Sonny & Cher not knowing the lyrics was part of the charm and the thrill, like they really hadn't planned to sing together. Better they be looking at each other than at cue cards!
I was in the audience for the Sonny and Cher taping --- drove 10 hours from Canada and was at the front of the standby line at 3:30 a.m. on show day. So memorable!
The Sonny and Cher moment is quite simply one of the most magical moments on TV. Even back then when you were watching it you knew you were seeing something amazingly special. I could watch a whole one of these on that show alone.
I remember Mary throwing those footballs. What a great trip down memory lane this is! Still the greatest late night show of all-time. Punk rock and weird and experimental and, as Eddie Murphy said, the coolest thing on TV.
Saw a lot of these clips, including this one when it aired. (There were also a bunch I was surprised I missed, probably because I didn't have a TV in my college dorm room back then.) I recall the atmosphere for this one was electric.
@@DanielleCyr1 I love when David jokes that Sonny and Cher did it "for scale", and Cher says that it's better this way. It wasn't a fake reunion for money, it was truly special.
@@DanielleCyr1 One thing that was great was that you didn't know if Cher would do it. There was nothing phony about it -- she was trying not to! But Dave wouldn't let her get away.
While i love all of these, this one was especially wonderful. And I'm getting teary over that healthcare detail. So many terrific people on that staff!! Thank you, Mary!!
For me, it is of her and Dave throwing a baseball around the office and giving their throws a little “mustard” leading to a window breaking and glass potentially falling several floors to the street below.
I remember watching the Sonny and Cher bit as a teenager. I laughed at how badly they did it and couldn't understand why it was a big deal. Also remember Mary against the quarterback. Mary was awesome!
This may have been the best one yet. She was always great when she was on, and by the way, slower is ALWAYS funnier. Think how much longer the show could have run if he would have realized that.
Like Johnny Carson, Dave could have run as long as he wanted to. And the fact that Mary was/is a doll figures into the equation. May God strike you dead if I am wrong ;o)
Richard Harris, wow! He captivated me as Dumbledore and his passing after the first two films changed the film series forever. Lovely to see just how brilliant he was in the 1980s, I was too young to see this side of him and it's a revelation!
I always remember the Football segments, As soon as i saw Mary on here that was the first thing that came to mind. It is great to hear about Dave having the staff on the show so they could get health care.
As a child of the late '60s early '70s, I have to admit, the Sonny and Cher thing was one of my favorite David Letterman moments! That was such a "full circle moment" from the variety show that they had back in the day. It was kind of a closure as well on one of the bigger Hollywood divorces from that era.
I'm fairly certain this lady is the Mary I met at the Club Med in Martinique way back in the 90s. Didn't ask her what she did for a living so I was quite surprised when I later seen her on Letterman doing a staff vacation segment with Dave. She showed a picture from her Martinique vacation as I recall it.
I love these old Letterman highlight reels, I was a young man in the 80s when I first started watching Dave and continued on into the 2000s. Fun fact, I live in Indianapolis and have been in my home for over 20 years which happens to be one block over from where Dave grew up in Indy, and I have the same street address as the house they've grew up in!
Hi Mary ! Hi Dave & everyone. Really enjoy these segments. I was in the neighborhood on 10 17 2001 yet have never seen the show from that date. Any chance at a clip or two from then ? Thanks 🙂
I was in the audience for the Sonny and Cher episode and my thinking at the time was “Cher REALLY does not want to sing this.” It was awkward for everyone.
Sonny and Cher forgetting the lyrics to "I Got You Babe' reminds me of the awkward time Dave asked a band to perform a hit song they were famous for but they clearly hadn't prepared. I don't want to say Van Halen or Aerosmith. That doesn't sound right. This is going to drive me nuts. Dave was so looking forward to them performing and all they did was riff when given a chance to perform at the end of the show.
Mary said she was throwing footballs and then choked in an embarrassing way, but I didn't see any kind of choke. She beat Phil Sims. All her shots were either in the basket or close to it.
It was a bit, and it lasted for ages. It even survived a writer’s strike. The last time Connie was on the show Dave commented, “That woman has been pregnant for about a year and a half.”
For reasons I won’t elaborate, I just want to declare to the universe that Mary Connelly is a saint.
Delightful Saint
So far my most favorite sequence of memorable staff moments
I’d never noticed just how much Richard’s son, Jared Harris, looks like his dad until seeing Richard here.
Was she Letterman's affair?
@@michaelkupfer3723 Doesn’t warrant a serious response for so many reasons.
The thing about the staff being onscreen in order to get health insurance is amazing.
Agree!
That's just one of the reasons why we love Dave.
This is the first time I’ve heard this. Makes me smile.
Thanks for the Kathy Lee story! I will have nightmares for a week!!🤢🤮🤑
"Way to go Dave"👏
“That could run you into some bucks” *Dave cackles in delight at his torture methods*

I hear there’s a full compilation of Mary’s football clips.
@@dongiller oh that's so good as Phil Simms' competitive nature kicks in. Great job with that and all the videos.
Sonny and Cher were so great! That should be on every Top Ten TV Moments list. Thanks for the laughs, Mary!
That moment is amazing, but also a perfect course in body language. How they start trying to keep some distance, and they slowly reconnect.
Agreed. I remember the night it aired. Amazing moment.

So good to see Mary Connelly again. I used to love the competition between her and Dave, throwing footballs. Great fun.
I loved the Sonny and Cher segment. I watched it (recorded it) right after broadcast.
I’m so glad they included the football game. Everytime I hear about Mary, that’s the first thing that comes to mind.

@@shawnuel Not to mention how hot she is.

I loved Letterman of this era! Nothing better.
The Milford Plaza hotel show is one of my favorites.

I love this series. I hope they never end.
Absolutely love these compilations! I hope they never stop.
The Sonny and Cher moment was a top ten moment in television history
Thank you Mary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll never forget the Sonny and Cher show. For me, that was the best Letterman show ever.

Mary seems most excellent! I fondly recall the football toss. She made us all picture a sweaty Kathy Lee. Well played, Susan Kennedy.
I’ve watched all these “staff” retrospectives. This one is peerless!
Those were the days Thanks Dave.✌✌
I wish I could give these staff favorites videos more than one thumbs up. They make my day every time.
This was pretty special. So many great memories and now some new ones

Love seeing clips from the old show

"Why would she answer the phone" the look on her face after she says that tells all. The face of a woman traumatized.

Sonny and Cher DID have cards, but apparently they weren't labeled who sings what (or Cher overlooked that if they were).
Mary/Connie replies (8:19), "Any time now, Dave."
I could get you your own show now, Mary. A gorgeous hot babe always works. Don't whip me.
Imagine if they had the football throwing contest today with either Zack Wilson or Daniel Jones. Mary would have won a $100,000 in one night.
