  • In this episode we exam a IC-7000 with an odd receiver problem. Additional to that rig can't be controlled by PC via remote.
    As maintainers we have to swap the back up batteries.

    Hi Peter...very interesting repair. Regarding the chip inductor being burnt out, I had a similar problem with an Elecraft K2, it appears that at some point the ground connection to the rig PSU had become disconnected so that when the rig was switched on the rig tried to draw current via the computer ground connection, thus burning out the chip inductor. Unfortunately the user just tightened the PSU ground connection not realising the damage that had been caused. Something to watch for on any rig/computer combo. Hope this helps. Steve G4EDG

    I worked for Icom for about 7 years and in the era of the IC-7000 and IC-7100. The 7000 was a very problematic on all levels. The 7100 had many problems as well. Every new Icom design rig or radio always has multiple common and not so common issues. I would never buy an Icom rig or radio until at least 1 or 2 years past it's first release to iron out some of the problems.

      Shane, have you ever seen an IC7000 with good power on all band but lack of power on UHF ? I replace the final (RD60HUF1) and power increase from 12 to 23W watt but still no full output. When I dail the band while transmitting into a dummyload I get max 28W at 421MHz.. A very strange problem it seems.. shortwave + 50MHz is 100W, VHF 50W so driver seems to be okay.. Any Idea ?

    These Flat Foil Cables (FFC) are a very difficult thing to handle in maintenance. The video clearly shows, that someone already pulled them out and in several times. The contact area of several lines where broken or folded. One needs to remember that these foils and the corresponding plugs are only made for 12..20 contact times.
    From what I can see in the video, ICOM does use static connectors, that do not have a handle to release the FFC. So the risk of damaging the foils contacts is 100 times higher than compared to these ZIF connectors. You have to take care to push in the cables exactly straight downwards. Only a small angle deviation from 90° and the connectors contact pins will peel off the foils contacts.
    You can make yourself a special tool, by using angle pliers where you glue some small ribbon tape on the inside. With that you can easily push in and pull out these cables, maintaining equal force on a wide area of the foil.

      @hamandwine 7 лет назад

      Hi Tony! I only added a hopefully helpful advise for the public. And if the public has an additional advice, it it very welcomed! I am not sure if it is always a good idea to use the FFC sockets with the release handle, cause ICOM designs for mobile, airborne and military use. And under vibration it is a totally different thing to use a plug that is either self opening or extremely more expensive compared to a simple but uncomfortable solution.

    I do like the look of the IC-7000, and would like to own one. Are they a good radio if treated with respect and not run at full power all the time? Or is the Icom IC-7000 a radio that's best avoided?

    The ribbon cable appeared to have been subjected to some thermal stress. Did you test the unit for a long time with the case enclosure completed? Perhaps there is a fan issue or, as you showed, a loss of thermal transfer between components in the final and the case that raised heat inside. Although regarding grease I would offer that heat transfer is not terribly bothered with the lack of grease; it is used to "fill in" any mechanical gap between the component and heat sink.
    I'd be a little more curious about those cables and what may have caused them to fail.
    Maybe, as you guessed, a previous repair (flux left behind) may have damaged the cables?

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  8 лет назад

      +k1mgy Hi Mark, well a lot of possible root cases which I'm not rally able to verify. But it is a kind of fact that this radio is running very hot itself . The fan is working for sure and yes may be it is possibly a result of an earlier repair? I know that the grease is only a gab filler but you always have a kind of mechanical gab therefore it is essential to have grease in place. Thanks for comment! 73's

    I am familiar with that feeling of surprise when finding a component without thermal grease.
    I try to give the manufacturer the benefit of the doubt and blame it on the golden screwdriver, but when you start seeing repeat offenders, you start to question the factory’s quality control.

    Hi All to Anyone interested, as seen below i have an IC 7000 that is about 3 Khz off freq on 70cms and about 1 khz off on 2 mts, on tx and rx, hf isn't far out, but apparently there is only the one thing to set, there is no adjustment inside the radio, and the REF in the OTH menu only goes a few hz either way, but if you go into the hidden menu, see Bib Nagy video on that, using a a jack plug in the back you are supposed to be able to move it about 5 khz shall we say, at least, the numbers are in Hexadecimal, mine is on AD, now i tried to change it, i went form 00 to FF that's the whole range, and it dint alter it at all, i was supposed to, so i am now sending it to Icoms in Kent,,,,just thought someone might be interested hi...seems the radio must have a fault on....from Fred g4vvq in England.

      Yes Peter, forget Marx; the Teutons are good at convincing themselves of their superiority.
      If they'd get off their soap boxes they'd see the hubris they're heir to. We all make mistakes but those fellows far too often won't accept this. This is a problem. They inadequately design many things and the thoroughness you mention isn't there, yet you can't get through to them. Uttery impeacheable they are. It's cultural. They look as silly to the rest of the world as americans (small A).

      Kenwood has very nice audio. I started with a Yeasu FT857D mobile "shack in a box", which according to my Bird meter puts out between 98 and 102 watts HF, but the audio leaves a lot to be desired. I bought a couple of older 1990s, late 1980s Kenwoods. One had a bad mic preamp, and the other had bad caps in the audio output, which fried a chip, but after repairs, they are both keepers, especially the one with the built in antenna tuner. The Kenwood transceivers all sound very nice even without external speakers..

    What a fucking mess of the chip coil, totally savaged up the 3.5mm jacks. An absolute horrendous job a 5-year-old could do better with today's equipment. I've replaced chips smaller than that and the finished job was perfect with NO surrounding damage. If I was the owner of this radio id be pissed and would have told him to replace those too. Also said he couldn't guarantee how long it will last.....if the job was done properly it would have lasted. Total NOOB.
