there's always someone holding your hand. I also hate the artificial difficulty and annoying boss fights, where you had to exploit a certain weakness, which usually involves you running around the area like a headless chicken dropping mines. At least the turret sections in the game now let you use your own guns. That Metro 2033 turret section, urgh...
I remember my friend bought this back in the day (he never played the first one) and told me he’d let me borrow it after he finished it because it was good. I bought 2033 and we traded off after we beat them
Man I love these first two games so fucking much. It’s the entire reason I own Combloc rifles actually. My SKS is actually mocked up in a camo similar to the 2033 AK-74MN, and I’m working on getting a “cheese grater” heat shield for it from the Last Light AK-74MN. And my next rifle goal is a AKMS. I digress, these games were a pillar of my childhood and stuck with me into my adult life. I was genuinely sad to leave the metro in Exodus. I hope we can return to the metro one day.
@Avalanche Reviews I have had similar weird problems with stretched Images, especially with older games, I could not figure it out. Then I finally read a comment that told me it was because I had "Text Size" set to above 100. ( Right Click Destop / Display Settings / Text Size ) It fixed it for me. Hope This Helps. Good Luck, Nice Videos.
Anyone AND I MEAN ANYONE comparing this masterpiece to COD needs mental help. This is, along with 2033, one of the best fps experiences I have had since HL2 back in 2004. The level of detail, polish, atmosphere, story, and amazing gameplay is second to none. Saying this game is the RE3 of the series is also so stupid, Last Light is frankly the best game in the Metro series whilst RE3 is nothing more than an RE2 expansion and don't get me started on the shambles that is RE3 remake. Also saying that 4A at the time of Last Lights development were comparable in size to that of Activision, EA, or Ubisoft is downright insane.
It definately has this half-life vibe, succesfully mixing up different gameplay elements: shooting, sneaking, exploration, exposition and storytelling. As for CoD - guys from Activision should fckn learn from 4A!
He was not comparing it to COD... just saying that the game got more an an explosive set piece action spectacle element to it and it obviously does. He is completely right that every FPS at that time was trying to be like COD in that way. Just like him though, I don't mind those elements when they are done well. With the RE analogy, I think he was just going for the fact that RE3 was the last true "tank control"/fixed came angles game in the mainline series, before the radical evolution with RE4. As far as the last statement, I agree with you that he was definitely wrong there. While their team was expanded by quite a bit, 4A was famously making this game in some nasty conditions and facing obstacles that would make any AAA dev house's employee quit in a second.
Easiest way to do it is try and do a pacifist run as much as you can, knock people out in stealth sections, leave beasts alone outside if you can, listen to NPC's stories, give bullets to the beggers, get drunk ruin a bar then pay for it to get fixed, save Pavel, take your mask off when you confront Lesnistzky. The good ending isn't that hard to get you just can't go around shooting everyone.
@@deadwinterknight1981 You can absolutely murder everything that is hostile towards you. What you need is exploration, patience and understanding. Metro "moral" system is not based on "murder bad, pacifism good" but how much you are willing to listen, explore and understand the world. Of course if the game explicitly offers you the opportunity to kill or spare, you better off sparing. (Aside from L, he better off dead lmao)
I just love how you can just knock everyone out, like why is artyom like the Russian Conner kenway, Batman literally just one punching everyone he sees like it’s nothing I literally kept thinking I was on easy mode then seeing i was on normal mode like what is this guys work out routine like where he can just one shot an entire team of fully armored heavily armed soldiers.
To get the good ending, you also can't kill anyone. Sneak knock out as many people as possible, preferable all of them. There are also a few people you have to save before they die like a women who's being attacked on a train.
About the watch comparison. iirc both watches are in the game for Redux. The new one is if you play on the 2033 mode, while the original is still in the more action paced Last Light mode.

Love the the metro games and love the books own all of the games and books.
At least 2033 works properly lol...
I think the bear fight in Last Light, is very metro.
It fits the franchise, has an emotional undertone and bonds you to the dark one.
This Metro Retro got me replaying through Metro, just hit Exodus and man, I love these games
I bought all of the games on discount immediately after I finished watching his Metro 2033 retro. Loving the series!
Seriously!!! They are legendary.
fr! I'm replaying metro 2033
Anytime I watch a review of this game i plan for a replay. I remember pre-ordering the first game and having my little mind blown. Been a fan since day one and love how this game has aged.
lol metro retro
"No matter what I do I can't seem to get anything but the bad ending"
Proceeds to show 30 minutes of stealth gameplay throwing knives at absolutely everyone.
