      My guesses are
      1st It didn't sell well.
      2nd A no-memory poly with slider-per-function is perceived by most as just too limiting. This perception is complicated by the size/portability factor bringing a 'beginner'/for-kids vibe even though it can sound close to an AN1-X in many bread&butter patches and can do a more sounds than a Juno 6/60/106...but alas, it cannot recall any of it.
      Personally I find that this aspect can be _liberating_ depending how it's deployed. Which is why I have a Juno-6, CS-60 and am considering this, too.
      .... but I am in a minority of a minority _Look ma, no wonky preset patch-jumps mid-jam!_

      That is the correct assumption. I aim to put that right next year..I've been sitting on one of these for a few years..and have mastered it. I make complete tracks with mine including drums designed on the reface.
      It's VERY POWERFUL once you understand it properly. It's more than a pad machine. It can do juicy synth bass and wonderful analogue drums.
      It's as powerful as a Roland Juno 106. Which is what it really sounds the most like. And I'm not kidding. I owned a Roland Juno 106. And this is like its little brother. I will show its FULL potential next year linked up to a Korg microsampler to compose my tracks.

    If all my synths were stolen the CS is the first I'd replace. Sounds believably analogue for a digital synth (unlike my Boutique JP-08). User interface is wonderfully designed - so quick to dial-in sounds. My go-to especially for scratch parts to be replaced by synths that are slower to program - with the CS the muse never gets bored and wanders off because I'm taking too long to find a sound.

    If one has tastes in music or sound sensibilities this synth is fantastic. But if one doesnt have patience it could sound bland as well. I personally love it. I also own a CP which is beautiful in its own right. I wish it had a switch to make it velocity sensitive. Debating whether I need a DX, I’ll probably get one. I use to own a SY-77, that is an amazing FM synth to play with

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 3 года назад

      I just bought a CS for the second time (I’ll never sell it again), and the CP and YC are high on my list. The DX doesn’t interest me as much bc I have too many other synths and VSTs that can do FM very well. But nothing seems to sound as good as the CP does in the VST/Plug-in realm. And hardware wise you have to spend $1000+ to get e. piano sounds that good.

      The annoying thing is that the keys are velocity sensitive, but the synth doesn't do anything with that information. Really wish they had've had a velocity sensitivity slider next to the portamento one. I can see why you might want zero velocity sensitivity, but it definitely should be an option, not the fixed behaviour.

    It's the first synth I've bought in 24 years. And the first to pull me away from my DX7 in 24 years. And that means it's SPECIAL.

    First off, these sounds and this vid are incredible. I bought this for 300 bucks online and I'm really happy with it. I've got it hooked up to an iOS midi LFO app for more modulation options. I'm curious if you've played an AN1x and if so, does the Reface CS have any tricks up its sleeve that make it worth holding onto if I decide to buy an AN1x? Like is there anything this can do that the AN1x can't? I'm just so blown away by the sound that now I'm really lusting after its origins.

    • @tblv9300
      @tblv9300  7 лет назад +2

      yes I think the an1x is one of the best sounding VAs out there. There's no comparing the two when it comes to depth of editing possibilities, the an1x wins in that regard. I think it's great as a master keyboard as far as the feel of the keys and wheels. The ribbon strip can sometimes go bad on those so watch out for that when you pick one up. My only minor thing with the an1x is that editing can be a little tedious. I've heard the reface engine was based on the an1x but i never A/B'd the two to see. The thing I like about the reface (besides the sound) is the fast editing and the wide variety of sounds you can get at without any menu diving. It's so easy to change the sound from one to another quickly that it prevents you from losing inspiration.
      one thing I wouldn't recommend is the an200 groovebox, some people say it's the same as an an1x but i don't agree, and the encoders go bad on those pretty quickly.

      Thanks for the response! I'm in the market for a master keyboard to replace my crap Casio I bought in the 90's. Kinda had my heart set on something else, but now I will have to reconsider.

      The AN1x can't do drum sounds or better bass than the CS REFACE.. This little synth is amazing. You can recreate that old synth pop sound from the kick drum up with ease.

    • @fender1000100
      @fender1000100 7 лет назад +3

      You could still get the AN1X or JP8000 they are both great pad machines.
      Me I use the DX7 as my master board. As its keyboard action is one of the greatest in history. The CS REFACE sits on top of it. And is used more like a sound module.
      I will be uploading several demos this year. To show the wonderful sounds I've pulled out of the CS in the last year.
      I really believe f Yamaha had brought this out as a full sized 37 key board with onboard user memories. It would already be considered a classic. Because a lot of people passed the CS over because to them it looked like a toy.
      But sonically this thing sounds like a legend. It really does.

