    @JimmyBHarvests, Honey's main antifungal and antibacterial properties are due to the high concentration of sugar in honey. The concentration of sugar makes it just about impossible for bacteria and fungus to grow. Enzymes do play a role in this but they are usually dead after a month or so of storage.. maybe even sooner. So, when you dilute honey in water, you are effectively creating a haven for bacteria and other microorganisms. Honey dips for rooting should be a straight dip into no-diluted honey and into potting mixture, not water. FYI , I am a beekeeper, and storing honey is an important part of being a beekeeper.

    • @JimmyBHarvests
      @JimmyBHarvests  2 года назад +1

      Great info here, thanks for sharing it Joe! Looks to be exactly in line with what I found in my testing. Unfortunately, much of the internet recommends boiling the honey first - which clearly harms the plant's ability to propagate.

    • @cronix1314
      @cronix1314 Год назад +1

      Yes people don’t understand that if you delute honey in water it’s no longer considered antibacterial

    • @regularSenseAppeal
      @regularSenseAppeal 2 месяца назад +1

      This is 100% wrong. Carbohydrates like sugars are superfood for microorganism as is very clear in the heated honey samples that were overgrown with microbes. The reason raw honey didn't grow any microbes is due to the anti fungal and anti bacterial properties in raw unheated honey.

  • @raulduke1528
    @raulduke1528 4 года назад +4

    So...i believe since the tap water has chlorine and other antibacterial/antifungal components from the water plant, this may have givin the water more shelf life and a way to resist fungus and bacterial growth. This means that if you had covered the pasteurized bottles you may have gotten less fungal growth. Perhaps boiling the tap water weakened the chlorine presence. Just a thought.

      So some clippings, they seem to do really well regardless of the process, but for my blueberry clipplings and wild flowers i use the Miracle Grow fast rooting powder. I use sterile sheers to clip with, then wet my stem, then dip in the powder miracle grow fast root. Tap off any excess. Use a pencil to make a tiny hole/not to scrap off any of the powder on the stems, and put into either water or perlite. The blueberry clippings seem to do better in perlite. I use old clear vegetable bags you get from the grocery store that they have in the vegetable section to bag your veggies. they are fairly see through and light. I usually take 2 of the clippings sitting in jars/keg cups and put them in the bag. i loosely tie off the bags on top. It causes more of a greenhouse effect while keeping the moisture locked in. I only check on them once every 7-10 days to add more water...if perlite, i add just enough water so that i see about an inch of water sitting at the bottom. I also make sure at time of clippings at an angle to shave the side allowing more surface stem/roots to form more easily.

      ...i usually use both methods for propagating - water in jars and in perlite- i like to use both and double my chances of success, but i feel like the perlite method to be slightly more successful. Regardless, I always use the Fast root powder. For things like blueberry/wild flower clippings it takes a bit of time, but seems to help. As you already know, for most vegetables and things like green onions water seems to work just fine and for a lot of vegetable clippings they seem to be not too fussy

    ....also, not all clippings, but especially with tomato clippings, they tend to grow better, develope longer , bigger tomato plants by shaving the side of the root in water....the clipping will have more root developement soreading/appearing by having shaved one side of the tomato root clipping. I started a propagating experment 3 mo ths ago with blueberry clippings....but shaving the side had no effect/ better or worse with bluberry propagating

    Sorry if this question has been asked before but when you tried this method, how many hours of light did you give them? Also did you change the water at all? Or did you keep the same water until they were ready to be put in the soil?

      @JimmyBHarvests  3 года назад +1

      I topped up the water, but didn’t do full changes. Full water changes every couple days definitely won’t hurt though.
      As for lighting these plants had maybe 1-3 hours of direct light each day, and then 10-11 hours of indirect light throughout the rest of the day. Just keep an eye on the leaves of your plants- if they are drying out, give less light.

    You should make a video with unoxygenated, and oxygenated water. Oxygenate one with room air / aquarium pump and another with 100% O2.

      Aerated vs stagnant here:

      How would you get 100% O2?

      @@JimmyBHarvests you can buy O2 tanks and regulars from local welding shops

    It's good with the honey, I would change the water every 3 or 4 days but with the honey can leave it for 1 week.

    Boiled off chlorine in tap water removes the antiseptic quality. Then adding a carbohydrate such as honey will create a breeding ground for the airborne bacteria that ends up in the solution.

      Thanks for the explanation Chester! Lot of tutorials on the internet saying to boil the water, I’m glad we could prove them wrong

      I didn’t change the water. You can but it’s not required, as you can see from the plants rooting anyways

    When you boiled the water you removed the chlorine which let bacteria grow.

    • @JimmyBHarvests
      @JimmyBHarvests  3 года назад

      Chlorine would have evaporated from the non-boiled waters within about 24 hours.
