Television was still BIG. Dave was BIG Time Late Night on CBS, a network that preiviously had not succeeded in this time slot. It was a great time. I miss it.

In the mid-80s, when I was a Late Night-obsessed teenager, I visited New York on vacation and saw Gerard Mulligan crossing the street, carrying a briefcase. I excitedly told my parents, "That's Gerard Mulligan!", ran over, snapped his picture, and said, "Hi, Mr. Mulligan!" I was wearing a Late Night t-shirt. He gave me a tight-lipped smile, said, "Nice shirt, kid," and quickly walked away. I wish now I hadn't been so rude as to take his picture without permission, and just said hello first and asked. Mr. Mulligan, if you're reading this, I apologize. Still got the picture here somewhere, though. 🙂

Somewhere around 1990 I attended a LN show at NBC and ran into Gerry in the lobby. I gave him an old book, "The Story Of Meat", (I know, look it up). He wanted my address and a few weeks later I received a package with a nice note and shirt & hat from the show. A class act!
Me too. I was a fan of the daytime show. Then his late show debuted. I lived in Philly. I had heard that Dave justifiably ridiculed our local NBC affiliate as the lone major market network not to pick up his show. Instead, our local station maintained 1970’s detective show reruns (ie McCloud, Cannon, etc.) in that time slot. My freshman Penn State speech communications prof assigned us a “persuasive speaking” project on any topic we desired. I decided to try to persuade my classmates why NBC Philadelphia should join all other markets nationwide to pick up the new late night Letterman show. I think I earned an “A.”

I enjoyed the over-the-top ironic humor that permeated his shows!...You had to be at least sort of intelligent, in order to appreciate the concept...nowadays, this type of humor would not register with the current generation of idiotic Americans.
Gerard is a Living Legend. LOL. I really enjoyed his great work. He brought a cuttingly funny approach to Late Night Comedy and I tremndoulsy miss him for it. Thanks for shairng.

My favorite Mulligan bit, not shown here but sort of referenced with Henry getting fired piece, was when Letterman fired Gerard and told him to leave the studio. When Dave tried to retrieve Gerard, Dave saw a group of people watching TV who were watching Donahue. The show's subject, employees who were unfairly fired from their job, with Gerard Mulligan on it. Absolute genius TV, nothing on television today like it.

It's funny; I remember that segment when Levon Helm didn't show....and they STILL made a funny skit out of it. I also remember Leno's bit on fast food chain's names for menu items on the revered "Second Anniversary Show" or whatever it was.... I was 13 when Dave hit the 11:30pm slot- just old enough to be up that late....(1982, things were different then) for those that currently couldn't begin to guess where their 10 year old is a 3am....😆

At 12:00 Paul mentions Arnie Barns. I'd almost forgotten about him! The man worked for Omaha Steaks! Could we maybe get a compilation of some of Dave's phone friends? Like Arnie and Meg? Maybe see if we can find out what they're up to these days?
I had put together all of the Arnie Barnes calls a few years ago. It was subsequently blocked, but I planned to re-up it. Not to be. And, as pointed out, you can find all of Meg’s segments on some obscure and now- dormant YT channel. It’s in three parts. I contacted her after they were up, and she seemed pleased but mostly surprised that there’d be so much interest, Part 1 having generated over 1.5 million views.

It wasn't LATE NIGHT or LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN without the great GERARD MULLIGAN I've heard stories from other former staffers and I was wondering when I would hear from Gerard himself I think he was twice as funny as Dave and Paul hope you're enjoying your retirement Gerard and bless you and your family.
I remembered and watched the morning show. AND I remember the theme music! And the opening sequence. And the twice during the show news break with Edwin Newman. And I was watching the very first Late Night with David Letterman, too! THAT opening sequence and what a happy surprise it was to see Paul Schaffer when they panned the band. We all knew Paul from Saturday Night Live and the Blues Brothers. Later Hollywood composer Howard Shore was the musical director for the morning show. Howard and Paul, both from Canada. Nice place there Gerald, but I don't think that is actually his house. And I like New Jersey! Staff and animals? I don't think so, Gerry! And the old RCA cameras too! WOW!!

It's funny Gerard says he had no forewarning of the stunt Andy Kaufman was going to pull with the wrestler, because I just watched the Marc Maron podcast interview he did with Letterman, and Dave said Andy came over to him before the show, and explained exactly what he had planned.
Now we know where Will Smith and Chris Rock came from! Andy and Gerry Lawlor there! You know, those are the studios where Jimmy and Seth do their shows. 6A and 6B at Rockefeller Center. And Saturday Night Live as well on the 8th floor. Historic TV from a building complex that is EIGHTY years old! Amazing! And I think my Dad was there for a tour in the 1940s too. When it was the RCA building, the parent company of NBC.
When I was a kid it was a big deal to stay up past midnight watching Late Night and then they would do a bit where they go out the side door into the daylight and I'd realize they're probably sleeping right now.
I loved the "Gerry and Baby" segments from the mid-80s (collected into one vid by the great Don Giller: ruclips.net/video/HsDV9kbdDoM/видео.html). The one from February 17, 1986 was my fave, but all of them were hilarious. We love ya, Gerard! (You too, Chris.)

I can't even count how many times I've needed Lou Rawls and he wasn't around. Sage advice then and now.
Lou Rawls has some amazing songs. The songs he recorded for the Garfield specials are forgotten gems.