    Well of course it does. I've heard people make a JUPITER 8 or CS80 sound awful. Someone with great skill can make a simple synth sound amazing with skilful production and playing skill/ideas. There's a guy on here called peahix. And you should hear what he can do with an old Yamaha CSO1 II. He did a version of Depeche Modes NEW LIFE. And most including me agree it sounds better than the original.

    Being able to save presets or not isn't exactly a deal breaker for me - I like what I'm hearing - really nice patches - it's a bit quirky too, particularly with respect to its fm/audio rate modulation capabilities, etc. I think it would sit well along side my korg arp odyssey. You have to have a smart phone to save presets though? You can't just do it on your computer? I know I'm like the last of a dying bread who doesn't have a smart phone. Sort of a luxury not having one though.

    • @tblv9300
      @tblv9300  8 лет назад +2

      There are two ways to store/load presets. You can use the capture app on a mobile device and save/load the presets as QR codes (this is what I do) or you can go to the yamaha soundmondo website. I believe you can load and save through this website using the USB connection. The reason I don't use soundmondo is because you have to be using the chrome browser to access that site and for a variety of security reasons I don't ever use chrome. I also don't like the idea of being tethered to a website to change a preset.

    • @X77-g2j
      @X77-g2j 8 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply. I didn't know that about chrome - I'd probably avoid using it too if that's the case. I'm sort of tempted by I pads so I might go that route at some point - there are some seemingly very nice synth apps out there - the moog model 15 app is apparently great. I had a system 1 for a while - really not bad sounding in its own and it has a pretty interesting set of features - it always tended to sound significantly more modern and glossy or extreme or something - basically not a good compliment to the arp's much more natural kind of sound. The cs does sound a bit more old school or gritty or something. They can be had for like 300 or so used at the moment so too - tempting.

    • @X77-g2j
      @X77-g2j 8 лет назад +4

      Picked up the CS today and I love it! It's pretty fast to program - not really dying to save presets quite yet. It sits well with the arp and is basically better sounding or maybe just more up my alley than the system 1 it replaced. They really nailed the modeling on this thing - sounds massive - it'd be nice to see yamaha do a more fleshed out v.a. synth in this style - full keys, more controls - like if they made something that was just that much closer to a cs80 I think I'd just about die for it. Today is a day of great sounds - got to screw around with a Jupiter 6 at my local music store today too - wasn't expecting to see one of those - the thing howls.

      Wow, KARP Odyssey is my next buy as a first true analogue synth. I just got this reface CS as an impulse buy, but I'm loving it instantly more than the microKORG it's replacing. Would be nice to know how Odyssey and reface CS combined sounds, CS-sounds through Odysseys filters is probably nice :)

    • @X77-g2j
      @X77-g2j 7 лет назад +2

      The Odyssey is truly awesome. It's my all time favorite of the synths I've owned. I have a small eurorack system and recently picked up a prophet 6 and I still find myself playing/programming the odyssey more than the others - perhaps because it's simpler and more immediate - it's a very cleverly designed and cohesive instrument - not to mention it's the fundamentally sweetest sounding synth I've heard. Running anything into it's filters sounds great, though I never tried that with the cs - I sort of got obsessed with wanting a fully analog poly (what can I say, I'm obsessed with tone) so my cs was a casualty of a pretty substantial gear purge to buy the prophet 6. CS is great among va synths though - smokes a microkorg.

    Right, you cannot please everyone. But I've had several synths in my time and there is something very special about the sonic capability of this synth. It has the sweetest filter I've heard since the JUNO 60. Listen to that patches at 2.14---2.36--3.00--3.26--4.00--5.05--5.56 Absolute magic. They're as good as anything that's ever come out of any analogue synth in history. And the guys not even using EQ or outboard effects. Anyone who knows me knows I am a DX7 fanatic, just check my channel. And no other synth has had a look in since 1992. UNTIL 3 months ago when I tried this out. Sure it would be nice to have a full size board and 32 patch memories.
    Shallow people who dote over cosmetics and features will never realize just how good this synth can sound. Not to mention the drum kits it can make. I will be uploading complete demos from mid April once I get a multitrack recorder. To show why this synth has grabbed my attention.
