I really appreciate this album for what it is even if it's not a favourite for most people and even if I think there are better Green Day albums. Because American Idiot really takes a lot from this album (and Nimrod to an extent) and improves upon it. The acoustic guitars show up in American Idiot but AI has a lot more of that energy that you felt was missing here. The more political/societal commentary that American Idiot did started with this album in a much simpler form (i.e. the title track & Minority). The storytelling aspect of American Idiot sort of started with Misery. I think the "messiness" of this album can be attributed to this being a "mostly" self produced album. Their usual producer Rob Cavallo, who produced their albums from Dookie to American Idiot only had a partial credit for this album as "executive producer"
