EAS Scenario | Cyberattack on Electrical Power Grids | Alert World

- Emergency Alert System (EAS) scenario. A Los Angeles-based power grid is attacked by a computer virus spread through a malware program called Pegasus. The power turns on and off in various parts of the urban area. Local authorities warn that it is a cyberattack, and are unsure how long it will take to neutralize the attackers.
Special thanks to Daniel Nieblas, who wrote the amazing script of this scenario. The story was based on his published article: / interview-with-a-cyber...
The first EAS tone was made by myself using a Korg Monotron Duo. To create the second one, I used a sampler to sample real EAS tones and remix them into a new one.

****This EAS is pure fiction just like in a horror movie. Do not follow any advice from the announcement.**** - Кино
What's really scary is that in reality most power grids expand across several states as they're controlled by a single company, so if California went down entirely it would likely take Nevada and New Mexico with it. And given how many critical infrastructure systems are internet-accessible when they really don't need to be for any reason, something like this could happen entirely by accident and not just as a malicious act.
It has happened back in 2012 some dumbass shut off the switch wrong at a major power grid on the west coast and the hole southwest was down for the evening and night
there are only four grids in the conus/Canada. Texas is the only grid not connected.
Peter griffon
All 800+ million people in Europe are all under one power grid. If that power grid fails, 10% of the world population would be without power. Even worse for India, at 18% percent of the world without electricity.
cali already has regular power outages lmao
I was in Texas when the winter storm knocked out power for several days. To say things were chaotic is an understatement. I can't imagine what would happen if power was knocked out globally.
my great grandparents grew up without electricity they seemed fine
@@newbleppmore7855 Everything back then also didn't run off of electricity. Basically every necessity (medical equipment, cooking, food storage, etc) requires it. So it'd be hell.
that happened to me too (i live in Texas) it was weird. i had to had to eat spaghetti that was like grilled cuz the stove wasn’t working
My grandpa grew up on a mountain home in the mountain, so he was used to it. He moved to Texas, and then that happened he was like, " pfff yal are overreacting
Imagine living in Venezuela in early 2019, 2 weeks without electricity, it was horrible
As a power grid in Lancaster and the Palm desert I can confirm that this is one of the EAS scenarios of all time
Lmao
Bro is a whole entire power grid 👨🦲

I love how this was actually an older computer virus. Combines scenarios and malware into a beautiful mixture.

*"The battlefield is your mind, they win when you lose it to the dark"*
Now _that's_ unsettling
Sounds like something from Psychonauts
That thing really made me think what’s out there, in the dark.
Replying so i can come back to this later. Good quote.
Stuxnet is a highly interesting virus, and I wish that more of the details of its extremely unique function were shown through the alerts. Stuxnet was an extremely "promiscuous" virus with an incredibly targeted payload that would only trigger in extremely specific circumstances- or, in short, it spread itself very aggressively in ways that were difficult to track and that could (in theory) cross "air gaps" (though it was reliant on user error, as most exploits against airgapped systems are). Only when the virus detected that it was running on a system connected to the exact type of computer used to monitor centrifuges would it feed erroneous "good" data on a loop while sending malicious instructions to the centrifuge that would damage it over time.
That said, I have no doubt that a worrying amount of our infrastructure could be kneecapped quite rapidly by something like Stuxnet, though it wouldn't work quite like this particular scenario makes it out to be. Generally speaking, something like a Stuxnet clone would only be deployable through a known exploit or security vulnerability and would be most effective if we assume that it targets multiple zero-day vulnerabilities. That essentially just means that it takes more time to secure vulnerable computers against the spread of the virus, and if the virus is well-known enough to have a name, that generally means that anti-malware has at the very least begun to catch up. From there, it's on the hackers to either release new variants of the worm that target entirely different vulnerabilities or leverage the information/control they have over infected systems to maintain their chokehold on the power grid.
As much as I make it sound like this isn't a realistic threat, or however much the above statements "defuse" the threat, it's actually much worse. Such a situation is definitely not impossible- the real cost would be in whatever damage a self-destructive control computer can do to substations and generators, and the time it takes for power companies to replace potentially huge swaths of equipment wholesale. Worse, if not done correctly, they could lose it all over again to one idiot with an infected flash drive. People wouldn't readily understand the nuance of how the virus works and it would likely take a "SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN NOW" announcement to get people to even truly consider taking the right actions. Swift, correct action could end something like this in a week, but a well-prepared team of hackers and the general incompetence of the average person makes it far more likely that something like this would potentially last months. Just think about all the PSN hacks a few years back.
Bravo sir, appreciated
@Ashwin Anand it was the comment of all time