What a wholesome story
At least in the first game it was more complex and nuanced
if you want advice on how to get the true endings in Metro it basically boils down to:
- refraining from killing unless it is necessary. killing before the enemy is engaged in combat with you reduces moral points.
also you can:
- not getting spotted in a section gains you a moral point
- Doing good deeds like giving to the poor or helping people gains a moral point
- playing musical instruments gains moral points (for some reason)
- finding hidden stuff like stashes and notes gains moral points
- listening to people's coversations gains moral points
- there are other moral points which can be gained through more arbitrary and nonsensical means, for those you should consult the wiki.
also sometimes enemies will surrender when you've killed enough of their buddies. watch that you don't kill surrendering enemies as you can lose MPs for it
Don't know if this applies to the originals, but I just recently replayed the first 2 games' Redux version while killing pretty much every enemy and a lot of them from stealth, BUT, doing almost all the good deeds and good the good endings in both games.
@@laguna_tuna1579 No, it only deducts a point.
Bitching later is easier, just like in "Stalker:Anomaly"video:
"-mutants too hard, so switched them off completely, hurrr"
@@Andriej69 what the fuck?
@@rovat6285 Can't read?
I beat the game once having not killed a single person and never got a single bad karma point and still got the bad ending.
“Find myself wishing I could have had a significantly larger package”, me too man, me too.
This game had heavy Half Life 2 vibes. The pacing, the world building, the acting. It all felt like an epic linear immersive adventure with tons of variety at every turn.
Ya know, i never really thought about that, but it really does. The way nearly all of the cutscenes are in engine and allow you to move around feely during them, is another similarity.
except this is actually good

Honestly, after spending a crap load of time on all three Metro games, I think that Last Light is probably still my favorite of the bunch.
It's really really good, no question about it. Also unforgivingly difficult on the hardest difficulties!
I agree. Last Light is the best one

If I'm not mistaken Dmitry Glukhovsky has at the very least had a hand in the writing process of every Metro game including the one that 4A are working now.
EXODUS is the "shit" to play. Amazing METRO Game. Metro is one of the best series with new great visual technical solutions each game for its time.
If you don't think about it, it doesn't really break immersion, makes me feel a bit crazy to think about it
That is a valid point for every media that does the accented english
Metro series is a slavic, entry-level triple A project. You see a good game but feel the struggle devs faced doing it. It's hard to explain. It's like buying an iPhone from a flee market. Yes it works but you constantly in fear of cops showing up to bust you for a stolen phone. Metro works but you constantly see shortcuts devs took. Great video, dude! Much appreciate!
56:46 the Nixie watch still is in the PC Redux version of the game but only appears in Spartan mode.
You can’t get the good ending unless you ALSO spare the Nosalis mother bear thing. It’s a major good karma deed like when you spared Pavel.
The crazy thing is, I'm still working on my Exodus video. That butthole beat me to it!!! HA!!
Artyom’s watch is tied to wether or not you’re playing Survival or Spartan on Redux (Xbox One at least). The analog is for Survival and digital is Spartan :)
The watch varies on Spartan/Survival on all platforms for Redux games.
I don't think the weapons that killed the Dark Ones were atomic. I think they were conventional warheads.
I was really skeptical about playing the metro games as I get super motion sick from fps games. Man am I glad I decided to stick it out! The story is fascinating, gameplay is epic, and it legitimately didn't cause me too many issues. Getting jumpscared constantly helps 🤣
- Always kills everything in sight with no hesitation
- Wonders why he gets the Bad Ending every time
*_SMOOTH BRAIN MOMENT_*
Very smooth brain.
i'd argue that's more of a problem with the really vague 'morality' system that basically doesn't explain how it works and a lot of the positive karma points are gained from really arbitrary sources, like exploring a secret area or listening to a random conversation that isn't important. not to mention, doing a perfect pacifist run on all of the levels is not only much more difficult, but on some levels it's practically impossible to not kill anyone.
@@manboy4720 "practically impossible to not kill anyone"
Me: "haha 2 pacifist ranger hardcore playthroughs go brrr"
@@manboy4720 _Cope_
Playing through the series for the first time and I’m on last light right now. When escaping from the communist camp I was very frustrated with the lack of creativity in the stealth and how they clearly had 1 solution for most stealth sections. Right as I was getting burnt out, the next chapter was where you drive the well lit car in the tunnels and that has to be my favorite part of the series so far!
Metro Exodus was awesome, the whole franchise so far is one of my favs lol, both games and books :D hope the movie turns out good
Same opinion here lol
Such a great franchise
Wait, there's gonna be a movie adaptation of Metro?🤯
I had to laugh at 53:00, "all of this dumb knowledge is now in your head too." Pretty much sums it up, but I love it nonetheless. Keep up the great work!
That's the goal here. To spread some of this dumb shit around.
Getting the good ending is really hard but worth it.
Funny how this video on Last Light and Raycevick's video on Exodus came out almost back to back.
I loved all the focus on the paranormal. Something I miss in Exodus.
Bro out here throwing knifes and killing every enemy and wonders why he didn't got the good ending lol
If you find yourself down with nuclear disasters and eastern Europe...Up's, that sounds hard today.
