  • The Tower of Hook rises from the tip of Hook peninsula, where its cylindrical mass seems as grounded as the coastline itself. At night, its sweeping beam pulses like the heartbeat of the Hook area.
In the sixth century, St Dubhán, drawn by the prospect of solitude, made a pilgrimage to the Hook, where he founded a monastery. Local legend tells how his followers, horrified by the recurring sight of drowning sailors, lit the first beacon. Early in the thirteenth century, William Marshal - a key political figure of the day - had the tower constructed on the same site to act as a navigation aid for ships carrying precious cargo to and from his fledgling port of New Ross.
For almost eight hundred years the lighthouse has been a constant presence in the Hook. It has been consistent but it has also changed, from fire to electricity, from manned operation to automation, from the silence of the monks to the bustling energy of a tourist destination at the height of summer.
Join Dr Billy Colfer (author of The Hook Peninsula) on a guided tour through key moments in the evolution of the tower. Extensive interviews, dramatisations and rare archival material enhance the telling of the story of this iconic structure.

NOT THE OLDEST, the oldest operational lighthouse is Torre de Hercules in Spain, almost 2000 years old (Unesco World Heritage)
