Iceberg as Big as London Breaks Off Ice Shelf in Antarctica

- A massive iceberg has broken away in Antarctica. Glaciologists with the British Antarctic Survey say it measures about 600 square miles, the size of Greater London. It broke off from the Brunt Ice Shelf and researchers say they shot this video in 2019, having noticed a crack forming for a few years at that point. They called it Chasm 1 and continued to monitor it, expecting a breakaway event in the future. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.
This always blows my mind. Like I don’t think we can fathom how big this would be to actually look at. Even with the London comparison it’s hard to physically imagine actually seeing it
It would be like looking into the grand canyon except frozen 🥶
Have you ever flown across the United States it’s no different just ice instead of rock
An area that can easily fit 10 million people with plenty of space in between.
Ya my first thought is to put a some snow in there n weld it up wt snow but... that crack is big realistically thst there's nothing we can do about it
The word fathom I've been seeing everywhere recently!!!

This is just like that episode of Salvage One where a giant ice flow broke off and started floating around the ocean
Even if that iceberg is small in comparison to the Earth’s size, a chunk of ice breaking off Antarctica in its shear size alone is not a good sign as Antarctica basically acts as Earth’s cooling system that is why it is so heavily guarded and studied.
not a good sign? This stuff is happening all the time. Maybe not to this scale specifically, but this is just normal Antarctica stuff.
I wonder if this is what’s causing “mars like weather” in Canada. Supposedly, it will get down to -60 in some parts.
@@crimsonneko Exactly. 💯 It’s just that now we can detect it and make shock news from it. 📰
Everything happens for a reason
@Miguel Pinto sheets of ice breaking apart in Antarctica? Yes, that very much does happen all the time.
The fact they said there's nothing to be concerned about, is very concerning. 😬
“Don’t look up”
This is the kind of stuff I wish we caught on camera. It must’ve been insane seeing it break.
This is the intro in every Apocalypse movies
I wonder what sound it made when it broke off, was it loud?
No dead silent like a million birds sleeping :/
Probably. Like you can search “ice calving” here and see some examples. Sounds pretty loud
If nobody was around to hear it there’s co conscious perception of sound.

What they’re not telling us though…
The Antarctic Ice Sheet has been growing by record amounts since 2013 which is the real reason we’re seeing bigger and bigger chunks break off into the sea.
Says literally no one.

That damm squirrel
Was it already in the water? If so, it's not going to raise water levels. Put ice in a cup and fill with water. When it melts, the water level doesn't overflow. Science!
I sure hope all that water doesn’t flood the coast line in Florida. How long can it stay frozen right?

That darn squirrel
I’m not entirely convinced that this won’t effect sea levels…. I see this and think of the movie “The Day After Tomorrow”😬😬
But the ice is already in the water it’s not gonna make the sea level rise.
Fill a bowl half full and put a big chunk of ice in it when it melts it won’t overflow. Mark the level after you put the ice in and See where that level is when the ice melts
Same
@@Oksure420 but there's a lot of ice behind it parked on land that will raise sea level if it melts and drains into the ocean
@brmadden not true. It will not melt fast enough for that to happen. What about all the snowfall and rainfall we have around the world throughout the year and every year that does not raise the level neither will a little bit of ice melting and remember the earth was once covered with ice it’s been melting for many decades
That's why they said don't worry at the end. Too many things to worry about.

It’s like from the movie the day after tomorrow where a large ice berg cracks but this one is real i’m kind of interested to see what would happen over the next coming years I think it will drift away through the ocean
Yeah except the ocean levels aren't going to rise, we aren't going to have any tsunamis, and nobody's going to die. But other than that you're right it's like that movie.
How come you didn't report on the collapse of the ice shelves in front of Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers later in January? That was due to Deep Ocean Heat.
