“Drivin’ Down to Georgia” came out in 2021, four years after Tom Petty died. He and the Heartbreakers had recorded it for the “Wildflowers” album, but it didn’t make the album. “Wildflowers” was posthumously rereleased as a double album. I still remember the first time I heard this song. I was running errands with my mother. We were listening to Tom Petty Radio on SiriusXM. The host announced he was going to play “Drivin’ Down to Georgia” and he gave listeners information about the song. I knew I was going to love it once I heard the title as I love the state of Georgia. This is now one of my favorite Tom Petty songs. I listen to it all the time.

First time I truly payed attention to Tom Petty's music was in 1989, and was instantly captivated by the sound of The Heartbreakers and his solo work. I learned how famous and important he had been for Rock music in the two decades prior! I was in awe, asking myself where had I been all that time?!
I was at a concert in ~ 1991 the first time I heard this song. Not on any album at that time so I'd never heard it before and I was floored. Now I have it on my 'Driving Tunes' Spotify playlist and remember that concert every time it comes on. Man I miss Tom.

This reminds me of a vid I shot while driving down I-75 South through Kentucky in March 2012...heading down to Florida from Michigan to look for my new home (now Bradenton!). While jamming to "Runnin' Down A Dream" - my absolute theme song for the trip - I filmed the cool topography along side of the interstate...the crazy, multi-colored jagged cutouts through the hills and mountain bases and the spring blooms on the trees and the cars (and moving trucks like I was destined to rent a year later!) I was passing along the way...singing loudly along with Tom (along with the rest of the AMAZING "FULL MOON FEVER"! What a rush it was to blare this song and album over and over again as I ran down my own personal dream...God bless you, Tom!!! I and countless others SO miss you, brother!!!

However, this official version pales in comparison to the outstanding version played by the band on November 4, 1993 at the Stephen C. I wanted to quickly share my story about my deep love for Tom. I was born in 1973. My biological dad left when I was a toddler. I didn't know much about him. Only that he was in a band. I saw a few photos and he looked a lot like Tom. As I grew up I saw Tom on MTV and listened to a ton of his music. I never told anyone but I was convinced in my heart that he was my real dad. It was a sad day when I realized that he certainly was not😅 as an adult I adore him for his music and his life but, little me will always have a place in her heart for her imaginary dad.
I set out on an adventure across the country down to Georgia in 2011. Petty played all the way. This song was definitely one. I had a live version. The studio version wasn't released at that time.
