Pūkana Pūkana or facial expressions are an important facet of Māori performance. They help emphasise a point in a song or haka, and demonstrate the performer’s ferocity or passion. For women, pūkana involves opening the eyes wide and jutting out their tattood chin. For men, it means widening the eyes and stretching out their tongue or baring their teeth. Though these expressions may be intimidating, they are not necessarily a sign of aggression, but may simply show strong and deep-felt emotions.
I tell you what, you forget that their kids when you watch this. As a Brit i gotta say i really envy the tribal cultures of today. They managed to keep their identity and history intact. Sadly i come from a country that has forgotten its warrior cultures, the Celts, Saxon and Viking. Our history is no longer popular and means nothing to our young. I love videos like these, they show me yhat atleast some people have respect for the past.
I agree 100% - as a descendant of a Scots immigrant to the US I have tried to instill in my sons some sense of their ancestry but to little avail. I find the hakka stirring - if I had such ancestry I would be proud of it as are these kids - they did a tremendous job - a very long program - but very well done.

This haka is one of my favourites. A lot of emotion and heart. You can just feel their ancestors through them. That's what brings the mana out of me. Mean Maori mean
Found this Yesterday and I've watched it maybe 10 times. Best performance I've ever seen. Their energy and Harmony are Amazing! I didn't notice the Lead Girl before but I heard her. Imagine having to sing loud enough over the group singing and louder than the crowd applauding to be heard. SHE REALLY STOOD OUT! She did a Fantastic job. Hope you post more from the same group. Thank you.
I am from the U.S. and have been in love with the Māori people and their traditions for at least 10 years or more. I have watched as many videos as I can get my hands on, especially the competitions between the groups and the hakas and varied songs. I must admit that this group is one of the very best I have ever seen, especially the haka. Their rhythm, pronunciation, cadence, facial expressions, vocals and much more have been stellar and I am including adult groups in this. They are perfection!!! I hope you all continue…..it would be a shame for your groups to lose you. Thank you for your wonderful performance! Their parents must be so very proud.
Although I didn't understand the language, the performance was outstanding. I wish other cultures would be as proud of their heritage as these young people.
Bans on First peoples knowing and learning their heritage are still legally in place in many areas. The Maori people have the BEST in this as they are (I believe) the only nation that teaches ALL the children (regardless of background) the Maori language and culture. As Duane pointed out, most First peoples have knowledge of their heritage, but the public is not as aware because the Indian Act (in Canada) and other such documents that restricted their movements and divided them into widely disparate reserves hid the richness of the culture. Things like Pow Wow and other communal activities like these competitions, and even speaking in their own nations' languages, were often illegal and only found life in underground movements. Today, many communities are loosing their culture because of government and religious oppression for generations. Some are regaining it, some are maintaining it, very few are as thriving as thhe Maori culture is. I've met performers who've come for competitions and cultural exchanges before (such as Cultural displays organized around the Olympics) and the Maori have always attracted me the most because of the great spirit that literally exudes from them. Kia Ora and well done to this young group from a Canadian.
Damn these tamariki were amazing, I was never at this level when I did Kapa haka at their age. So happy that our performances are improving as the years go by. But this really brings back some good memories growing up back home and makes me miss it a lot being here and watching from Australia now
Hello! I Just discovered this amazing performance ! Îm french and i am à dancer and wooow! I am impressed ! Do you know where i could find the lyrics of all these songs and incantations ? And translation ? Thank you very much !
It’s amazing how the songs/ melody that start at 11:30 and 13:57 gets into you head. I am out on the golf course and my golfing buddies are asking me what you are humming/whistling.
It's almost christmas eve. Although I am spending it alone, I feel stronger and motivated because I have listened to this. I've been listening to different haka recently. I don't know the reason why and I don't understand the words, but it brings out the fire in my heart and it gets deep down to my soul every time. I feel like I belong. Much love and respect from the Philippines. ^_^
Hello from the USA, Panther, and Merry Christmas! I too am alone today, but will see my family soon, hope you will too. I love the haka so much it almost feels as though I must have a Maori ancestor in there somewhere, LOVE the pride of the Maori people in their culture. My emotions go crazy every time I see haka, and this one is THRILLING! Love to see the youth coming up knowing who they are and reveling in it.
@and I want to bring out that same spirit in our youth here. Not exactly doing the same thing as haka but any activities that creates a great bond to preserve our close-ties culture. I hope you'll have great time with your family during the holidays. Please send love to your family from the Philippines. Cheers!

Thank you, and I love what you said about bringing the youth together there in their own celebration of heritage--I believe every child in the world needs such enriching immersion in the best of their people's traditions, sharing all these things with their families and communities. I think we make a huge mistake when we try to leave all that behind. Happy New Year!
That was amazing! What an incredible job they did 👏 I live in the midwest of the US and I've been to quite a few Native festivities. While they can be almost magical they are not powerful like this nor do the children participate at this level. Just incredible.
This is most probably a Kura Kaupapa that's why. It won't be a mainstream school. I garuntee u all of these kids can speak fluent Māori. If it IS a mainstream school (almost 99% sure it won't be), that would be ridiculous
Respect for a proud warrior heritage, long may it continue...you can see the emotion from the kids performing. I hope the Maori culture continues to be passed on and the young ones take it on. Very moving, respect.
I never stop crying when i watch maori culture dance and expressions. You can really feel their ancestors energy flowing through them. How the women are so strong but still looking beautiful. Such a contrast of what a women is today. Also love they tell a story in their dance, you can tell they trying to save and protect their land. Their pain, sadness and strength is shown in every single song and move
I don't understand a word of the singing but that detracts not a whit from the ability of these youngsters to lift my heart with the melody, rhythm and sheer exuberance of their performance. Thanks for brightening up a miserable, cold, wet and windy day.

What a small world, the dress, the mosaic patterns so similar to my cultire as well, from Sabah the Kadazan Dusun culture. We have tattoos as well but on the shoulders and the headband is made out of small beads. What a world we live in. The saddest thing is our language almost gone because our cultural event mainly focuses on tourism culture and also choosing the most beautiful girl in the village
The Māori language was nearing extinction also, the first Māori to be educated were punished if they spoke their own language. But fortunately a bunch of elder women gathered and went around the neighbourhood picking up all the young to take home and teach Māori too, which kept our language alive they were so successful they expanded to what is known today as kohanga reo "Māori early child care" and we havent looked back we now have middle and high school teaching Te Reo Māori (Māori language). Te reo Māori was taught in primary school to all races and kapa haka groups were in every school which helped it thrive also.
Which white man from which country? Greece, Russia, Poland, England Scotland, Wales, Germany, all have a longer history than the Maori (from NZ) and many of the old songs and dances have been kept. Difference is, it's not politically correct to remember your heritage unless African or Polynesian. And yes, we all learned the different songs, dances and singing games at primary and jntermediate schools.
I understand all the songs are originals, anywhere I can get a recording of them? Been studying dance for over 10 years, hula, Tahitian, and Malori, must say, wonderful job! I can dance, do long poi, and short poi, but no way can sing at the same time! Amazing!
