It was 1976 and we were playing a jazz contest in Ames Iowa... We were the last performing high school band and played the Woody Herman version of Spain. The Woody Herman band set up after us and played Spain as their first number. First time I had heard Lyle Mays. If I remembered right Woody just hired the NTS One o clock rhythm section to play in the band. Thanks for the vid. I still remember Lyle Mays warming up on the acoustic Grand.. scale after scale..
Excellent arrangement. Think that's Joe Farrell on tenor...Lyle Mayes straight from North Texas, and love Dennis' fluegel sound and his solo is excellent.
The first time I heard this was in college, 1976. Frank and Jim both took rides. It was awesome. One of Woody's better bands especially with the trumpet section.
Ahhhhh....my era. I had just graduated from North Texas. Despite the dated hair, these were some serious dudes! Woody always kept up with the times and never forgot the blues!
My high school stage band played this chart in 77 . The Herman charts where everywhere and often played at stage band competitions. It all comes back now .
hmmm - seeing this for the first time .. 40 years ago. This was a work in progress when we played Ronnie's ... I added a sax solo, a trombone soli and a drum solo by the time the chart was finished for the King Cobra album. Interesting hair styles if nothing else.
Hej Gary yes it was a fantastic band I picked up at Ronnie Scott and brought to Europe Poland Sweden Finland. Remember this tour with very warm feelings. Hope you are ok where ever you are. Love from Bo Johnson
...you are correct with.... Lyle left NTS in 1975. This group toured Europe in the Winter-Spring of 1976. I have a great double LP limited release by Polljazz i.e.The Polish Jazz Society of a concert in Poland on 2/25/76. Lyle was listed on the LP as Lyle-David Mays.
1976/Ronnie-Scotts: (L-R) SAXES: Gary Anderson, Frank Tiberi, Sal Spicola, John Oslawski - - TPTS: Bill Byrne, Nelson Hatt, Jeff Davis, John Hoffman, Dennis Dotson - - BONES: Dale Kirkland, Jim Pugh, Vaughn Wiester - - P: Lyle Mays, B: Wilburn ("Kerby"?) Stewart, D: Steve Houghton => Blue Flame, Spain, Greasy Sack Blues, Four Brothers, Never Let Me Go, Woodchopper's Ball, La Fiesta
The days of touring big bands are over. One thing they did was bring a certain segment of fans into clubs to hear jazz, who might not have otherwise been there. It was a familiar format to many who wouldn’t have gone to hear a trio or other small groups.
Lyle Mays played with Woody. Who knew? Two of my absolute favorites and they worked together. Well Woody was known for gettin those young turks right out of school. Back then if you didn't do rock you could do jazzrock. If you were really good Stan or Woody was the place to be.
Here is a partial list of personnel: Lyle Mays, electric piano Jeff Hamilton, drums? Jim Pugh, trombone Greg Herbert, Frank Tiberi, Gary Anderson on tenor saxophones and flutes. Tiberi also plays bassoon on this track. Bill Byrne, Dennis Dotson on trumpets. I think the flugelhorn soloist is Dotson.

Lyle was only 23 ! Amazing playing already !
Excellent arrangement. Think that's Joe Farrell on tenor...Lyle Mayes straight from North Texas, and love Dennis' fluegel sound and his solo is excellent.
Rest in peace Lyle Mays.

This dates
from Feb 1976. And was recorded by the BBC for an Omnibus programme on Woody, Peter Robinson
I love the sound of a Fender Rhodes. Lyle Mays can play. The mid to late 70's were a special time if you were into big band jazz.
Saw this band 1977 Portsmouth Guildhall
Correction (to my post): Lyle toured with Woody for 8 months 1975/76.
RIP Sal Spicola.

We lost Sal Spicola this week - may his beautiful soul rest in peace.
Yup -- just was on a Zoom memorial hang for him-----
The old cat grooving out in the audience at about 1.25 is something else.
On spain a brilliant solo of Lyle Mays
Here is a partial list of personnel:
Lyle Mays, electric piano
Jeff Hamilton, drums?
Jim Pugh, trombone
Greg Herbert, Frank Tiberi, Gary Anderson on tenor saxophones and flutes. Tiberi also plays bassoon on this track.
Bill Byrne, Dennis Dotson on trumpets. I think the flugelhorn soloist is Dotson.
I think that's Steve Houghton on drums,I know they both came from the 1 O Clock lab to Woody's.
The intro is from Crystal Silence from the Return to Forever album
That is later than 1972. Maybe even 76 or 77.
Wow! Lyle Mays?
Kerby Stewart is on bass...
Sal Spicola on Tenor & Flute - NOT Greg Herbert . John Oslowski (also known as John Laws) on Baritone.
Probably 1975.
yep. thats houghton
'75 or '76 after Lyle graduated from North Texas State (i.e. famous Lab '75 album)
Jeff Davis-lead trumpet-this would be '75-'76-right b-4 Vizzutti joined
@bopsax: it was definitely earlier than 1974. Lyle Mays (@2:42 - ) was playing with Pat Metheny by then and not with Woody Herman.
Lyle recorded with the 1975 NTSU One O'Clock Lab Band (ruclips.net/video/mwitYSRMa_Q/видео.html) and first album with PMG was 1978.