Los Ángeles?
Pegasus?
Can’t help but think this was a teensy bit inspired by GTA V
Great work as always!
No, Pegasus is a real spyware, and Los Angeles is a real city.
@@blackenedistheend no way, i don't believe this
they stole Los Santos from GTAV and made it a real thing
@@UJustGotGamed I know, I was joking about the Los Angeles part
I feel like it is a tribute to atlas fallout foundation because the same person who made that also made a channel called Pegasus entertainment which think it is an arg

Your eas videos are already scaring me, so I don’t want to think what would I feel in real life…
they scare me too, and i also don't want to think what i would feel in real life...
@targetball134 i'm scared of dying
This stuff terrifies me and makes my heart beat super hard but I just can't stop watching, props to you for you incredible content
The scary thing is it's not a monster or anything like that it's something that could actually happen. Really makes me think how much humanity relies on electricity. "The civilisation lasts as long as the power is on""
*Newer to the channel, been binging the video catalog and loving what I’m seeing. However I can’t help but feel that in-universe some of these would make more sense as news broadcasts instead of eas, just a minor thing bugging me. Other than that small nitpick it’s nothing but quality from you.*
better watch the video the genesis on the channel then it'll make sence
Another channel to watch @SCP Realized
Wow, your channel has grown quite a bit! Keep the amazing work up!
Power failure 5000 wait patiently
Alert World back at it again, awesome work!
this is so cool! Realistic scenarios like this are by far my favorite videos of yours to watch. Almost makes me feel like cyberterrorists that use stuxnet controllers could hold an entire state hostage by maybe threatening full nuclear power plant meltdowns, like a worst case scenario of the Iran nuclear program being crippled by stuxnet. Anyways, keep up the awesome work!
I was slightly turned off when the government emergency alert started broadcasting what would appear to be classified info about stuxnet on a public broadcast because it felt unrealistic. It was only when the EAS voice started repeating itself that I realized what was going on. That immediately brought me back into the story. Great work on this!
what was going on?
was it the hackers making a fake eas to drive off attention to their virus away?
@@harryballshd exactly
Bro no those were for government employees only
those eas alert noises are scary as hell my god
Congratulations, you have the top search for “EAS” on RUclips! 👏🏼
HOW WAS I ASLEEP FOR THIS? AMAZING CONTENT MY GUY
This is just a daily and ever growing threat, not even fictional
Each year passes, the more likely this spooky thing would happen :(
wont be likely the power outage will be caused by a malware, maybe a solar flare like a giant solar flare
i live off grid so i will lol at the urbanoids

at this point, I watch your videos like I watch the news
glad youre back with another vid
I like these scenarios! The monochrome look is pretty cool and the animations look really nice! Keep it up! Those alarm sounds, though. It sounds like something out of my fucking nightmares.
Yay the first EAS alert to take place here in LA on this channel!
I'm totally not terrified 😀
I was waiting for your next upload! Always great to see your stuff. :)
Glad to have my home county, orange mentioned in one of your video
Facts: In Los Angelas, I think all of the types of cars will die because there is a battery that powers the radio.

I came to this video as I got the notification I hadn't watch the video while I'm doing this but I know it will be a good one like the rest of the videos from alert world^^ (edit: ya I was right very good video!!^^)
This is really scary because most power grids are connected so it will take down lots more people than just one place. Also that federal alarm and national alert sound are really good , they really sent chills down my spine.
Wasn't there a massive power outage in North Carolina recently? Crazy man. Its only a matter of time before this scenario happens for real, if it hasn't already.
Yeah, it was deliberate. Someone shot the power substations. Our infrastructure is alarmingly fragile.
it happened to my town recently for a few minutes and EVERYTHING was down, not even dunkin donuts was open :(
I swear this guy makes eas scenarios about anything
Love these videos I’ve been watching them since the scp ones for future videos please have a conclusion to the situations
Thats explained in the 100,k special. All these scenarios are made by aliens

This is a great video like always, but in case something like this ever happens, the systems can reset themselves and wipe their storage of any malware. Anyways, this was still very entertaining, and keep up the great work!
That's really not how it works
@@Japcsali it is? you can research it. Things similar to this have happened like this around the world in the past.