For some reason I'm waiting for your Stalker2 review more than I'm waiting for the actual game 🤣🤣
I can agree with that. I love 2034's story, but Last Light feels so much more impactful.
@@AvalancheReviews I get that. Pavel's story definitely highlights a really cool dynamic that elevates the game, but maybe that feeling is because the story in the first one subverted expectations for everyone; those who read the book and first time players with the hidden ending. I just started watching the stalker vids you did and finished 2033 this morning glad this was perfect timing
Its amazing how good these games look and run all of em at 1440p maxed out, even exodus I get all that rt goodness. This quality is rare !!
Can't believe how quickly you crank out these videos. Thanks for your work man
And Raycevik just uploaded a retrospective on Exodus, which I'll watch right after this one. The content gods have been generous today! Also, don't sweat the resolution, its perfectly watchable.
I like Last Light a lot. Same for all the Metro games.
And stalker.
I am just discovering your channel now. 6 hours on Silent Hill review ??!! You are truly inspired. Thank you and great job !
One other thing I noticed wrt the moral choices, in the scene with Anna at the end of the Oktyabrskaya level, you've still got the mask on, albeit cracked, which means you tried plugging Lesnitsky and doing that classic routine to get him off of Anna. The game counts this as one of the biggest moral choices it has, if you want to get the good ending you pretty much cannot make the wrong choice here, you've gotta take him at his word and take the mask off in order to get the moral point.
you could've made the entire video in 21:9, looks really great on phones as most phones nowadays are longer than 16:9
I offset the drop in stealth difficulty by lowering gamma.. it makes a difference to gameplay when your vision is as limited as your enemies'
Anna certainly gets redone in Exodus lol
Finally part 2 glad my subscription wasn’t wasted
53:18 I’ll say that the best console port is actually the Xbox S/X versions, as it add auto HDR, making the lighting better, and the FPS boost makes the game run at a capped 120 fps. This also isn’t apart of any console war bs also. Just as the Xbox Series S is probably the most widely available new console on the market and most available for that experience at a low price compared to PC.
I purposefully waited for your reviews for the spoilers. You make the stories easily understood. I also don't care much for graphics but I still enjoy your port analysis.
Metro is my fav series of all time and last light is my fav and that main menu theme is amazing
In order to get the good ending, you can't kill any of the animals on the bridge with the baby dark one. That and you cant kill the enemies in the complex you sneak through afterwards. The bridge was a bigger pain in the ass imo but i got the good ending after doing both of those things
On my setup Last Light Redux still uses the original watch design.
To get the good ending you have to stealth the majority of levels.
Yo, not sure if you saw this - but your video is unlisted unless you go through playlists?
My favorite of the Metro games. Fun, well paced pulp fiction, and continued on from 2033 really well.
I remember my friend bought this back in the day (he never played the first one) and told me he’d let me borrow it after he finished it because it was good. I bought 2033 and we traded off after we beat them
To get the good ending you need to spare both guys and sneak passed everyone human character area you can
Man I love these first two games so fucking much.
I played on ultrawide too and had the same picture stretching issues.
@@pkurylov why would they learn when they only ever need to barely lift a finger and summon million of dollars?
@@mdd4296 So we can enjoy better games??? Not they will ofc, but as i said they should.
LOVE your reviews. I'm always happy to see when you upload a new video. Last light is my favorite metro hands down
47:35 the dude you're chasing is the one who pushed the table, lol
the good ending of last light is so goddamn hard to get, i have finished this game over 4 times already and i just cant get it
Easiest way to do it is try and do a pacifist run as much as you can, knock people out in stealth sections, leave beasts alone outside if you can, listen to NPC's stories, give bullets to the beggers, get drunk ruin a bar then pay for it to get fixed, save Pavel, take your mask off when you confront Lesnistzky.
I literally looked up a guide for it
It was about 1-2 hours long
57:13 Jared stating the real achievements of Switch!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
I just love how you can just knock everyone out, like why is artyom like the Russian Conner kenway, Batman literally just one punching everyone he sees like it’s nothing I literally kept thinking I was on easy mode then seeing i was on normal mode like what is this guys work out routine like where he can just one shot an entire team of fully armored heavily armed soldiers.
To get the good ending, you also can't kill anyone. Sneak knock out as many people as possible, preferable all of them. There are also a few people you have to save before they die like a women who's being attacked on a train.
such a soothing voice, perfect to listen to while i play S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Anomaly
The world of Metro would make a great MMO. Stations as faction hubs, explored and unexplored lines, hostile over world.
Not sure about Exodus, it demystified the whole series by retro-ing the rest of the world back into existence on the second mission.
The fact that in LL you went to the surface less, made it scarier when you had to
He did it again, another certified zone classic
About the watch comparison. iirc both watches are in the game for Redux. The new one is if you play on the 2033 mode, while the original is still in the more action paced Last Light mode.