Hey can you make Lizard People EAS Alarm Part 2? Also if you can I would like to see the British EAS Alarm with really anything Pls. Keep Up the Good Work

I love this video.. i don't know which emergency alert to trust.
This scared me cause my Internet just went out lol
I find this as an inspiration to learn how to code and how to hack. Thank you for giving me ideas.
Funny how I watched this yesterday and then the cell service went out nationwide
Love the videos, would join the patrion If I wasn't poor af
Well... This had some interesting timing.
This is a reminder of a nightmare I had. I hope this doesn't happen for real, or I'm outta this world.
For your next eas you should do a scp 096 breach if you havent! I think itd be pretty scary, like how the face in the window made me scared of windows for a few days after watching it
Bro this is god foreshadowing the future.
can you do a one where demons invade earth kinda like DOOM
Idea: Tower of Babel type disaster (all languages mixed up)
That would be fascinating

Highly advise you prolong these emergency alerts. Instead of concluding one story in one video, make a part two or three (wouldn’t go past four). Keep the attention of your fans bro
Alert Senario i would love to see you make one where it says that the moon is killing people but can you make so its in the 1990's (idk it the 90's just scares me)
Also i know theres a small chance you will see this since your very huge on RUclips so yea.
Nice👍
Amazing
This video scared me because as a Floridian kid who is afraid of everything creepy we had a power surge like a week back when I first watched it
The siren for alert 2 got me like💃💃💃

You should do an EAS Scenario About SCP 001 "When Day Breaks"
2:15 Banger Alert
Make a Black Mesa Incedent EAS Scenario. That would be cool
make a half life 2 eas scenario, would be cool to see
What scared me it that I live in Bakersfield and every time I hear it's name on the internet randomly I get hella shocked
yayy another one
The funniest part is that Pegasus is a targeted spyware that can only be used on chosen targets not a large scale malware that can be used on the public and is not suited for anything close to large scale attacks
If you mean stuxnet then it's also not suited for large scale attacks as it is only designed to *slowly* break centrifuges
Now it just feels like a horror movie about 8200
How I see when the lights off:
the fact that there is somthing like this going on in virgina is kinda scary
The funny thing. The green writings and animations are made in PowerPoint.
Wait what
No what really scary is losing your Internet
This actually almost happened a few months ago but Instead of a Cyberattack It was more like a heaterattack it was SOOOOOO HOT! 😥
2:20 That's an epic beat
Hey so I think you might not know show (if it does become one)but can you make a eas about learning with Pibby
We're literally close to Lancaster because I live in Palmdale
Hey alert world can you please do some creepypasta EAS alerts, not saying this is bad or anything because it is far from that but I don’t feel like it is as scary as other alerts you have done it’s ok if you can’t do them but I feel like it would be so much scarier if it’s something out of control and spooky. Just my opinion bit keep up the great videos!
the thing is, if there was a blackout, you wouldnt be able to see or hear this stuff because there is no power
Goku grabbing a ball of pure energy the size of a star: you underestimate me
the scariest thing that pegasus is a real malware 💀
The scariest part is, mostly all electrical grids are connected ALL OVER THE US. if Los Angeles went out they will take THE WHOLE US. (Except Hawaii and Alaska and Puerto Rico, of course and texas)
Should work on self-reliance & a reality based & tangible back up
“Do not download files from unknown sources”
Me, trying to get office for my Windows XP VM:
Whenever I watch these videos I start myself because I’m not scared of anything but eas alarm creep me out
is alert world monetized again? i'm subscribed to them but barely go on youtube so it's nice to see them posting again
Idea for next eas alert bio geological event like a living tumour infection that is slowly removing and replacing land
this is a sad day for everyone
but the gamers will be the most sad
Hey uhm, can you try doing an EAS that takes place in Indonesia if you can? Thanks!
That reminds me of the cyberattack in Call of Duty Black Ops 2.
u should make one about one of the events of half life (Xen creatures or the 7 hour war)
Will there be a part 2? I want to see some of the "politically charged" broadcasts from the terrorists, not to justify them but rather to add to the story. Are they Anarchist, do they have a goal?
you should do one about SCP- 3640 :D
